About United Soccer Association (CUSA): Organized soccer in Calgary dates back to 1898 when the Calgary League held its inaugural season with 6 teams and 140 players. Many iterations and 82 years later, CUSA was founded as an amalgamation of Calgary Men’s Soccer League and Calgary United Soccer. Letter from the President

Dear members, stakeholders and fans of the beautiful game in Calgary,

It is my pleasure to present the 2016 Annual Report for Calgary United Soccer Association. Much was achieved during the course of the year and your association finished the year on a strong financial and strategic foundation. We believe that the year ahead presents many opportunities to further provide leadership on issues that matter to our members, and we look forward to the continued pursuit of excellence in this regard.

The association has experienced significant growth during the past couple of years, with the introduction of new programs and the expansion of existing ones. 311 registered teams participated in the 2015 outdoor season, the most in the association’s history, including the successful launch of the first 11-aside outdoor coed program. The winter of 2015/16 included the introduction of a futsal program, beginning with ten teams in a single division and strong growth prospects going into this winter. The 2016 outdoor season was highlighted by the successful introduction of a women’s program, which will also be introduced for the upcoming winter season.

The year was punctuated by the co-hosting of the 2015 Sport Chek National Club Championships and in October of 2015. CUSA received numerous accolades from teams and associations from around the country for the exceptional organization of the event and on our ability and willingness to be accommodating.

This year also represented the 25th anniversary of the Major Soccer League. For the first time in the club’s history, Calgary’s Villains Elite FC won the 2015 Championship. Since the AMSL’s founding, Alberta has captured more national championships than any other province, highlighting the success of the league in supporting player development in Alberta.

Competitions aside, the association continued to support the community through not-for-profit organizations, donating over $17,000 to KidSport and the Calgary Street Soccer Program over the course of the year.

Also of note, Calgary United Soccer Association was proud to win the Organizational Diversity Award as part of the 20th annual Immigrants of Distinction Awards ceremony hosted by Immigrant Services Calgary. The award has been presented since 1997 and honours the contributions and exceptional achievements of immigrants and refugees in the Calgary area. CUSA was recognized for fostering an environment of inclusiveness and diversity that benefits the many communities in the city.

The year ahead presents numerous opportunities and the association is well poised to take on the challenge. Of particular focus in the year ahead will be the continued expansion of the women’s program, the growth of futsal, expanding on early efforts to collectively promote improved transition between youth and adult programs, generating non-fee based revenue and engaging with our fellow soccer associations to capture the City’s attention with respect to facilities.

We continue to work hard for our members and look forward to sharing the successes of these upcoming efforts during the course of the next twelve months.

Sincerely,

Jasprit Lail Contents

-5- Noteworthy Achievements Organizational Diversity Award

Calgary United Soccer was proud to be presented with the Organizational Diversity Award for the 20th Annual Immigrants of Distinction Awards through Immigrant Services Calgary (ICS).

The awards banquet has been held since 1997 and honors the contributions and exceptional achievements of immigrants and refugees in the Calgary area. This year’s gala was held on March 16th. Calgary United Soccer President, Jasprit Lail, on behalf of Calgary United Soccer, was honored to accept the award for Organizational Diversity.

The roots of diversity within Calgary United Soccer extend far beyond our organization. Soccer is the most celebrated game in the world, and for generations Calgary’s economic success has attracted new families from all corners of the globe. We don’t need to promote diversity; we merely need to embrace it. A quick scan through the team names throughout our divisions exemplifies our success in having done so. We continue to actively embrace diversity through inclusive policies and practices that encourage participation in soccer for everyone in this city. These values are reflected in our mission and vision, and lead to a culture at Calgary United Soccer that was born out of diversity rather than one that adopted it as a critical value.

Lorayne saw Fair Play and sportsmanship as some of the key drivers to this league’s success. -15- Men’s Program

The Men’s Program offers competitive league play for players from 16 years of age and older. Teams move within the league through a promotion and relegation structure based upon final divisional standings. While the league has divisions with age restrictions, players are able to register to a division of choice providing they meet the minimum age restriction.

The league qualifies teams in the AMSL/Major, Premier to Division 3, Masters Elite and Masters Premier for post-season play in the ASA Provincial Championships. In the outdoor season the champions from the AMSL and Masters Elite earn the opportunity to participate in Canadian Soccer Championships.

Calgary United Soccer was the first league in Alberta to offer an Over 55 division. It started as a fall tournament, the Kaiser Cup, and has evolved into a division where the majority of each team are 55 years of age or older.

Men’s soccer in Calgary continues to show growth at both ends of the league’s spectrum. Players are remaining in the league as demonstrated by the growth in the Masters, O45 and O55 divisions and new teams are forming as players graduate from youth soccer or move into Calgary.

Teams may participate in both the indoor and outdoor seasons, although their placement within the league can vary between the two. Newly registered teams in the Open Division are required to start in the lowest division. Those demonstrating strong performance during the season have the option to participate in the league’s Promotional Challenge held at the end of each season. An undefeated team from Division 6 has the ability, through a series of challenge games, to earn a position in Division 3 for the following season. Teams from all other divisions have the ability to move up two divisions based on results from challenge games, i.e. from Division 4 to Division 2.

Age Demographics of the Men’s Program

When making the move from youth soccer to adult programs players are also making the move from age based programs to those based upon prior performance. Within youth programs players and teams move within age groups, with the potential of under aged players playing into older age categories. Within adult programs players are not required to move playing categories as they age and often teams will be comprised of a diverse age range. Graduating U18 Tier 1 teams are predominantly comprised of 18 year olds. Within the AMSL the average player age in the men’s division was 26 in 2012. Teams in adult programs will often supplement their roster with new players however; rarely will an entire team change over between seasons.

While the greatest majority of U19 players start in lower divisions in CUSA, U19 aged players did comprise 7.5% of Division 1 in 2015 with 21 registered players between 10 teams. This is in contrast to the U23 players comprising 40% of the AMSL membership, 31% of Premier and 25% of Division 1. This would be consistent with the time referenced as being required to adjust to the style of adult game and the required physical size to compete. Add to the fact that within U18 the entire program averages 30 teams over the past few years. CUSA Open Men’s Division ranges between 123 to 140 teams, all of which have the opportunity to register U19 players.

Co-Ed Program – Just for Kicks

The Calgary Coed Rec Soccer (Coed) program was started in 2002 out of the Calgary Soccer Centre as a way for adults (18+) to learn and enjoy the game of soccer in a fun, social and recreational environment. The Coed program now offers both an Indoor and Outdoor (7v7) season throughout the year. Calgary Coed strives for adult players to have fun on and off the field and creates a social atmosphere for players to have fun and learn the game of soccer. Throughout the growing years of the Coed program teams are able to take part in various skill levels. With the vast amount of levels throughout the program it allows a multitude of players to enjoy the game of soccer and develop their skills.

The Outdoor program was started by CUSA in 2015 where a total of 6 teams participated in 11 v 11 soccer. To wrap up Competitive the season, the Outdoor Fall Cup was offered to teams as a Austria & Belgium 7 v 7 event, a total of 4 teams participated. With the feedback of teams and the success of the Outdoor Fall Cup, the current Outdoor program transitioned from 11 v 11 to Semi-Competitive 7 v 7. Teams play on smaller artificial fields at the Calgary Canada & Denmark Soccer Centre with field dimensions/nets similar to what is offered to the youth U12 program offered by the Calgary Minor Soccer Association. Ecuador & Faroe Islands The summer 2016 program will be the final year for the seeding/regular season format. The Winter 2016/17 season will kick off into a promotional/relegation format, where Recreational final standing at the end of the regular season will determine the promotion and relegation eligibility to the Ghana & Honudras teams. The divisional winner and runner up (1st/2nd) will be eligible for promotion to the next higher division while the bottom 2nd placed teams will be subject to relegation to Ultra-Recreational the next lower division. Promotion/Relegation will only Ireland & Japan affect teams season to season i.e. Summer to Summer and Winter to Winter.

Coed has seen an increase over the years when it first started out in 2002 with a total of 21 teams; it has since grown to a peak of 109 teams during the Winter 2010/11 season. The league has subsequently sustained over 90 teams during the following seasons and over 70 teams during the summer season.

It remains the only Alberta Soccer Association sanctioned Coed Soccer league and the only league with CSA certified officials in Calgary.

-22- Co-Ed Fair Play – My Game is Fair Play

Fair play is a fundamental part of the game of soccer. It represents the positive benefits of playing by the rules, using common sense and respecting fellow players, referees, opponents and fans. FIFA created the "My Game is Fair Play" slogan to promote playing by the rules, being sportsmanlike, and showing respect for referees, teammates, opponents and fans. It is an easy to remember slogan that ALL players should abide by, on and off the field of play.

The Calgary Coed program followed in the footsteps of Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA)to promote the famous “My Game Is Fair Play” slogan by creating the Fair Play Award. The Fair Play Award is awarded to the team with the highest Fair Play points in each division that represents playing by the rules, being sportsmanlike, showing respect to opponents, referees and teammates. Winner of this award are based on their total points accumulated throughout the season + half of their total Fair Play Points.

Fair Play Points are earned during each game rated by the referee on a scale from zero (0) to ten (10. Factors throughout the season such as yellow or red cards received by team officials/players, forfeitures may affect overall Fair Play ratings. Teams are expected to earn at least 7 Fair Play Points per game over the course of the season.

-24- Copa Futsal

Copa Futsal became an Associate Member of Calgary United Soccer for the 2015 16 Indoor Season. Futsal is the official FIFA and UEFA version of indoor 5 a side football and indeed the only small sided game recognized internationally by every confederation.

Futsal is a sport in its own right which does not compete with football but serves to enrich it. It is widely viewed as the ideal skill building environment for producing technically excellent football players. There are proven benefits to playing Futsal for the technical skill development of young players, with particular emphasis on the skills of passing, dribbling and close control.

The main feature of the game is the ball which is a size 4 slightly weighted leather ball with restricted bounce rather than the fluffy, bouncy, green ball traditional to the indoor game in Canada.

Photo Credit: Sleepy Kitty Productions In 2015 10 teams participated in the league playing Sunday nights at Genesis Centre. We look forward to the new upcoming season ahead by announcing a new Women’s Futsal League as well as the chance to send our best team to nationals. We are able to do so by joining forces with Ambrose University to play at a collegiate level as well as play on a proper gym floor.

Our mission is to provide futsal as an affordable alternative to all athletes from the amateur to collegiate level. Futsal Fever is a platform for Calgarians, especially newcomers, to participate in this fast-pace and fun alternative form of soccer.

Women’s Program

Calgary United Soccer expanded its programs beyond the delivery of men’s and adult coed soccer to include the delivery of a women’s program commencing in the 2016 Outdoor Season. The new program gave the female players in Calgary and area a new league to play in. The inaugural season saw 9 teams participate in the Classics Division. With the interest in female soccer being strong across the nation CUSA anticipates that this will be an area of additional growth in future seasons.

-25- Alberta Major League The Alberta Major Soccer League (AMSL) started as an idea from Adrian Newman, Bill Malone and Mike Traficante to start a provincial- wide league to help Alberta teams prepare and compete at Provincial and National Championships. The league is now entering its 25th season. The men’s program started play in 1992 and the women’s program began in 1993. The top teams from Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer and Lethbridge compete for the chance to represent Alberta at Canada Soccer Association’s National Club Championships.

Alberta has captured 15 National Championships, between the men’s and women’s leagues, including 6 men’s championships. In the past 10 years, Calgary men’s teams have claimed 6 league titles and Callies Major won the National Championship in 2007 and 2008.

The AMSL league play season runs from May to September with the Provincial Championships held as the marque event in Alberta Soccer’s Senior Soccer Fest over the September Long Weekend.

Calgary has been home to various professional soccer teams in the last 40 years. One of the earliest iterations of professional soccer was the Calgary Boomers. The team finished with 10 wins and 8 losses in the 1980-1981 North American Soccer League Indoor Season which did not qualify them for playoffs. In the 1981 Outdoor Season, the Boomers finished 2nd after league play with a 17 Win 15 Loss effort, but the Regular Season success did not continue after being eliminated by the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in the first round of the playoffs. The Boomers did not continue operations after the 1981 season.

Calgary United FC were the last professional indoor team participating in the Canadian Major Indoor Soccer League from 2008 to 2012. In they lost to Edmonton in the finals twice and in 2010 and 2011 in quarterfinals to the American teams. The CMISL folded prior to commencement of the 2013 season.

The Calgary Mustangs joined the Canadian Professional Soccer League for the league’s only season in 1983. Originally a 6 team league, 2 teams folded mid-season creating chaos amongst the remaining teams. After almost 2 months, the remaining 4 teams decided to suspend operations and hold a final playoff to determine the champion. The Mustangs lost in the semi-finals to the eventual winner Edmonton Eagles.

The next Calgary professional team came in the form of the Calgary Kickers within Canadian Soccer League’s 1987 season. They became the Strikers in their last season in 1989. The Kickers took the league by storm in their first season by winning their division and the league title. Calgary struggled in their final two years with first round exits in both seasons. The community-owned team folded after the season.

-28- The Calgary Storm entered the 2001 United Soccer Leagues Premier Development League (USL PDL) as apart of a three team expansion, bringing the number of teams to 44. The team took home the Regular Season title and finished runner-up to the league champions after the playoffs. The USL PDL was the 4th division within the USL and the Storm moved to the 4th division A-League. They played 3 more seasons, known as the Mustangs in their last season. The Storm only qualified for the playoffs once more, losing in the first round.

Calgary Foothills Football Club began in 2014 within the USL PDL. In only their second full season in the PDL Calgary Foothills FC have had a Cinderella season. They were voted to only have a 4% chance of winning the Northwestern division. A division that includes the Seattle Sounders U23 and Portland Timbers U23, whom they beat both in regular season play enroute to winning the Northwest division. Foothills FC then beat Seattle Sounders, for the third time in nine days, in the first round of play offs to qualify for the Western Conference finals.

They won the Western Conference beating FC Golden State and then powerhouse FC Tuscon, and made the final four. Foothills FC moved on to beat the Ocean City Nor’Easters in New Jersey, in the final four to make the PDL final. Calgary Foothills FC made the finals of the Premier Development League championship vs. Michigan Bucks in Pontiac, Michigan where they lost in an 3-2 heartbreak.

-29- Cups, Tournaments & Special Events

Calgary United Soccer continues to expand the number of playing opportunities and competitions offered to members in addition to league play. In addition the league has played host to a variety of different special events in the past year.

The Canada Soccer Sport Chek National Championships brings together the best amateur teams in Canada for an opportunity to showcase their talents on the national stage. October 7 to 12, 2015 saw 22 provincial champions arrive to compete in Calgary. Alberta was the only province that had three teams play in three different medal games on the final Monday afternoon. Edmonton Victoria Women’s captured their third consecutive Jubilee Trophy over Quebec’s Royal Select Beauport. Edmonton Green and Gold finished behind BC’s Estrella de Chile in the Men’s Bronze match. The final saw ’s London Marconi defeat the Edmonton Scottish in a hard fought match. Marconi had in 2014 defeated the Calgary Callies in the Challenge Trophy final.

The weather for the week was remarkable. While the Local Organizing Committee had prepared for the potential of winter-like conditions the competition was held under the fabulous big blue skies that Alberta is known for. In the evenings the sky provided some magnificent sunsets as the competition for the days were wrapping up.

The Tony Marques Memorial Cup has traditionally been a one weekend single-elimination tournament held during the last weekend in May. It is open to non-provincial teams in the Open, Master’s, Over 45 and Over 55 divisions, as well as the Master’s Premier division. Games are shortened to two-25 minute halves which creates a fury of action throughout the weekend.

The competition is named after a past Calgary United Soccer President, the first elected following the amalgamation of Calgary Soccer and United Soccer. Tony played with Juventus in the Men’s Open Premier Division and later in the Master’s Division with many from the same team. Tragically Tony passed away while in Mexico in October 1996.

The Kaiser Cup started in 2008 as an Over 55 tournament in recognition for Bernie Kaiser, who, at the time, was CUSA’s oldest active player. Bernie last played in the tournament in 2012. The competition, prior to 2014, was open for Over 55 players in the Over 45 divisions to register a team to vie for the trophy. The 2012 and 2013 editions of the tournament used a round robin format and the team with the most points won the Kaiser Cup. Due to the Calgary floods, the 2013 tournament was cancelled mid-season and no champion was determined.

The Kaiser Cup was only offered to registered Over 55 league play teams after CUSA started offering a division in 2014. Once league play had finished, the top teams in the standings competed for the coveted Kaiser Cup. The Calgary Nations Cup Tournament began in 2006 in memory of the late Davinder Singh Kajla. This annual tournament has seen 36 different nations compete for the Davinder Singh Kajla Memorial Cup. Competing teams will represent nations, and building their rosters with players who are from those nations or have heritage ties back to their grandparents. The goal behind the tournament is to expand knowledge and excitement around soccer and to keep young adults engaged in building a community that recognizes diversity and works together.

This tournament has become the must see soccer event of the summer and highlights diversity, cultural awareness and sportsmanship amongst players, fans and nations. The Nations Cup has also had a global span outside of Calgary and Alberta. A Fijian newspaper ran a story about the tournament after Team Fiji claimed their first Nations Cup victory in 2013.

Over the years, the Nations Cup has offered four different divisions. The Open Division allows for players aged 16 and older to compete, and showcases some of the best soccer talent in the area. The Players aged 35 and older can sign up for the Master’s Division and shows the legacy of many nations. The Over 45 Division highlights that age is not an issue when representing your country. The Women’s Division displays the growth of premier female soccer. Co-Ed and Over 55 divisions could also be offered in the future to align with all the programs CUSA currently offers.

Outdoor Nations Cup The 11th Annual Outdoor Nation’s Cup was held between July 29th and 2016 All Star Team August 1st 2016. 29 teams registered, the highest number of teams entered in the event, which included a record high 24 Men’s Open teams. 5 Men’s Master’s teams also competed in the tournament. The Nations Cup featured tons of excitement and a very rich display of talented players from across Canada. Coupled with the tremendous growth that the tournament experienced, a new logo to mark the beginning of a new decade of the tournament was also unveiled.

The Zimbabwe Master’s team was crowned champions of the Over 35 division after a very impressive run in the tournament. In what was a very entertaining and tense finale, South Sudan emerged winners in the final Game over Chile to earn the crown of the Men’s Open Division Champions.

The Outdoor Nations Cup inspired CUSA to start an Indoor Nations Cup tournament in 2015. Demand for an indoor tournament had been building for some time, and after the Annex was built at the Calgary Soccer Centre, CUSA brought together 26 teams to the competition. Most nights there was only standing room at the Calgary Soccer Centre as fans poured in to cheer for their countries.

The 2nd Annual Indoor Nations Cup kicked off on March 29th, 2016 at the Calgary Soccer Centre with 14 Men’s Open teams and 6 Men’s Master’s teams vying for the championship. The Canadian Master’s team was able to defend their title over surprise finalist, Serbia. The Boxers, Bras and Beerfest Coed tournament was first offered by CUSA in 2004 with teams playing at the Calgary Soccer Centre. During the early stages of the tournament, team registration was only available to the first 16 teams to register with CUSA. Throughout the years, with more field availability throughout the City of Calgary and the growing interest in the tournament, the 16 team maximum was eliminated and extended to unlimited registration!

The Boxers, Bras and Beerfest Coed tournament is held annually prior to the Winter Coed season. During this tournament, players, spectators, and referees are strongly encouraged to wear boxers and bras over their uniforms while participating in the tournament. The highlight of this tournament is for female/male soccer players to enjoy a fun filled weekend of dressing up in their boxers and/or bras over their uniforms during their matches. The team who dresses the best throughout the tournament is awarded “Best Dressed Team”. Games are typically played at the Calgary Soccer Centre over the two day event with two (2) twenty-five minute halves per game.

The Kick the Winter Blues Coed tournament was started by CUSA in February 2013 as a Men’s/Coed tournament. During this time Calgary Minor Soccer Association (CMSA) hosted a coaching conference which freed up space at the Calgary Soccer Centre. This allowed for the tournament to kick off, where it hosted 12 Coed teams and 7 Men’s during the first year. During the 2014 season, the tournament was moved from February to December and is now only offered to the coed program.

The Kick the Winter Blues is growing into a popular tournament to end the year with a fun and social event right before the Christmas break. The 4th annual tournament will be held on December 16-17, 2016.

-43- Discipline Report

CUSA is committed to delivering a competitive, fun and SAFE soccer experience for its members. This means striking a balance between ensuring that players are able to compete in the programs within the laws of the game and application of sanctions that are sufficient to deter undesirable actions on or around the pitch.

Discipline Committee: Over the course of 2016 so far we have held 16 discipline committee hearing evenings. This is when players dispute the initial decision given out by the Discipline Coordinator, or sometimes in certain circumstances when players must attend a hearing as compulsory. Our committee is made up of three people who volunteer their time: 1. An experienced Chairperson, who is often still playing or involved in the game in some capacity. 2. An experienced referee/official, who can offer their insight from a referee’s perspective. 3. A member at large; this can be any responsible individual from any club within our system

We encourage and seek to make this as diverse as possible, so that it is mutually beneficial for both CUSA to have variety and for the individuals and teams to have transparency into how our Discipline process operates. So far in 2016, our committee has comprised of 25 different people.

We have also invited in several other teams to our committee in an unofficial capacity; for example when we see behavioral patterns emerging or when they are due to play a team against which there have been problems during previous games. The teams seem to have responded well to this pro-active approach; they are able to voice their views and our committee are able to impart advice to help the teams in their future conduct.

2015/16 Indoor had more overall red cards than 2014/15 Indoor. Roughly half of the increases were boarding calls, perhaps in part due to extra training for the referees as we work to continue ensuring player safety is of uppermost importance.

RMOC reviews twice annually the local ratings assigned to officials along with the local game ratings. As part of this review process the team submissions for Referee Evaluations are taken into consideration. Without this feedback, be it for a good or a poor performance by the official, RMOC has only limited mentorship and assessment reports to consider as the determinant for a referee’s rating.

Calgary Street Soccer is a registered non-profit organization formed to help homeless men and women get their lives back on track through the power of sport, specifically soccer. The benefits of playing a team sport are physical, emotional and psychological.

The initiative started in 2006 and has led teams to the Homeless World Cup. Over 300 individuals have been apart of programs in , , , and, of course, Calgary. The Homeless World Cup has been held annually since 2003. Canada first competed in 2004 but has never finished in the top 4 at any tournament. Calgary hosted the National Championship in 2008, which is used to select the individuals who represent Canada at the World Cup.

By providing the facilities, equipment, and structure for a relatively inexpensive team sport like soccer, the Calgary Street Soccer offers a positive, character building experience that players can carry into the rest of their lives.

CUSA members contribute $10 from each team registration to this program.

KidSport Calgary is the largest of the 178 KidSport chapters working across Canada. Its mission is to make sure no child is on the sidelines because they cannot afford sport registration fees. According to a 2014 CIBC national survey, a third of Canadian children cannot afford to participate in organized sports due to high registration fees. Alberta has the highest costs of children's sport in Canada; on average, Alberta parents spend $1,428 per child each year to participate in sports.

Soccer is the most supported sports, helping 1,574 kids and donating $403,325 in 2015. Hockey is the next largest sport which KidSport supports with 485 kids in 2015.

The Calgary chapter of KidSport was founded in 1995 and is an amateur athletic association rather than a registered charity. It is eligible to issue donation receipts.

CUSA was named KidSport Calgary’s MVP of the Month in November 2015. CUSA has supported KidSport for over 8 years and donated over $65,000. CUSA Members contribute $20 from each team registration to this program.
