Letter from the President Dear members, stakeholders and fans of the beautiful game in Calgary, It is my pleasure to present the 2016 Annual Report for Calgary United Soccer Association. Much was achieved during the course of the year and your association finished the year on a strong financial and strategic foundation. We believe that the year ahead presents many opportunities to further provide leadership on issues that matter to our members, and we look forward to the continued pursuit of excellence in this regard. The association has experienced significant growth during the past couple of years, with the introduction of new programs and the expansion of existing ones. 311 registered teams participated in the 2015 outdoor season, the most in the association’s history, including the successful launch of the first 11-aside outdoor coed program. The winter of 2015/16 included the introduction of a futsal program, beginning with ten teams in a single division and strong growth prospects going into this winter. The 2016 outdoor season was highlighted by the successful introduction of a women’s program, which will also be introduced for the upcoming winter season. The year was punctuated by the co-hosting of the 2015 Sport Chek National Club Championships Challenge Trophy and Jubilee Trophy in October of 2015. CUSA received numerous accolades from teams and associations from around the country for the exceptional organization of the event and on our ability and willingness to be accommodating. This year also represented the 25th anniversary of the Alberta Major Soccer League. For the first time in the club’s history, Calgary’s Villains Elite FC won the 2015 Championship. Since the AMSL’s founding, Alberta has captured more national championships than any other province, highlighting the success of the league in supporting player development in Alberta. Competitions aside, the association continued to support the community through not-for-profit organizations, donating over $17,000 to KidSport and the Calgary Street Soccer Program over the course of the year. Also of note, Calgary United Soccer Association was proud to win the Organizational Diversity Award as part of the 20th annual Immigrants of Distinction Awards ceremony hosted by Immigrant Services Calgary. The award has been presented since 1997 and honours the contributions and exceptional achievements of immigrants and refugees in the Calgary area. CUSA was recognized for fostering an environment of inclusiveness and diversity that benefits the many communities in the city. The year ahead presents numerous opportunities and the association is well poised to take on the challenge. Of particular focus in the year ahead will be the continued expansion of the women’s program, the growth of futsal, expanding on early efforts to collectively promote improved transition between youth and adult programs, generating non-fee based revenue and engaging with our fellow soccer associations to capture the City’s attention with respect to facilities. We continue to work hard for our members and look forward to sharing the successes of these upcoming efforts during the course of the next twelve months. The awards banquet has been held since 1997 and honors the contributions and exceptional achievements of immigrants and refugees in the Calgary area. This year’s gala was held on March 16th. Calgary United Soccer President, Jasprit Lail, on behalf of Calgary United Soccer, was honored to accept the award for Organizational Diversity. The roots of diversity within Calgary United Soccer extend far beyond our organization. Soccer is the most celebrated game in the world, and for generations Calgary’s economic success has attracted new families from all corners of the globe. We don’t need to promote diversity; we merely need to embrace it. A quick scan through the team names throughout our divisions exemplifies our success in having done so. We continue to actively embrace diversity through inclusive policies and practices that encourage participation in soccer for everyone in this city. These values are reflected in our mission and vision, and lead to a culture at Calgary United Soccer that was born out of diversity rather than one that adopted it as a critical value. -6- Succeeding in Our Mission The Board and Administration of CUSA are dedicated to fulfilling the association’s mission through the establishment and achievement of the following goals and objectives: Uphold the Foundation Act as diligent stewards of the association by regularly assessing and refining policies and procedures related to governance, leadership and financial stability. Grow the Game Contribute positively to growth in soccer by delivering superior programs and services while embracing growth and diversity through organizational development and partnerships.
