Next day one forgets it all. The year hands over its legacy, knowledge to the subsequent year. Few of the experiences and knowledge learnt are enormous while others may not be. It is definitely a matter of satisfaction that the general awareness of environmental issues has increased. At the same time, we cannot ignore the fact that lot more is to be done to protect our eco system from pollution. It is heartening to see people becoming more vigilant against increased menace of violence and terror. Huge time is being spent on deliberation in resolving these issues, which requires fast and prompt action. On the auspicious occasion of the New Year, I am happy to share with you that we are transforming "Ahimsa Yatra" (Journey of Non - violence) program into "Ahimsa Samavaay" (Joint efforts for Non - violence), which is based on seven cardinal principles - a) Development of balanced personality through Ahimsa. b) Solving the family dilemma through Ahimsa. c) Solving the caste and communal problems through Ahimsa. d) To undertake efforts for making the concept of "Economics of Ahimsa" more wide spread & extensive. e) Extension of Ahimsa in the international world through "Ahimsa Universal".

  • A Study on Religion
A Study on Religion Religious studies is the academic field of multi-disciplinary, secular study of religious beliefs, behaviors, and institutions. It describes, compares, interprets, and explains religion, emphasizing systematic, historically based, and cross-cultural perspectives. While theology attempts to understand the nature of transcendent or supernatural forces (such as deities), religious studies tries to study religious behavior and belief from outside any particular religious viewpoint. Religious studies draws upon multiple disciplines and their methodologies including anthropology, sociology, psychology, philosophy, and history of religion. Religious studies originated in the nineteenth century, when scholarly and historical analysis of the Bible had flourished, and Hindu and Buddhist texts were first being translated into European languages. Early influential scholars included Friedrich Max Müller, in England, and Cornelius P. Tiele, in the Netherlands. Today religious studies is practiced by scholars worldwide. In its early years, it was known as Comparative Religion or the Science of Religion and, in the USA, there are those who today also know the field as the History of religion (associated with methodological traditions traced to the University of Chicago in general, and in particular Mircea Eliade, from the late 1950s through to the late 1980s). The field is known as Religionswissenschaft in Germany and Sciences de la religion in the French-speaking world. The term "religion" originated from the Latin noun "religio", that was nominalized from one of three verbs: "relegere" (to turn to constantly/observe conscientiously); "religare" (to bind oneself [back]); and "reeligare" (to choose again).[1] Because of these three different meanings, an etymological analysis alone does not resolve the ambiguity of defining religion, since each verb points to a different understanding of what religion is.[2] During the Medieval Period, the term "religious" was used as a noun to describe someone who had joined a monastic order (a "religious").

  • Diwa Li and Jainism
October, 2016 Vol. No. 195 Ahimsa Times in World Over + 100000 The Only Jain E-Magazine Community Service for 14 Continuous Years Readership DIWA LI AND JAINISM Diwali has a very special significance in Jainism. It marks the anniversary of Nirvana of Mahavira's soul, the twenty fourth Jain Tirthankara of present cosmic age. It is celebrated at the same time as the Hindu festival of Diwali. Diwali marks the New Year for the Jain group and it likewise remembers the passing commemoration of their 24th Tirthankara Mahavira and his achievement of moksha. Mahavira attained Moksha on this day at Pavapuri on Oct. 15, 527 BCE, on Chaturdashi of Kartika, as confirmed by Tilyapannatti of Yativrashaba. Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara of this era, revitalised Jain dharma. According to tradition, the chief disciple of Mahavira, Ganadhara Gautam Swami also attained complete knowledge (Kevala Jnana) on this day, thus making Diwali one of the most important Jain festivals. Mahavira attained his nirvana at the dawn of the amavasya (new moon). According to the Swetamber text Kalpasutra, many gods were present there, illuminating the darkness. The following night was pitch black without the light of the gods or the moon. To symbolically keep the light of their master's knowledge alive, 16 Gana-kings, 9 Malla and 9 Lichchhavi, of Kasi and Kosal, illuminated their doors. They said: "Since the light of knowledge is gone, we will make light of ordinary matter" (" Rc aW c, [ W cè Pःb ". Dipavali was mentioned in Jain books as the date of the nirvana of Mahavira.

  • Demographic Trends in Jaina Monasticism
12 DEMOGRAPHIC TRENDS IN JAINA MONASTICISM Peter Flügel The study of Jainism as a living religion is still hampered by a lack of reliable sociological and demographic information both on the Jain laity and Jain mendicants.1 Most empirical studies to date have been thematically oriented or were of an exploratory nature. They were based on the methods advanced by the classical anthropological village studies or on small surveys of a non- representative nature.2 In both cases, the units of investigation were defined in terms of observer categories3 which were often created ad hoc in the field due to the advantages of snowball sampling under conditions of limited resources. In a paper read at the American Oriental Society Meeting in 1978, at a time when comprehensive field studies had yet to be conducted, the late Kendall Folkert (1993: 156) suggested avoiding the inevitable abstractions of ‘general accounts of the Jains’ by concentrating on ‘the smaller divisions within the tradition’ which ‘have actually been the basic units of the tradition’. What Folkert had in mind was to study the individual ‘schools, sects or orders’ (gaccha) of the Jain mendicant tradition,4 rather than ‘Jain religious culture’ in general.5 Certainly, not all Jains coalesce around monastic groups, but the majority does so in one way or another. The investigation of categories which are recognised by the Jains themselves promises indeed to yield testable results of greater accuracy and relevance for the Jain community itself. However, the research programme envisaged
