With opera tions of the G a utra in a lrea dy supporting in exc ess of 6 000 jobs, future growth in pa ssenger numbers a nd the extension of the G a utra in, a s well loc a lisa tion of rolling stoc k ma intena nc e a nd building of rolling stoc k, c a n inc rea se this number dra ma tic a lly. For every R1m invested in future expa nsion, a pproxima tely a n extra 5 jobs c a n be c reated.

However, in 2014, sa fety is one of the c c entra l elements highlighted by c ommuters a s being a rea son tha t a ttra c ts them to using the G a utra in.

This c a n be seen in the Rhodesfield, Ma rlboro South a nd Modderfontein area s surrounding the respec tive sta tions.

More tha n 30% of c ommuters tra vel the entire dista nc e of the link between Pretoria C BD a nd Pa rt sta tion (Joha nnesburg C BD). A further 22% travels between Pretoria C BD a nd Sa ndton. From there c ommuters would ma ke use of other mea ns to get to their fina l destina tions. This supports the view tha t a rail network is well suited to c over longer dista nc e c onnec tions a nd integra tes ea sily with other modes of tra nsport.

The N1 c orridor between Joha nnesburg a nd Pretoria is one of the most c ongested roa ds in South Afric a . The la rge ma jority of c ommuters who ma ke use of the G a utrain, use it to get to a nd from the offic e. As more tha n 50% of G a utra in users ma ke use of priva te vehic les to get to a nd from the sta tion, it is a good indic a tion tha t these vehic les would ha ve been on the roa d, proba bly during pea k times. The G a utra in therefor ma kes a n importa nt c ontribution to reduc e c ongestion during pea k hours
