The language data, thus collected are presented upto tahsIl, sub-tahsIl, urban agglomaratlOn, town and urban area level of the State In this volume The table which forms part of the household series tables of the 1981 Census IS entitled Table HH-16-Households and household populatIon by language mainly spoken in the household (inclusive of variants grouped under each). Neema, Assistant Compilor (viii) NOTE ON THE LANGUAGE DATA In the 1981 Census a new questIon on the 'Language mamly spoken m the Household' was asked in the Household Schedule alongwIth the two usual language questIOns on 'mother tongue' and 'other languages known' 10 the IndlVidual SlIp ThIs mformatlOn adds not only a new dImensIOn to the language profile of the country but a useful one, for It prOVIdes a dynamIC aspect of the language behaVIOur as agaInst the more or less stable pIcture thrown up by the mother tongue data The mstItutlOnal households whIch are ImgUlstically heterogenous and mayor may not have a umform household language are excluded from these data Out of the total number of households of 783,794 the number of IllstltutlOnal house holds IS only 1,312 wIth 23,243 populatIon 1 e only 0 54 per cent of total population. QuestlOn 5 on 'Language mainly spoken III the household' in the Household Schedule was canvassed In all the households other than InstItutIOnal households. The raw returns were rather unusuaI1y large. All these returns were scrutlllIzed followmg usual ImgUlstIc methods mcludmg studYIng 'language speCImens' and undertakmg field lDvestigations. Speakers covered by these languages constitute 95.94 per cent of the total household populatIOn excludIng institutional household populatIOn. The remaInIng 4.06 per cent IS accounted for by the rest of the languages. HH-16 LANGUAGE MAINLY SPOKEN IN THE HOUSEHOLD Part A' Households and Household populatIOn by language mamly spoken in the household (inclusive of vanants grouped under each) specIfied in Schedule VIII to the Constitution of India. Part B . Households and Household population by language mainly spoken in the household (inclusive of varIants where grouped) other than those specIfied III Schedule VITI to the ConstItutIOn of IndIa. FLY-LEAF These tables present the languages mainly spoken In the household, on the basIs of Household Schedule of the Ccnsus of India 1981. AU tables include houseless households but exclude Institutional Households. The question on household language at the 1981 Census and Instructions to enumerators were as follows. Question 5' Language mainly Spoken in the household. Definition :-A household is a group of persons who commonly live together and would take their meals from a common kitchen unless the exigenCies of work prevented any of them from doing so There may be a household of persons related by blood or a household of unrelated persons or having a mIX of both. Examples of unrelated households are boarding houses, messes, hostels, reSIdential hotels, rescue homes, jails, ashrams etc. Tbese are called 'InstitutIOnal Housebolds'. There may be one member households, 2 member households or multi-member households. For Census purposes, each one of these types is regarded as 'Household'. Instructions to Enumerators .- You have to ascertain from the head of the household about the language WhICh IS mamly spoken m tbe household You have to record the answer faIthfully as returned. Tbere may be cases where one or two persons of the household may be speakmg other languages also, but the language to be recorded bere IS the one WhICh IS spoken mostly by tbe members of the bousehold among themselves The language spoken in the household should not be confused witb the mother tougue of each individual member of tbe household. This has been done on the basis of linguistic informatIOn readIly avaIlable or m the lIght of studIes already made. Those IdentIfiable varIants WhICh returned 10,000 or more speakers each at aU-Inola level and have been grouped under parts A and B languages are shown below .
