FACETS OF MODERN CEYLON HISTORY THROUGH THE LETTERS OF JERONIS PIERIS BY MICHAEL ROBERT Hannadige Jeronis Pieris (1829-1894) was educated at the Colombo Academy and thereafter joined his in-laws, the brothers Jeronis and Susew de Soysa, as a manager of their ventures in the Kandyan highlands. Arrack-renter, trader, plantation owner, philanthro- pist and man of letters, his career pro- vides fascinating sidelights on the social and economic history of British Ceylon. Using Jeronis Pieris's letters as a point of departure and assisted by the stock of knowledge he has gather- ed during his researches into the is- land's history, the author analyses several facets of colonial history: the foundations of social dominance within indigenous society in pre-British times; the processes of elite formation in the nineteenth century; the process of Wes- ternisation and the role of indigenous elites as auxiliaries and supporters of the colonial rulers; the events leading to the Kandyan Marriage Ordinance no. 13 of 1859; entrepreneurship; the question of the conflict for land bet- ween coffee planters and villagers in the Kandyan hill-country; and the question whether the expansion of plantations had disastrous effects on the stock of cattle in the Kandyan dis- tricts. This analysis is threaded by in- formation on the Hannadige- Pieris and Warusahannadige de Soysa families and by attention to the various sources available to the historians of nineteenth century Ceylon. I conducted my audit in accordance with Sri Lanka Auditing Standards consistent with International Standards of Supreme Audit Institutions (ISSAI 1000-1810). Those Standards require that I comply with ethical requirements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free from material misstatements. An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. -

It gives me great pleasure to note herein a positive progress made in implementing administrative functions related to culture and the arts which have inextricable relations with the human life. This progress is an eloquent testimony to the fulfilment of objectives set by the ministry and other institutions functioning under its purview. It further confirms the betterment of ordinary public during the period where Sri Lanka forges ahead to be the “Wonder of Asia”. Our attempt to mark the progress of our functions in an environment conducive to the spiritual development without sticking to the advancement of science and technology has succeeded. The speciality in the achievement is the integration between our programmes and national heritage which directed the thinking of ordinary public towards arts and beauty of life. Without being captivated by modern scientific and technological implements, we could successfully register a remarkable advancement in affairs related to arts in a background that is conducive to spiritual development. -

This article concentrates on two different Ravana conceptualizations: Ravana as a warrior king and Ravana as a healer. At the Sri Devram Maha Viharaya, a recently constructed Buddhist complex in Colombo, Ravana has become the object of devotion. In addition to erecting a Ravana statue in a shrine of his own, two annual rituals for Ravana are organized by this temple. In these rituals we can clearly discern the two previously mentioned conceptualizations: the Ravana perahera (procession) mainly concentrates on Ravana’s martial side by exalting Ravana as warrior king, and in the maha Ravana nanumura mangalyaya, a ritual which focusses on healing, his benevolent side as a healer is stressed. These conceptualizations from the broader Ravana discourse are ritualized in iconography, attributes, and sacred substances. The focus on ritual invention in this article not only directs our attention to the creativity within the rituals but also to the wider context of these developments: the glorification of an ancient civilization as part of increased nationalistic sentiments and an increased assertiveness among the Sinhalese Buddhist majority in post-war Sri Lanka. -

Tourism Governance for Sustainable Heritage Tourism in Sri Lankan Heritage Destinations Sivesan Sivanandamoorthy This thesis is submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Education and Arts Federation University Australia Ballarat, Victoria Australia Submitted in December 2016 ABSTRACT This thesis investigates tourism governance models for sustainable heritage tourism in Kandy, a world heritage city situated in central Sri Lanka. Additionally, it explains how the success of sustainable heritage tourism has underpinned sustainable livelihoods development from a socio-cultural perspective. The main objective is to find, identify and assess the influence of tourism governance on sustainable heritage tourism in Sri Lanka. Stemming from this approach is the development of a tourism governance model for sustainable heritage tourism in Kandy. This thesis is intended as a response to the challenges of adopting a sustainable livelihoods development approach. Accordingly, it investigates the role sustainable heritage tourism plays in host community development within the context of sociocultural, economic and environmental aspects in Kandy. Employing a qualitative methodological approach, this thesis is underpinned by an interpretive research philosophy. Research data was collected through field-based in- country interviews and open-ended questionnaires as this approach allowed respondents to offer more information and to include their feelings, attitudes and understanding of the subject. Research results from in-country fieldwork reveal that tourism governance models have a major influence on the viability of sustainable heritage tourism at Sri Lankan heritage destinations. Macro-scale and micro-scale factors were found to be influential in tourism governance models. Additionally, sustainable heritage tourism was found to be a persuasive factor in host community development. -

THE PROJECT FOR FORMULATION OF GREATER KANDY URBAN PLAN Final Report: Vol.2 Main Text CHAPTER 6 SECTORAL SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS 6.1 Transport 6.1.1 General Transport, specifically traffic congestion, is one of the major urban issues in Kandy. There are many factors that aggravate traffic congestion, including (i) the concentration of public facilities in the city centre which generates much traffic, (ii) a limited road network in the mountainous area, (iii) traffic congestion in the town centre mixed with through-traffic on the trunk roads to Kandy and daily traffic inside the city, (iv) traffic bottlenecks at bridges, (v) limited areas designated for parking in the city, and (vi) inappropriate traffic management. Various organisations such as Road Development Authority, Kandy Municipality Council, and Strategic Cities Development Project have conducted studies and implemented projects for the transport sector until recently. In this section, past and present transport plans and projects will be reviewed, and based on lessons learned and experiences, the transport sector’s development orientation that will be in conjunction with regional and city levels will be proposed. 6.1.2 Travel Behaviour in the Heritage Area, Kandy Based on the results of the interview survey, travel behaviour of 2,000 households in the Heritage Area is analysed, and this includes trip purpose, traffic distribution, and travel modes. (1) Trip Purpose The survey results show that the trip purpose of the largest share of respondents is commuting to place of work and business (66%). Meanwhile, some respondents commute to do shopping (14%), go to school (7%), and conduct or attend to business (7%). -

Historical Aspects ofCaste in the Kandyan Regionswith Particular Reference to the non-Goyigama Castes ofthe Kagalla District Eric P. Meyer lnalco, France Abstract Archival material of the colonial period, especially at the grass root level, can provide a wealth of historical information on the hitherto little researched caste system of the Kandyan regions: it could shed light on the taxonomy, functional roles, historical evolution, and spatial distribution of castes. In this paper, emphasis is placed on the Kagalla district and on the dynamics of its so-called Duraya social groups. The political economy of the Kandyan kingdom was based on instrumentalization of the caste system: what remained of the caste category after its collapse is a basic issue underlying any study ofcaste under the British. Keywords: Duraya, caste, Kegalle district, colonial period, Ceylon. In present day Sri Lanka, in a large measure, caste identities seem to have been superseded by 'ethnic' identities, at least publicly. On the other hand, caste remains a sensitive issue, which is usually discussed in highly allusive terms. Caste belongs to a kind ofcryptic culture, contrary to India where it has always been openly discussed and politically instrumentalized (Bayly 1999, Rogers 2004). In Sri Lanka, thus the subject has been generally left to the monographs written by social anthropologists while few historians and political scientists have ventured into a field which is supposed to be barren, for want of data- or because caste was considered a minor issue. But the rise of the Karava, Salagama and Durava in the maritime districts during the colonial period has been the subject of extensive research, notably by Michael Roberts (1982) though after Ryan (1953) no study has been undertaken on the history of Kandyan castes except in monographs such as those -of Janice Jiggins (1979)) Tamara Gunasekera (1994) and in the work in progress on the Vaddas by Gananath Obeyesekere (2002). -
STAGING SRI LANKAN DANCERS UNDER BRITISH COLONIAL RULE from the 1870S – 1930S
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: COLONIAL CHOREOGRAPHY: STAGING SRI LANKAN DANCERS UNDER BRITISH COLONIAL RULE FROM THE 1870s – 1930s Sudesh Bandara Mantillake Madamperum Arachchilage, Doctor of Philosophy, 2018. Dissertation directed by: Dr. Esther Kim Lee, School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies. In textbooks the terms “Kandyan dance” and its equivalent in the Sinhala language “udarata nätuma” are used to describe the dance tradition that was predominantly practiced in the Kandyan region of Sri Lanka. Nationalist histories portray Kandyan dance as a continuation of a pristine tradition that was passed down from ancient Sinhala kingdoms. As the Sinhala nationalist discourse glorified Kandyan dance vis à vis its Tamil counterpart, it obscured the British colonial encounter with Kandyan dancers by leaving out a part of the rich history of dance. As I demonstrate in this dissertation, colonialism transformed to a significant extent the Kandyan dancescape of the British colonial period, particularly between the 1870s and 1930s. Therefore, this dissertation re-examines the history of the so-called tradition of Kandyan dance with the focus on the British colonial encounter with performers of the Kandyan region. As a Sri Lankan dancer, I try to trace and interpret the histories of dancers that were ignored or shrouded in silence in colonial and Sinhala national histories. As a historian, I interpret archival materials through textual and visual analysis while as a dancer, I interpret archival materials through my embodied knowledge
