Welcome to Issue 11 of the IHBC Scotland Newsletter for spring 2018 approaching.

A day for the Year of Young People 2018: We hope to dedicate a special day for younger members (aged under 35) towards the end of the year.

CPD on conservation areas at 50 after introduced by the Civic Amenities Act in 1967 on 17 June. We have two events as follows in recognition of this, which will be free to members and also open to non-members for £25. CPD certificates will be issued on request.

Event 1: 50 years of Conservation Areas in Scotland, Carlops and Skirling (on Thursday 19 April 2018): Looking back at what has been achieved through Conservation Areas in the past and forward to what is happening today and planned in the future. The first two conservation areas in Scotland, designated simultaneously by Peebleshire County Council and published in the Gazette on 19 April 1968, were Carlops and Skirling. The next notice was that by Midlothian County Council for its part of Carlops. We aim to first explore Penicuik Conservation area with Midlothian Council , where a CARS is in preparation. Then we will have a detailed look at Carlops Conservation area, a small weaving village, and have a celebratory lunch in the Alan Ramsay Hotel. This counts as 3 hours CPD on the following timetable.

Event 2: 50 years of Conservation Areas in Scotland, Ayr and Maybole (on Friday 11 May 2018): With South Ayrshire Council we will explore the relationship between CA management (including THI) and Ayr Renaissance’s town centre regeneration plans in the morning; and ditto between CA management (including a joint Maybole THI & CARS) and the Maybole regeneration plan. Maybole is also interestingly the last town in Scotland to progress bypass plans says our committee member and past Convenor Paul Zochowski who is arranging the proceedings. Planning (Scotland) Bill Financial Memorandum: We have offered written evidence on this through our Consultations Secretary Charles Strang to the Scottish Parliament’s Finance and Constitution Committee, which has been uploaded onto the IHBC website. Highlighted was the need for greater resources and skills for Planning Authorities; more effective engagement with communities, starting right at the survey stage of Local Development Plans; and the low public confidence in the Scottish Planning System despite its key role in the design and delivery of a sustainable Scotland. IHBC’s first NewsBlog Branches Update: Explore IHBC CPD and more across the UK. IHBC Council+ having a say in the structure and direction of the IHBC last took place in Holborn in November. It will next meet in Peterborough in May to discuss for example ‘reverse mentoring’. A further IHBC member can join in via their branch committee and travel expenses can be reimbursed. Further details....

IHBC’s Marsh Awards for Community Contribution (Retired Member); and for Successful Learning in Heritage Skills: Our committee has nominated a candidate for each award, including on this occasion a young person for the latter, in keeping with Scotland’s Year of Young People 2018.

This award celebrates the contribution of a retired IHBC member to the community (e.g. through BPT involvement, neighbourhood planning, civic and local trusts with heritage interests). The awards are marked with £500 cash and a FREE residential place at IHBC’s next Annual School on 'Our shared heritage' in Belfast. Last year's winner Ken Burley was nominated by the Yorkshire Branch. Further details....

IHBC concerns over EPC: We are one of a number of the organisations to have written, raising concerns on the current approach taken by EPC towards traditionally- built and historic properties. For example from March financial penalties apply to landlords of properties with low assessments. A review of EPC in Scotland is underway and regulations are also set to change in England and Wales this April.

Dundee Conservation Lectures 2018: This year’s programme started on Tuesday 13th February. The full programme on weekly Tuesday evenings is now online. Further details.... Speakers in the programme include Andrew Wright (on an estate’s exemplary approach); Dr James Macaulay (on Charles Rennie Mackintosh); Will Napier and Steven Blench (on historic plasterwork); Kate White (on Japanese Gardens); Dr Peter Burman (‘Spirit of Place’); and Christopher Dingwall (on Humphrey Repton and Valleyfield). Lectures will start at 6pm in University Dalhousie Building, Hawkhill, and are free.

Architectural History and Theory Seminar Series 2018 at ECA: Into its 2nd semester this year there are 3 more public seminars left to run, which take place on selected Tuesdays at 5.15pm, usually in Minto House on Chambers Street, opposite the National Museum of Scotland. Further details....

The Engine Shed: Is running an exhibition, ‘Talking shops – A History of Scotland’s Shops’ from 26th of February to the 22nd of June 2018, which can be visited free from Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm. Also coming soon is a CPD module of taught lectures and site visits looking at the manufacture, use and conservation of glass and glazing systems in Scotland’s historic built environment over the 3 weeks between the 27th March and 16th April (22.5 taught hours). 2017 SURF Award winners: The five category winners in last year’s SURF Awards were announced by Scottish Government Minister for Housing and Local Government, Kevin Stewart MSP, on the evening of Thursday 7 December in Glasgow’s Grand Hotel. Sustainable Development Goals Network the coalition in Scotland hoping to raise awareness, support and track progress of the UN’s SDGs in Scotland is looking to encourage responsibility for the goals at key strategic levels. An invitation was launched in January to organisations and individuals across Scotland to sign an open letter to the Scottish cabinet, Secretary of State, parliamentary committees, political parties, and all 32 local authorities (we hope not excluding Scotland’s 2 NPAs) to demonstrate their commitment to delivering the SDGs by publishing their specific actions.
