They are complemented by learning guides for educational leaders. All are available on the Internet at http://www.prestoungrange.org the Baron Court’s website. They have been sponsored by the Baron Court of Prestoungrange which my family and I re-established when I was granted access to the feudal barony in 1998. But the credit for the scholarship involved and their timeous appearance is entirely attributable to the skill with which Annette MacTavish and Jane Bonnar of the Industrial Heritage Museum service found the excellent authors involved and managed the series through from conception to benefit in use with educational groups. The Baron Court is delighted to be able to work with the Industrial Heritage Museum in this way. We thank the authors one and all for a job well done. It is one more practical contribution to the Museum’s role in helping its visitors to lead their lives today and tomorrow with a better understanding of the lives of those who went before us all. For better and for worse, we stand on their shoulders as we view and enjoy our lives today, and as we in turn craft the world of tomorrow for our children. -

It's where the rich use public transport." Enrique Peñalosa, one time mayor of Bogota. The last ten years have seen achievements that Edinburgh can be proud of. We are the only city in Scotland that saw seen walking, cycling and public transport all strengthen their role between the 2001 and 2011 censuses. Edinburgh now boasts the highest share of travel to work in Scotland by each of foot, cycle and bus and the highest share in the UK for bus. We have also bucked Scottish and UK trends in car ownership; despite increasing affluence, a lower percentage of Edinburgh households owned a car in 2011 than 2001. The next five years promise to be an exciting time. We have delivered the first phase of the new Tram line, and can finally enjoy all its benefits. Transport for Edinburgh will be working to deliver increased integration and co-ordination of the wider public transport network. Edinburgh is joining the growing list of progressive UK cities putting people first through applying 20mph speed limits. -

Introduction and Background In 2016 the Scottish Government announced its intention to support the development of 50,000 new affordable homes in Scotland by March 2021. Meeting this target is ambitious and will require increased investment by the Scottish Government, Local Authorities and Registered Social Landlords and a step change in the pace of housebuilding in order that it is achieved. The delivery of more affordable housing remains a high priority for Midlothian Council which begun a development programme of 1,000 new council houses in Midlothian. The purpose of Midlothian’s Strategic Housing Investment Plan (SHIP) is to set out strategic investment priorities for affordable housing over a 5 year period to achieve the outcomes set out in the Local Housing Strategy (LHS). The SHIP is also the key document for identifying strategic housing projects towards meeting the Government’s 50,000 affordable housing target. This document is updated annually to present up to date information on affordable housing investment plans. The SHIP provides an opportunity for the Council to: • Set out investment priorities for affordable housing and identifies how these will be delivered • Identify the resources required to deliver these priorities • Involve key partners in the delivery of new affordable housing. -

Readers of the Edinburgh News in August may have seen an article titled “Hard-working Arthur Helps Steer Festival”. It starts: “Council chiefs have paid tribute to one of Midlothian Outdoor Festival’s most dedicated volun- teers…..” referring, of course, to Arthur McKenzie, well known in our circles as ever-present on work parties and regular Pentlands walker. It ends with a quote from Arthur – “I’d climb the walls if I had to stay in and watch day- time telly.” From a man in his mid-eighties this is inspirational! Editorial This edition of Pentland Post will be my last as editor, and is, in fact a joint effort by my replacement, Peter Moore, and myself. Peter will assume the role of editor next year, mainly responsible for this magazine and the production of our calendar. Thanks to all who have supported me over the last five years, especially John Stirling and Ian Combe, both regular suppliers of excellent material. Con- tributions from members for this magazine are what make it a good read, so, on Peter’s behalf, I ask you all to consider sending in articles and photographs for May 2020. It also aims to make necessary car travel more sustainable. A travel plan is tailored to the specific circumstances of an organisation and the sites where it is based, taking into account factors such as current modal split, size and location of the organisation or buildings, number of staff employed, the number of visitors and the number of deliveries or contractors servicing buildings. Travel planning is not a one-off document; it is an ongoing process of organisational change, a dynamic process that grows and develops with time to reflect changes in staff and visitor characteristics and the requirements of the organisation implementing the plan. 1.2 This Travel Plan demonstrates how Midlothian Council has applied national, regional and local policy to its own operation, in support of transport policy across Scotland. -
