Introduction Today most energy scenario models only take energy efficiency measures and changes in energy resources into account. However, a large part of the energy consumption is associated with the production of materials. The MATTER-study aims to optimize both the energy and the material flows in Europe in one model. The MARKAL model, a linear optimization model, is used for this purpose. Different Dutch institutes are involved in the project (Bureau B&G, Universities of Groningen and Utrecht and the Free University of Amsterdam. The project is coordinated by the Netherlands Energy Research Foundation ECN. The material flow modeling is divided in the material groups: plastics, natural organic materials,

Paper is indispensable in our daily life for many purposes. It conveys a fantastic variety and volume of messages and information of all kinds via its use in printing and writing-personal and business letters, newspapers, pamphlets, posters, magazines, mail order catalogs, telephone directories, comic books, school books, novels, etc. It is difficult to imagine the modern world without paper. Paper is used to wrap packages. It is also used to make containers for shipping goods ranging from food and drugs to clothing and machinery.     8 Paper and Paperboard Packaging M.J. Kirwan 8.1 INTRODUCTION A wide range of paper and paperboard is used in packaging today – from lightweight infusible tissues for tea and coffee bags to heavy duty boards used in distribution. Paper and paperboard are found wherever products are produced, distributed, marketed and used, and account for about one-third of the total packaging market. Over 40% of all paper and paperboard consumption in Europe is used for packaging and over 50% of the paper and paperboard used for packaging is used by the food industry. One of the earliest references to the use of paper for packaging food products is a patent taken out by Charles Hildeyerd on 16 February 1665 for ‘The way and art of making blew paper used by sugar-bakers and others’ (Hills, 1988). The use of paper and paperboard for packaging purposes accelerated during the latter part of the nineteenth century to meet the needs of manufacturing industry. The manufacture of paper had progressed from a laborious manual operation, one sheet at a time, to continuous high speed production with wood pulp replacing rags as the main raw material. There were also developments in the techniques for printing and converting these materials into packaging containers. Today, examples of the use of paper and paperboard packaging for food can be found in many places, such as supermarkets, traditional markets and retail stores, mail order, fast food, dispensing machines, pharmacies, and in hospital, catering and leisure situations. Uses can be found in packaging all the main categories of food, such as: r dry food products – cereals, biscuits, bread and baked products, tea, coffee, sugar, flour, dry food mixes, etc r frozen foods, chilled foods and ice cream r liquid foods and beverages – juice drinks, milk and milk derived products r chocolate and sugar confectionery r fast foods r fresh produce – fruit, vegetables, meat and fish Packaging made from paper and paperboard is found at the point of sale (primary packs), in storage and for distribution (secondary packaging).

    22) GENERAL PRINCIPLES OF FOOD PACKAGING: PACKAGING MATERIALS 1. Glass Pliny the Elder recorded that Phoenician sailors came ashore and, not finding any local materials suitable for supporting their cooking pots above the sandy shore, used lumps of trona (natural soda or sodium carbonate) that formed part of their ship’s cargo. As the trona was heated in the fire it combined with the sand to give a material that flowed. This story may not be entirely accurate but points to the fact that glass as a man-made material has a long history and some of the oldest dated Middle Eastern pieces are over 4000 years old; a deep blue charm is estimated to date from 7000 BC. Egyptians and Romans fashioned a wide range of intricate and colored glass objects. A highly developed industry existed in Syria in 1500 BC. In medieval times the centre of the glass blowing expertise was Venice (1200-1600 AD). The serendipitous preparation of glass by the Phoenician sailors is basically the same as that used today. A mixture of purified sand is heated with sodium and calcium carbonate together with some sodium sulphate. The gases evolved help to stir the mixture. The addition of calcium is necessary to make the glass insoluble in water - simple sodium glass is water soluble to give a very viscous liquid known as water-glass (used as an egg preservative in WW2). For those who like the chemistry: Na2CO3 + SiO2 -> Na2SiO3 + CO2 CaCO3 + SiO2 -> CaSiO3 + CO2 Na2SO4 + SiO2 -> Na2SiO3 + SO3 Glass made as above is known as soda-glass.
