THE LITURGY OF THE WORD Introit. Sung by the CANTOR ONLY. The Lord was my refuge and my upholder; and he brought me forth into a place of liberty: he delivered me, because he delighted in me. Psalm. I will love thee, O Lord my strength: the Lord is my rock, my fortress and my Saviour. Glory be. Repeat antiphon. Priest. Let us pray. The people kneel. Priest. Our Father who art in heaven hallowed by thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. Priest. Almighty God, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Deacon. Our Lord Jesus Christ said: Hear O Israel, The Lord our God is one Lord; and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and write both these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee. Kyrie eleison. Sung by the CANTOR ONLY. Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison. Kyrie eleison. Gloria in Excelsis. Sung by the CANTOR ONLY. Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee. We give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly king, God the Father Almighty. O Lord, the only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sin of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy, thou only art the Lord; thou only O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen. The Collect of the Day Priest. The Lord be with you. People. And with thy spirit. 3 Priest. Let us pray. O Lord, who never faileth to help and govern them whom thou dost bring up in thy stedfast fear and love: Keep us, we beseech thee, under the protection of thy good providence, and make us to have a perpetual fear and love of thy holy Name; though Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. THE LESSONS The First Lesson Genesis 12: 1-4 Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will show thee: and I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: and I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. So Abram departed, as the Lord had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran. Gradual. Sung by the CANTOR ONLY. When I was in trouble I called upon the Lord: and he heard me. Deliver my soul, O Lord, from lying lips: and from a deceitful tongue. The Second Lesson 1 St. John 3:13-24 Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you. We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death. Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer; and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. Hereby we know love, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shuteth up his heart against him; how dwelleth the love of God in him? My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed, and in truth. And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence towards God. And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. And this is his commandment, That we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him: and hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us. Alleluia. Sung by the CANTOR ONLY. The people stand. Alleluia. Alleluia. God is a righteous Judge, strong and patient: and God is provoked every day. Alleluia. The Gospel St. Luke 14: 15-24 Deacon. The Lord be with you. People. And with thy spirit. Deacon. The Holy Gospel is written in the fourteenth chapter of the Gospel according to Saint Luke, beginning at the fifteenth verse. People. Glory be to thee, O Lord. 4 And one of them that sat at meat with Jesus said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God. Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many; and sent his servant at supper-time to say to them that were bidden, Come, for all things are now ready. And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it; I pray thee have me excused. And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them; I pray thee have me excused. And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come. So that servant came and showed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind.
