In his recent work Jerry Brotton, as a leading expert in the history of maps and Renaissance cartography, presents the histories of twelve maps belonging to different eras from the mystical representations of ancient times to Google Earth. He examines the stories of these twelve maps as having important roles in the context of regional and global perspectives of past and today's world. His book is an interesting and significant contribution to the interdisciplinary approach between history and geography. In addition to the twelve maps, thirty four figures and fifty six illustrations are included in this book, which aims to tell history through maps. All of the maps chosen by the author should not be regarded as the best ones of their times. Conversely, many of them were heavily criticized at the moment of their completion. Some maps were neglected at the time or subsequently dismissed as outdated or obscure. The author stresses that all the maps he analyzed in detail bear witness that one way of trying to understand the histories of our world is by exploring how the spaces within it are mapped (p.16).

  • Antique Maps and the Study Ok Caribbean Prehistory
    ANTIQUE MAPS AND THE STUDY OK CARIBBEAN PREHISTORY Stephen D. Glazier In this presentation I will explore possible uses of sixteenth and seventeenth century maps for the study of Caribbean prehistory and protohistory. Several considerations entered into my choice of maps, the foremost of which was accessibility. Maps covered in this present­ ation are readily available through private collections, the map trade, museums, libraries and in facsimile. Accuracy was a secondary consideration. The succession of New World maps is not a general progression from the speculative to the scientific, and at times, as Bernardo Vega demonstrated in his mono­ graph on the caciques of Hispaniola, early maps may be more accurate than later editions. Professor Vega found that the map of Morales (1508) was far superior to later maps and that it was far more accurate than the published accounts of Las Casas and Oveido (Vega 1980: 22). Tooley (1978: xv), the foremost authority on antique maps, claims that seventeenth century maps are much more "decorative" than sixteenth century maps. Whenever mapmakers of the sixteenth century encountered gaps in their knowledge of an area, they simply left that area blank or added a strapwork cartouche. Seventeenth century map- makers, on the other hand, felt obliged to fill in all gaps by provid­ ing misinformation of depicting native ways of life and flora and fauna. Sea monsters and cannibals were commonly used. All mapmakers claimed to base their works on the "latest" inform­ ation; however, it is my contention that maps are essentially conserv­ ative documents. A number of factors militated against the rapid assimilation of new data.

It was compiled by the dedi- cated work of Eric Wolf from 1984-2007 and Joel Kovarsky from 2007-2017. The worldwide cartographic community thanks them greatly. Recent Publications is a resource for anyone interested in the subject matter. Given the dates of original publication, some of the materi- als cited may or may not be currently available. The information provided in this document starts with Portolan issue number 100 and pro- gresses to issue number 1 (in backwards order of publication, i.e. most recent first).     Early Modern Women: An Interdisciplinary Journal 2012, vol . 7 American Beauties, or What’s Wrong with this Picture? Paintings and Prints of the Women of Virginia from John White to Joan Blaeu Ann Rosalind Jones his essay discusses European pictorial representations of North TAmerica women in six prints from sixteenth- and seventeenth- century books. By analyzing the shifting forms in which European artists presented two women of Virginia, I hope to raise some questions about cultural history. What do these related images reveal about the gendered eye of the Europeans who made them and for whom they were intended? What did an artist on the spot think was significant? What does the reworking of previous images by European print artists tell us about the way they imagined women of the Americas? Or about the way their pub- lishers calculated what would appeal to their readers? And why might all this matter now? Two of these images were engravings printed in the first volume of Theodore de Bry’s America (Frankfurt, 1590), well known now in Early Modern transatlantic studies.1 For the 1590 book the German publisher commissioned Carolus Clusius to write a Latin translation of Thomas Harriot’s 1588 English account of his countrymen’s settlement in Roanoke. FERRIGNO U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY PROFESSIONAL PAPER 1386-E-6 Jan Norway, has 113 square kilometers, or 30 percent of its area, covered by an ice cap and the 20 named outlet glaciers that surmount the active Beerenberg stratovolcano CONTENTS III SATELLITE IMAGE ATLAS OF GLACIERS OF THE WORLD GLACIERS OF GLACIERS OF JAN MAYEN, NORWAY By OLAV ORHEIM1 Abstract Jan Mayen, Norway, the northernmost island on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, has 113 square kilometers covered by glaciers, about 30 percent of its total area. The northern part of the island is the active Beerenberg stratovolcano (2,277 meters high), which is surmounted by an ice cap from which 20 outlet glaciers emanate. Sørbreen is the largest (15 square kilometers) and the best studied of these outlet glaciers. The maximum postglacial expansion of the outlet glaciers occurred at the end of the "Little Ice Age" (around the year 1850), and an oscillating retreat has taken place since that time. A marked advance around 1910 and again in 1960 was separated by a recession that ended about 1950. The 1960 advance was caused by reduced summer temperatures and ablation. The earliest recorded observations of Søbreen were in 1632, but the first modern topographic map was not published until 1959. This map was compiled photogrammetrically from aerial photographs taken in 1949 and 1955. The glaciers on Jan Mayen are especially sensitive to change in climate.
