4. MPEG Layer-3 Audio Encoding
MPEG Layer-3 An introduction to MPEG Layer-3 K. Brandenburg and H. Popp Fraunhofer Institut für Integrierte Schaltungen (IIS) MPEG Layer-3, otherwise known as MP3, has generated a phenomenal interest among Internet users, or at least among those who want to download highly-compressed digital audio files at near-CD quality. This article provides an introduction to the work of the MPEG group which was, and still is, responsible for bringing this open (i.e. non-proprietary) compression standard to the forefront of Internet audio downloads. 1. Introduction The audio coding scheme MPEG Layer-3 will soon celebrate its 10th birthday, having been standardized in 1991. In its first years, the scheme was mainly used within DSP- based codecs for studio applications, allowing professionals to use ISDN phone lines as cost-effective music links with high sound quality. In 1995, MPEG Layer-3 was selected as the audio format for the digital satellite broadcasting system developed by World- Space. This was its first step into the mass market. Its second step soon followed, due to the use of the Internet for the electronic distribution of music. Here, the proliferation of audio material – coded with MPEG Layer-3 (aka MP3) – has shown an exponential growth since 1995. By early 1999, “.mp3” had become the most popular search term on the Web (according to http://www.searchterms.com). In 1998, the “MPMAN” (by Saehan Information Systems, South Korea) was the first portable MP3 player, pioneering the road for numerous other manufacturers of consumer electronics. “MP3” has been featured in many articles, mostly on the business pages of newspapers and periodicals, due to its enormous impact on the recording industry. -

While the firm’s sales growth met shareholder expectations, net income remained largely stable. During the following weeks and months, Siemens’ top management not only faced increased pressure from its shareholders, but also higher environmental uncertainty and stronger global competition than during the early and mid-1990s. The challenge for the top management team was to optimize the business portfolio in a way that promised to add substantial shareholder value over the next years. -

Hubert H. A. Leipzig ist auch heute noch einer der Standorte unserer Sparte Druckweiterverar- beitung. Von den Brüdern Alfred und Charles Harris in den USA, die mit der Erfindung eines Anlegers die Druckgeschwindigkeit der damaligen Druckmaschinen verzehnfachen konnten. Aus diesen Anfängen entwickelte sich einer der führenden Hersteller von Rollenoffset-Maschinen, der heute innerhalb der Heidelberg-Gruppe das Solution Center Web vertritt. Von Ottmar Mergenthaler, dem Erfinder der Linotype-Setz- maschine, der die grafische Industrie veränderte, wie rund 560 Jahre zuvor Johannes Gutenberg mit seiner Erfindung der beweglichen Lettern. Und von Dr.-Ing. Rudolf Hell, dessen 100. Geburtstag wir heute feiern dürfen. Diese Festschrift zeigt den Werdegang des Menschen, Ingenieurs und genialen Erfinders Rudolf Hell und die Geschichte des von ihm gegründeten Unternehmens, das wir 1996 als Linotype- Hell AG in die Heidelberg-Familie aufnehmen konnten. -

Und mp3 ist ein Beispiel für erfolgreiche Forschung, Entwicklung und Vermarktung in Deutschland. Denn ebenso wichtig wie die Entwicklungsarbeit in den späten achtziger und frühen neunziger Jahren war die Vermarktung der neuen Technologie. Die Fraunhofer-Entwickler suchten nach Anwendungsmöglichkeiten für mp3 und hatten bald die Vision von mobilen Musikspielern, auf denen Musikliebhaber ihre gesamte Sammlung speichern können. Anfangs für ihre Ideen noch belächelt, schafften es das Fraunhofer-Team gegen den Widerstand der etablierten Industrie, mp3 zu einem Welterfolg zu führen. Heinz Gerhäuser: »mp3 hat die Art wie wir Musik kaufen und hören verändert. Heute tragen wir unsere gesamte Musiksammlung auf Musikspielern nicht größer als eine Streichholzschachtel mit uns spazieren. Lieder im mp3-Format spielen immer und überall, kein Gerät das mp3 nicht unterstützt. Wir kaufen Musik online über das Internet und nicht mehr im Kaufhaus. Die Tech- nologie, die eine gesamte Industrie revolutioniert hat, nahm ihren Anfang in Erlangen. Und nur dank der unermüdlichen Entwicklungsarbeit und dank langjährigen Vermarktungsbemühungen wurde mp3 letztlich zu dem was es heute ist: Ein kulturelles Phänomen made in Germany.« Idee und Entwicklung mp3 codiert und speichert Musik.
