Referring to the company's history of achieving success through well engineered refinements of other people's inventions, one Fortune analyst noted that "second is best" might well serve as Siemens' motto. But opportunism is not the only interesting facet of Siemens' history, which is also a story of a long family tradition and intimate involvement with some of the most important events of the 19th and 20th centuries. Siemens & Halske was founded in Berlin in 1847 by Werner Siemens and J. G. Halske to manufacture and install telegraphic systems. Siemens, a former artillery officer in the Prussian army and an engineer who already owned a profitable patent for electroplating, was the driving force behind the company and remained so for the rest of his life. The company received its first major commission in 1848, when it contracted to build a telegraph link between Berlin and Frankfurt. Construction of telegraph systems boomed in the mid 19th century, and Siemens & Halske was well equipped to take advantage of the situation. In 1853, it received a commission to build an extensive telegraph system in Russia. Upon its completion, the company opened an office in St. Petersburg under the direction of Werner Siemens' brother Carl Siemens. In 1857 Siemens & Halske helped develop the first successful deep sea telegraphic cable.

Cranefield In thanking you for the invitation to appear before you I must also apologize for speaking on a subject slightly different from the one that was originally announced on the program. I was originally invited to address you on the subject of "Carl Ludwig, Emil du Bois-Reymond and Swiss Physiology". I suggested alternatives: "Carl Ludwig: Physiology As Measurement" or perhaps "Carl Ludwig and Swiss Physiology". But the recent Zürich thesis of Dr. Zupan\ examines Ludwig's Zürich years and Ludwig's later influence on Swiss Physiology in great detail and presents much valuable new information, to which I could add nothing. As to "Carl Ludwig: Physiology as Measurement", that is, after all, the main theme of Schröer's excellent biography of Ludwig®. And so I returned, indeed found myself drawn back, to my original subject: "Carl Ludwig and Emil Bois-Reymond", but with an added subtitle: "A Study in Contrasts." I will begin with the briefest of sketches of these men, to orient those who are not historians of physiology. Ludwig and du Bois-Reymond were among the most famous and influential medical scientists of the 19th century®. Although Ludwig's research was far ranging, much of it dealt in one way or another with the cardiovascular system. Du Bois-Reymond's interests were narrowly focused on a single subject, a subject once called Animal Electri- city and now called electrophysiology. Each of these "representative men" had a connection to Switzerland; that is why I was invited to talk about them.

    National Socialism and the war economy 1933–1945 In Nazi Germany, rearmament and the wartime economy dominated Siemens’ business activi• ties, too. During this time, production of military goods increasingly displaced civilian manu• facturing, particularly after the hostilities that had begun as a European conflict escalated into a World War. The company’s activities during this period also included the use of forced labor. Siemens has taken a clear position on this matter – repeatedly, responsibly and clearly. As soon as the Nazis took power in January 1933, they began to interfere with the German economy and German companies. Ac- cording to the country’s new rulers, the economy’s sole purpose was to serve the interests of a strong state – interests that includ- ed, in particular, German rearmament. Rearmament brings economic growth – And profits for Siemens The German electrical engineering industry was, accordingly, also included in the Nazis’ rearmament plans at an early stage and prof- ited to a great extent from the armament program launched in 1935. Spurred by public-sector contracts, a period of economic growth, which began in 1936 at the latest with the initiation of a four-year plan to prepare the army and the economy for war, con- tinued until 1945.
