UNIT – I Sources The Literay Sources Sangam Period The consisted, of Tolkappiyam a Tamil grammar work, eight Anthologies (Ettutogai), the ten poems (Padinen kell kanakku ) the twin epics, Silappadikaram and Manimekalai and other poems. The sangam works dealt with the aharm and puram life of the people. To collect various information regarding politics, society, religion and economy of the sangam period, these works are useful. The sangam works were secular in character. Kallabhra period The religious works such as Tamil Navalar Charital,Periyapuranam and Yapperumkalam were religious oriented, they served little purpose. Pallava Period Devaram, written by Apper, simdarar and Sambandar gave references tot eh socio economic and the religious activities of the Pallava age. The religious oriented Nalayira Tivya Prabandam also provided materials to know the relation of the Pallavas with the contemporary rulers of South India. The Nandikkalambakam of Nandivarman III and Bharatavenba of Perumdevanar give a clear account of the political activities of Nandivarman III. The early pandya period Limited Tamil sources are available for the study of the early Pandyas. The Pandikkovai, the Periyapuranam, the Divya Suri Carita and the Guruparamparai throw light on the study of the Pandyas. The Chola Period The chola empire under Vijayalaya and his successors witnessed one of the progressive periods of literary and religious revival in south India The works of South Indian Vishnavism arranged by Nambi Andar Nambi provide amble information about the domination of Hindu religion in south India. -

Blasphemy in a Secular State: Some Reflections
BLASPHEMY IN A SECULAR STATE: SOME REFLECTIONS Belachew Mekuria Fikre ♣ Abstract Anti-blasphemy laws have endured criticism in light of the modern, secular and democratic state system of our time. For example, Ethiopia’s criminal law provisions on blasphemous utterances, as well as on outrage to religious peace and feeling, have been maintained unaltered since they were enacted in 1957. However, the shift observed within the international human rights discourse tends to consider anti-blasphemy laws as going against freedom of expression. The recent Human Rights Committee General Comment No. 34 calls for a restrictive application of these laws for the full realisation of many of the rights within the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Secularism and human rights perspectives envisage legal protection to the believer and not the belief. Lessons can be drawn from the legal framework of defamation which considers injuries to the person rather than to institutions or to the impersonal sacred truth. It is argued that secular states can ‘promote reverence at the public level for private feelings’ through well-recognised laws of defamation and prohibition of hate speech rather than laws of blasphemy. This relocates the role of the state to its proper perspective in the context of its role in promoting interfaith dialogue, harmony and tolerance. McGilvray In the context of Sri Lanka’s inter-ethnic conflict between the Tamils and the Sinhalese, the Tamil- speaking Muslims or Moors occupy a unique position. Unlike the historically insurrectionist Māppilas of Kerala or the assimilationist Marakkāyars of coastal Tamilnadu, the Sri Lankan Muslim urban elite has fostered an Arab Islamic identity in the 20th century which has severed them from the Dravidian separatist campaign of the Hindu and Christian Tamils. This has placed the Muslim farmers in the Tamil-speaking north-eastern region in an awkward and dangeruus situation, because they would be geographically central to any future Tamil homeland. -

Abstract of paper: This paper is about the significance of print in the history of Tamil migration to Southeast Asia. During the age of Empire people migrated from India to colonial Malaya resulting in the creation of newer cultural and social groups in their destination (s). What this .meant in a post-colonial context is that while they are citizens of a country they share languages of culture, religion and politics with 'ethnic kin' in other countries. Tamils and Tamil-speaking Muslims from India were one such highly mobile group. They could truly be called 'Bay of Bengal transnational communities' dispersed in Myanmar, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam. The construction of post-colonial national boundaries constricted but did not affect the transnationalism of Tamils across geographies and nation-states. A thriving and successful print culture is a pointer to the manner in which Tamils and Tamil Muslim expressed their transnational (Tamil) identities. Such a print culture this paper suggests is a rich and valuable source of social history. In the context of the Malay world, these traders and merchants engaged uncommercial intercourse with the region since the 8th century C.E. They became well-established and known among both locals and the Europeans with certain unique characteristics which evolved periodically in South India as well as South East Asia. Designations towards Tamil Muslims - such as Yavana, Sonakar, Anjuvanam, Chuliar, and Thulukkar - evolved periodically and in parallel to historical developments as well as demographical changes in South India. In contrast, within Malaysia, terms such as Keling, Chulia, and Mamak are made in reference to this community. Some of these terms are predominantly used in Malaysia, which may have derogative connotations and are often misunderstood by local Malaysians. 1 INTRODUCTION (Bayly, 1989:86). RINGKASAN DISERTASI SUPPORT FOR ETHNO-RELIGIOUS VIOLENCE IN INDONESIA1 Y. Tri Subagya Universitas Sanata Dharma, Yogyakarta E-mail: [email protected] Diterima: 2-11-2015 Direvisi: 23-11-2015 Disetujui: 7-12-2015 ABTRACT This study focused on the relationship between ethno-religious identification and support for intergroup violence in Indonesia. It employed a cross-cultural comparative research design involving Muslim and Christian respondents from different ethnic groups in two research areas. One of these areas, Ambon, experiences frequent eruptions of inter-group violence, while the other, Yogyakarta, is relatively peaceful; while disputes have occurred occasionally, they have not led to massive intergroup violence. This research used a mixture of quantitative and qualitative approaches This study finds stronger identification with religion than with ethnicity. Muslims show greater ethno-religious identification than Christians. It also presents evidence for the proposition regarding religiocentrism in which a positive evaluation of the religious in-group is related to in-group identification and induces derogatory attitudes towards out-groups. The findings are also consistent with propositions concerning nationalistic attitudes which suggest that increased ethno-religious identification reduces nationalism. Ambon, yang merupakan salah satu wilayah penelitian, sering mengalami letupan kekerasan antarkelompok, sedangkan di Yogyakarta kondisinya relatif tenang; walaupun permusuhan kadang-kadang terjadi, hal tersebut tidak meledak menjadi kekerasan antarkelompok yang masif. -
