INTRODUCTION Numerous species of the family Lamiaceae which are rich in volatile oils are of great importance as herbs and spices. As regards their morphology and chemical compositions, a substantial proportion of these plants are polymorphic. Such diversity raises important theoretical and practical issues. It can be challenging to classify the species, basic research for the purposes of variety breeding is incomplete, and quality assurance is also often problematic. Consistent with these features, the variability in essential oil composition may alter the gastronomic value of the spices and modify the physiological effects of the herbs in the event of medicinal use. Therefore, it is easy to understand why complex explorative pharmacological studies of the active constituents are playing an increasingly important role over and above chemical and analytical evaluations. Practical evaluations of numerous Lamiaceae species have brought various classes of constituents other than essential oils into focus. These include hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives (mainly rosmarinic acid) as representatives of natural antioxidants, and also triterpene carboxylic acids, characterized by physiological activity. In this context, complex research into the family Lamiaceae was begun some decades ago as a cooperative program in which several Hungarian research centers are engaged in the evaluation of medicinal plants.

Troubsko, Česká republika Received November 30, 2014, accepted January 30, 2015 Abstract In this study, total phenolic content (TPC) and rosmarinic acid (RA) of 37 samples sage (Salvia L.) of extracts were determined using spectrophotometric methods. The amount of total phenols was analysed with Folin-Ciocalteu reagents. Gallic acid was used as a standard compound and the total phenols were expressed as mg.g−1 gallic acid equivalents of dried plant material. The values of the extracts displayed substantial differences. All of the investigated species exceptSalvia jurisicii (990.79 mg GAE. g−1 d.w.) exhibited higher content of phenolics. Among the studies, species demonstrated the highest content of phenol, followed in sequence by Salvia tomentosa, Salvia fruticosa, Salvia triloba, Salvia officinalis ‘Extrakta’, Salvia officinalis. TPC varied from 990.79 to 4459.88 mg GAE. g−1 d.w. in the extracts. The total amount of RA was between 0.88 and 8.04% among species.

Salvia candidissima subsp. occidentalis Hedge is one of these subspecies. It differs from the other subspecies with smaller leaves, thick indumentum and white flowers (Figure 1 a, b). This taxon is widespread and common for Inner Anatolia, Turkey (Davis, 1985).

This genus belongs to the advanced angiosperm family Acanthaceae, for which few micromorphological leaf studies exist. Results revealed both glandular and non-glandular trichomes, the latter being more abundant on leaf veins, particularly on the abaxial surface of very young leaves. With leaf maturity, the density of non-glandular trichomes decreased. Glandular trichomes were rare and of two types: long-stalked capitate and globose-like peltate trichomes. Capitate trichomes were observed only on the abaxial leaf surface, while peltate trichomes were distributed on both adaxial and abaxial leaf surfaces. Antimicrobial properties of essential oils (EOs) reveal that Gram-positive bacteria are more vulnerable than Gram-negative bacteria. A number of EO components have been identified as effective antibacterials, e.g. carvacrol, thymol, eugenol, cinnamaldehyde and cinnamic acid, having minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) at higher dilutions in vitro. EOs comprise a large number of components and it is likely that their mode of action involves several targets in the bacterial cell. The potency of naturally occurring antimicrobial agents or extracts from plants, ranges of microbial susceptibility and factors influencing antimicrobial action and their antioxidative properties, aimed at food preservation, are reviewed in this article. Methods employed for estimation of inhibitory activity, mode of action and synergistic and antagonistic effects are evaluated. The principal compounds accumulated were flavones and their 6-methoxy derivatives, whereas flavonols were rarely encountered. The chemodiversity observed was relatively low, with only some 15 derivatives being found. The new data are discussed in relation to published data, and chemosystematic aspects are briefly addressed. Of the studied species, Salvia arizonica yielded only a rare diterpene quinone, demethylfruticulin A.
