( 3 ) PREFACE

Malcolm Forbes said “Education's purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one” and this is something which is always followed by Government of Kerala, Department of Education, whether through their education system framework or recent enhancement in their curriculum. The aim of their Curriculum is not just to let learners obtain basic knowledge but to make them life- long learners. The purpose of this book is to nurture individuality and thus enhance one's innate potentials which help in increasing the self-study mode for students. This book strengthens knowledge and attitude related to subject. This book is designed in such a way that students can set their own goals and can improve their problem solving and thinking skills. This book is strictly as per the latest SCERT Kerala Textbook, introduced by SSLC Board in 2016. It follows the latest syllabus prescribed by the board. It contains all types of questions like Textbook Questions, VSA Questions (Very Short Answer), SA Questions (Short Answer), MCQs (Multiple Choice Questions) and LA Questions (Long Answer). A synopsis is given for every chapter which contains important points from that chapter. Each chapter has high quality figures wherever required for better, fast and clear understanding. OSWAAL SSLC Question Bank is different and better in terms of High Quality Questions which are developed by 'OSWAAL Expert Panel' which ensures success in examination. The Question Bank is arranged ‘Topic-Wise’ where each topic from every chapter is explained in detail. High quality figures and Flow charts are given to improve retention of concepts. Through OSWAAL Books students are taught how to think, not what to think. We at OSWAAL Books try to use quality content, standard language, creativity and high quality figures, which makes readers to enjoy it because we believe if our readers don't enjoy reading our book then there is no use in reading it at all. This is one of the reasons that the scope of this book extends from students to teachers. Teachers can use this book as a perfect teaching guide and students can use this book for good learning and practice. At last we would like to thank our authors, editors, reviewers and specially students whom we request to send suggestions regularly which will help in continuous improvement of this book and will make this book “One of the Best”. Wish you all Happy Learning. –Publisher

( 4 ) Unit - I : CHAPTER HUES OF LIFE 1 VANKA —

Summary Nine year old Vanka Zhukov was an apprentice to Alyakhin ‘the shoemaker’ in Moscow. Orphan Vanka had joined Alyakhin three months ago. Vanka did not go to his bed on Christmas Eve, rather he waited for his master and mistress and the senior apprentices to go to church. Then, he took out a bottle of ink and a rusted pen and a crumpled paper and sat down to write. While writing, he was anxiously looking at the door and the window. Vanka was writing a letter to his grandfather Konstantin Makarich, whom he missed a lot. Vanka’s letter said that he was sending him Christmas greetings and God’s blessings. He also reminded him that he was an orphan and Konstan- tin was all that he had been left with. Vanka raised his eyes to the dark window-pane in which he saw his grandfather, who was a night watchman on the estate of some gentle folk called Zhivarev. He was a small, lean, old man of about sixty-five with a smiling face and eyes bleary with drink. At night, he used to guide the estate with old and a dog, called Eel. Eel was wonderfully respectful and an insinuating dog. Vanka sighed and went on writing that the last day, his master beat him with the stirrup-strap because he had slept while rocking their baby. Even the mistress was very inhuman with him. The other apprentices made fun of him. They often forced Vanka to steal the master’s cucumbers and the master would beat him up with the first thing he found. Vanka complained that he was also not fed properly. Then, Vanka pleaded his grandfather in the letter to take him away from there because he couldn’t bear it any longer. His grandpa convinced his grandad that he would pray for him, he should take him away or else he would die. As Vanka went on writing, his lips twitched and he gave a sob. He went on, “ I will grind your snuff and will pray for you. You can flog me if I am naughty. Vanka further added that he couldn’t stand it, it was killing him. He even thought of running away to the village but he had no boots and was afraid of the frost. Vanka was lost in beautiful memories of Christmas. He remembered his favourite Miss Olga Ignatyevna when his mother, Pelageya was alive, she was in service at the big house. Miss Olga used to give Vanka sweets and teach him to read, write and count and even to dance. But when Pelageya died, the glory ended and he was sent back to the kitchen to his grandad and from there to Moscow. Vanka continued his letter and pleaded his grandad to take him away as he was always hungry and miserable there in Moscow. Ending up the letter Vanka folded the sheet and kept it in an envelop addressed as ‘To grandfather in the village’ then he added ‘To, KONSTANTIN MAKARICH’. Vanka ran on the cold streets to the nearest letter-box and dropped his precious letter. An hour later, lulled by his rosy hopes, he was fast asleep. He dreamt of the stove, his grandfather and Eel Summary in Malayalam ²XÉÄáÕÏTÞÏ ÕÞXµ çÝÞçAÞÕí çÎÞØíçµÞÕßW æºøáMáµáJßÏÞÏ ¥ÜcÞ¶ßæa ²øá Öß×cÈÞÏßøáKá.¥ÈÞÅÈÞÏ ÕÞXµ, ¥ÜcÞ¶Þæa µâæ¿ çºVKÄí ÎâKáÎÞØ¢ ÎáXÉÞÃí.dµßØñáÎØßæa ÄçÜKÞZ ÕÞXµ ©ùBÞX çÉÞÏßÜï. ¥ÕX Äæa ϼÎÞÈÈá¢, ϼÎÞÈJßÏá¢, ÎáÄßVK Öß×czÞøᢠÉUßÏßW çÉÞµáÕÞX µÞJßøáKá.
