THE SOUTHPORT SCHOOL INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS 2016 LearningSpirit Community Leadership Headmaster’s Welcome

It’s my great pleasure to welcome you into the community of The Southport School and if I haven’t already met you in person, I look forward to doing that at the earliest opportunity.

You are now part of a great school with an enviable reputation, a proud history and worthy traditions that can be traced back to the beginning of the last century. Since the foundation of the School in 1901, generations of Old Southportonians have added to the lustre of the TSS reputation, written their own chapters in its history and upheld its traditions. This is a priceless legacy that they bestow upon you, together with the charge that you should strive your utmost to nurture and enhance it and in time pass it to those boys who will follow in your footsteps.

I wish you well as you rise to the challenges, explore the new horizons and seize the opportunities of this exciting period of your life.

Mr Greg Wain - Headmaster

TRADITION LEARNINGSPIRIT BOYS COMMUNITYSPIRITUALITY LEADERSHIPCOURAGE The Campus Environment

At first glance it’s obvious the TSS campus ranks as one of the finest and most unique in the country. The serene and welcoming site on the banks of the Gold Coast’s Nerang River immediately sets it apart, while the blend of grand heritage buildings and their modern counterparts and extensive facilities projects a reassuring ambience of proud tradition mingled with contemporary relevance.

The School’s facilities are extensive and impressive, providing for every pertinent academic, sporting, cultural and social aspect of a boy’s education and development in the fullest sense. Contained within the 51.7-hectare campus and infrastructure TSS provides the following

• A world-class Centre • Academic and Leadership Centre • Specialist Lego and Robotics Programs • A complete “wireless technology” and BYOD campus • Nationally renowned Boys’ Reading Program & Libraries • 250-seat collegiate Chapel • Modern, purpose-built Boarding Houses • 600-seat Annand Drama & Music Theatre • State-of-the-art Science Centre • 9 ovals and extensive sporting facilities (including the Centenary Sports Centre with weights room, courts and area) • Tennis & Pool Complex (including heated 12-lane Olympic-sized and 25m pools) • 24-hour Health Centre • Commercial kitchens • Hall of Fame archival display • Detailed individual tracking of students academic results 2015 Destinations and Results

Year 12 Students 2015 Academic Results The overall OP results from the 2015 cohort were highly commendable, and were a fine reflection of a great group of academically able and conscientious Year 12s. Sixteen our graduating Year 12 students received an OP1-3 which ensures entry to many excellent university courses.

Three boys received an OP 1 which would satisfy the academic entry requirement for Harvard University or similar calibre institutions. Indeed one of our 2012 graduates has just become the second TSS boy in three years to be offered a place at Harvard.

A total of 130 students from the 2015 Year 12 cohort applied through the 9% 2% Other Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) for a tertiary place. This QTAC figure does not include International Students: • 115 (90%) received an offer of a place 29% • 74 (57%) received an offer of preference 1. 45% Note: we advise our students to aim very high for their first preference and be more realistic in their second, third and fourth preference. • 91 (71%) received an offer of preference 1 – 2 15% • 112 (87%) received an offer of preference 1 – 4

Many other students gained places at prestigious universities such as University of Sydney, University of Melbourne, Australian National University, and international destinations including the USA and UK which are not included in the above Queensland figures.

The ability to make music, to sing, to perform, is a lifetime gift that liberates the spirit and provides a marvellous vehicle for self-expression, creativity and building confidence. It’s no accident then, that a very high participation rate in the Performing Arts is a special feature of TSS. We view it as an invaluable experience and so too do the boys, as a large majority seize the opportunities to get involved in the music program, whether by learning an instrument or singing in a choir. There are many different groups within the music structure, some of which include Big Band, Brass Ensemble, Choir, Clarinet Ensemble, Concert Band, Drumline, Guitar Ensemble, Orchestra, Saxophone Ensemble and String Ensemble.

Music at TSS offers your son the exciting prospect of learning an instrument and participating in ensembles through programs designed to cater for different abilities and experiences. Instrumental and vocal music enjoys a very high profile within the school community, and a number of excellent groups work outside of formal school hours in order to broaden students’ ability and appreciation.

Boys are encouraged to complete Trinity Guildhall of London and AMEB exams and are offered opportunities to attend the Griffith Conservatorium of Music program.

Learning to Lead

You’ll see and hear this expression used frequently throughout TSS, yet it’s not simply a hackneyed phrase or empty slogan. Rather, it’s a succinct and potential expression of a vital element in the School’s mission; to foster in every student the qualities of leadership that will serve him in both his personal advancement and on the larger stage of society.

To ensure that programs and activities remain always appropriate and relevant to students at every stage of their growth and constant, significant change, TSS has a Director of Leadership who is wholly focused on this task. A new Leadership Centre provides a dedicated physical space in which the boys can recognise, explore and enhance their individual leadership potential, and further illustrates TSS’s commitment to “take the lead on Leadership”.

TSS also offers a strong cadet program in AIRFORCE, NAVY and ARMY. Gifted and Talented and Honours Program

Boarding Our philosophy of pastoral care is based on a ninety year-old House system. The House system was introduced in 1909 with the establishment of Thorold, Delpratt and McKinley Houses. A fourth boarding house, Biddle, was added in 1987. Boarding has always been a tradition at TSS and recent upgrades provide some of the best boarding facilities in Australia. As well as our traditional intake from country areas we have boarders from all states and cities in Australia and international students from Asia, Europe, Middle East and the South Pacific. There are five modern boarding houses on the TSS campus, each with their own Housemaster, Deputy Housemaster and female Matron. Furthermore, each house also has a minimum of four boarding supervisors. Boarding is only available from Year 7 to Year 12. Boys entering one of the Senior School’s Boarding Houses remain in the House for all their years at TSS. This allows them to form long lasting friendships, not only with boys their age, but also with both younger and older boys. This system also ensures strong relationships are built between the resident staff and, the boys and their parents, encouraging a ‘home away from home’ environment and open three-way communication. The resident staff in each House operate a roster system, which allows constant supervision and care for the boys. This ensures each house has a Housemaster and an Assistant who can lead the Pastoral Care. This is further enhanced by the availability of the School Chaplain, School Counsellor and the Dean of Students. In addition, each Year group in each House has a Pastoral Care Teacher, who works as an advisor, providing guidance and direction for each student. Once a week the Pastoral Care Teacher works on a number of different topics, with a focus on life skills such as Leadership, Self-Esteem, Careers and Anti-Bulling strategies, and other topics. Weekend activities are coordinated for boarders. Such activities include, but not limited to, movies, outdoor activities, Sunday surf bus, and house birthday teas. It is our top priority to ensure all students feel safe and secure in a family environment. http://www.tss.qld.edu.au/Admissions/international_students/InternationalBoarding.aspx

School Holiday Arrangements The boarding house is closed during school holidays. Students must either return home to their parents/legal guardians OR an option is available to stay in a ‘home stay’ environment with students placed by Gold Coast Student Accommodation Centre, by arrangement with TSS. Additional fees apply. For further information on Homestay please contact Dee Williams on (07) 5531 9850 or via email [email protected]

Communication • To communicate efficiently with parents in an efficient, fast and ecologically responsible way, we will communicate with parents at the email addresses you provide to us. If you do not provide an email address or if you request in writing that we provide information other than by electronic means, we will communicate by the other means reasonably requested. • Where communication is to be with the entire school community or with identifiable sections of the school community, we may communicate through the school website. • We will display on our website the policies and rules with which you and your son are expected to comply.

Classes and Teaching Staff TSS is a very busy place. There is always something happening. TSS has a very wide academic programmes and a fantastic cultural programme as well as a wide variety of sports that you can be a participant in! So if you enjoy learning, are a gifted speaker or musician or just want to try a different sport or experience in Australia, we are sure there will be something for you to enjoy whilst a student at TSS. The biggest change you may notice is the class sizes. There will be between 20-25 students in your classes, 15 in your roll call class. You may also have a different teacher for every subject you undertake at TSS. Our teachers are fully qualified in their teaching area and are very approachable if you experience any difficulties in understanding the subject. ESL Support is provided after school hours if required during Boarder Prep time on Tues, Wed and Thurs nights. Support for Maths Thursday lunchtime. One of the things that you may also find different is that instead of you being in the same classroom and the teacher coming to you, at TSS you move to a different classroom for the various subjects. In the first few weeks keep the school map in your Record Book (your school diary) as it is a big campus and it is easy to get lost if you are unsure of the building’s names! On the following page of this booklet you should write down the names of the teachers in each subject so you will remember their names. You should receive on arrival to the school, or shortly after, a computer generated timetable that will show your classes, what lesson (period) the lesson is in ,the room number and teacher’s name. Keep a copy of this information in your Record Book (your school diary). Also keep your school calendar with your Record Book. In the first few weeks there are lots of things you need to go to and checking it every day is a good idea! Between 8.30-8.40 each morning you must report to your roll call teacher who will tick your name off the roll (mark you are in attendance). If you do not do this you will be marked absent for the day. You will then need to go to Student Services to correct this. If you are living with a parent or guardian they must ring or email the school by 9am to advise you will not be attending. Phone: (07) 5531 9850 If you are a boarder and unwell, contact your Housemaster so that he/she will let the school know you are not going to be at school that day. Every time you need to leave the school you must notify the Housemaster and the Dean of Students office before you leave the School. Housemasters are very important people. They help you by: • Helping you get to know the other people in your House. • Helping you build friendships with other students. • Being aware of any problems you may be having and being supportive in times of need. • Obtaining counselling or advice for you when necessary. Roll Call teachers inform you of events/exams/excursions happening every day, as well as monitoring your behaviour and standard of dress and appearance- haircuts/shaving/polished shoes. TSS will do everything it can to keep you safe. If you decide to play a sport, you will have a qualified coach too on hand to help you. The school also has medical staff at every game to take care of you if you get injured. Our classrooms are also safe environments .However if you notice anything wrong, or feel unsafe, please tell the classroom teacher.

Library http://www.tss.qld.edu.au/Parents_and_Students/Senior/SeniorLibrary/SeniorLibraryHome.aspx As well as a wide range of books, the library also holds magazines, newspapers, audio cassette tapes and DVDs/Videos. A free student computer facility has been set up in the library for all students to use. Laser quality printers and photocopiers are available for you to use. International students will be introduced to library resources during the orientation programme. Internet access and up to date computers are available for your use - free of charge. TSS has a ‘Bring Your Own Device’ policy. That means you can bring your own computer to use in class, when your teacher gives you permission. Your own device can also be set up to use the school’s Wi-Fi internet service. See the IT staff at the library for this to be activated. When you enrol, you will be given your login and password to use and be given the rules the school expects you to follow when you use your computer at school. Other Services

Experiencing Problems Sometimes you might feel a little homesick or alone. Speak to your Roll Call teacher, your Housemaster or your Pastoral Care teacher and they might be able to help you. If it is more serious, for example students are making you feel unwelcome, or making you feel sad, you might like to talk to the School Counsellor, the Dean of Students or one of the School’s Child Safety officers. If the problem is a health issue, TSS has a hospital and nursing staff that can offer you advice or make an appointment for you to see a Doctor. If you require assistance in matters relating to legal matters, TSS can arrange for you to speak to a qualified person who could help you. Student Contact Officer...... Olwen Williams...... School Expectations of you as a Student Like in your schools in your home country, TSS expects you to be the very best you can be in all areas of your life. We appreciate that not every person can be the Number 1 student, but are you willing to try your personal best? This is what TSS expects of all its students. Make sure that you bring the correct books, pens and notebooks to classes. In order for you to retain your student Visa you must maintain satisfactory attendance in your course and course progress for each study period as required by TSS. Failure to do so could mean you lose your Visa! (refer Course attendance and Course Progress Policies) On a regular basis you will receive an Academic Report. If you are not fulfilling the requirements of the course you will be interviewed by the Subject Teacher and also, if it is a serious matter, the Dean of Studies who will advise you on how you could be achieving better results in the subject/s. If the problem is more about your attitude rather than your academic ability, a letter may be sent home to your parents asking them to contact the school. So make sure you do your homework, ask questions in class and come prepared to work each lesson and this will help you to achieve! TSS is a Christian school in the Anglican tradition and it is an expectation of you as a student that you will attend Chapel Services. These services help bring the school community closer together. Another important celebration is School Assembly. Assembly is a celebration of the spirit of achievement in the school. The Headmaster and other important people will speak to the school about important things and you will also hear about what other people have achieved in the TSS community. It is vital that any change to your address, email or phone number is advised to the school immediately. So…..relax, take a deep breath, put a smile on your face and above all, make the most of all your opportunities at TSS. Welcome! Change of Address/Contact Details All parents and students are required to notify the School of a change of address, phone or email while enrolled in the course within seven days of a change. Students who live in School approved accommodation must not change agreed arrangements without prior approval of the School.

Appointments during School Hours If a student has an appointment during school hours, the student’s parent must write a letter to be shown to the student’s Housemaster, who will countersign the request. At the time the student is allowed to leave, the student must report to Student Services to sign out.

Outside the School and School hours, the School directs students to follow the law for consumption of alcohol. In addition, the possession, use or smoking of unlawful drugs or any dealings in drugs is forbidden according to the law, and will usually result in dismissal.

For purposes of safety and duty of care, The Southport School’s enrolment policy requires that visa students in Years 1 to 6 should have one of their parents residing on the Gold Coast to supervise and be responsible for them. Visa students in Years 7 to 12 who do not have a parent residing on the Gold Coast will live in the School’s Boarding House to ensure students are safe and properly cared for, and to provide suitable conditions for study. The exceptions are when legally binding arrangements exist, the School may agree to allow an alternative arrangement whereby the student resides with a direct family member over the age of 21 years. Years 7 to 10 are accommodated in share dormitory style areas. Single rooms are allocated to boys in the senior Years 11 and 12. Please refer to the Boarding House website link: http://www.tss.qld.edu.au/Admissions/international_students/InternationalBoarding.aspx The School’s catering service endeavours to provide a familiar diet for boys from other countries whilst also catering for some specific dietary requirements. All The Southport School staff, including all full and part time staff employed in the Boarding House are required to hold Suitability for Child-Related Employment cards, issued by the Queensland Government (commonly known as Blue Cards) and have met the criteria required of the Commission for Children & Young People’s Act, 2000. The focus of an international student’s education at TSS is directed towards his membership of a Christian learning community providing a balanced and holistic education in a safe, supportive and encouraging environment. This focus along with the School’s Duty of Care could be compromised if international boarders were permitted to spend significant time off campus involved in activities other than those for which they have enrolled. It is therefore policy that a boy does not engage in part time or casual employment whilst they are enrolled at The Southport School. This policy is in place to ensure that the student’s welfare is not compromised by agents outside of the School and that the student is able to focus his energies on his academic studies and extra-curricular school based commitments. A student’s academic progress is a condition of maintaining their student visa.

School Holiday Arrangements and Homestay In vacation periods when the Boarding House is closed, boarders are required to return to their parents, reside with a direct family member over the age of 21 years, or apply for Homestay. Additional fees apply. TSS has an arrangement with Gold Coast Student Accommodation Centre (GCSAC) to provide homestay services for students from Year 7 and above during school holidays. TSS is satisfied GCSAC’s policies and procedures for recruiting, recommending, assessing, monitoring and reviewing of homestay placements meet the School’s duty of care and legislative requirements for a student under 18 years of age. TSS works closely with GCSAC to ensure a safe environment and acknowledges and retains full responsibility for approving the accommodation, support and welfare for our students. TSS will monitor student/parent/guardian satisfaction with homestay arrangements by a questionnaire completed by students and host families. Any concerns will be immediately addressed with GCSAC and improvements implemented if necessary. A 24 hour mobile phone access to a senior TSS staff member is provided to parents and families whilst the student is placed in homestay over the holidays. Any unexpected changes during the homestay placement is managed and approved by TSS senior staff prior to GCSAC actioning a change. TSS is committed to reviewing and renewing the binding contract and procedure arrangements with the Homestay organiser each year to best serve the boys and families.

Procedures Students requiring homestay placements for school holiday periods will need to complete an Application for Homestay form (available online at http://www.tss.qld.edu.au/admissions/international_students/policy_and_conditions.aspx). This form is to be submitted to our Homestay Coordinator Ms Dee Williams at our Student Services office or via email at: Dee.Williams@tss. qld.edu.au TSS will provide further information and requests from the boy and family to GCSAC to ensure a suitable placement. GCSAC will assess, place monitor and recruit as per their approved policies and procedures for homestay (this policy is available online at http://www.tss.qld.edu.au/admissions/international_students/policy_and_conditions.aspx) in conjunction with TSS approval: • Enquiry with Homestay Coordinator (Student Services TSS) • Submission of completed GCSAC Homestay Application form • Form emailed to GCSAC with additional information from TSS • GCSAC confirms placement and provides Homestay Family Profile for Homestay Coordinator’s approval and Student’s information • GCSAC to provide Homestay family Blue Card information to TSS • TSS communication with GCSAC re: pick up time and location • If student requires anything during their stay they contact Nicole Willioughby at GCSAC anytime (24 hours a day) who then contacts the TSS Senior Staff Member on holiday duty (24 hour on call) if necessary. • Student and families to submit completed questionnaire at conclusion of homestay. TSS Homestay Coordinator to assess, record and action if required.
