This parameter also reflects the physical feature of the sound generation mechanism. For example, turbulence sound is of quadrupole directivity while fluid-structure interaction often produces a sound of dipole characteristic. Therefore, to reach a proper directivity description is in fact a process of understanding the sound source in a better way. However, in practice, this is often not a simple procedure. As for railway noise engineering, several noise types of different directivity characters are often mixed together, such as wheel and rail radiation, engine and cooling fan noise, scattered fluid sound around bogies and turbulent boundary layer noise along train side surfaces.

    Bike carriage on long-distance trains: 7 basic services that give cyclists a smile A collection of good practice examples from across Europe Authors: Fabian Küster and Ed Lancaster 4/17/2013 Summary In April 2012, ECF published the position paper “Bike and Train: A European Odyssey”.1 In the paper we deplored the fact that the services offered by railway companies often do not meet the basic requirements of cyclists and that current EU law2 on passenger rights for railway customers does not help to advance this matter in a legally binding manner. Fortunately, some railway undertakings have taken measures in recent years to improve the services they offer to cyclists, albeit that this has often been after continuous pressure from ECF’s members. It speaks for itself that the cycling community has welcomed these steps. Other railway companies should follow suit, for 2 main reasons: Attract new customers: Cycling tourism is a booming business, with well over 2.3 billion cycle tourism trips annually in Europe3. A service package that meets the needs of cycling tourists has the potential to attract millions of additional train passengers. A key message ECF made back in 1999 still holds true: “Only bicycle transport by train offers the flexibility to choose the starting point and destination of a cycling trip freely and this is a promising market for all rail investors to invest in.”4 The financial crisis and continuous drop in car sales, along with changing mobility behaviour, in particular among young adults in urban areas, has the potential to win customers for life.

De ICE-T – een hoges- nelheidstreinstel met kanteltechniek – bestaat uit tussenrijtuigen, een restauratierijtuig en twee kopwagens die van machinistencabines zijn voorzien. Het nieuwe aspect daaraan is – behalve de kanteltechniek - het ontbreken van twee motorwagens zoals bij de ICE en ICE 2. Deze zijn niet nodig omdat de draaistellen van de tussenrijtuigen en het restauratierijtuig worden aangedreven. Met andere woorden, de nieuwe ICE-T is een treinstel in de klassieke zin! Een vijfdelig treinstel, dat dus drie aangedreven tussenrijtuigen telt, en daarmee een vermogen van 3000 kW kan ontwikkelen. De maximumsnelheid bedraagt 230 km/h. Het futuristische uiterlijk doet eerder aan een super- sonisch vliegtuig dan aan een IC-trein denken. Belangrijk: Wanneer de ICE-T op modelspoorwegen met FLEISCHMANN model rails wordt ingezet kunnen al gevolg van de kanteltechniek twee treinen elkaar raken. Dit gebeurt alleen als de ICE-T op een binnenboog met radius R1 een rijtuig met een lengte van 282 mm, die op de parallelrail R2 rijdt, tegenkomt of passeert. Bij het gebruik van bovenleiding kunnen als gevolg van de kanteltechniek in de railradius R1 en R2 de binnenste bovenleidingmasten geraakt worden. Zorg daarom voor voldoende ruimte bij het plaatsen van masten. ICE 2 REDESIGN COMPLETED The modernization of all 44 ICE 2 trains has been completed. The interiors have been completely dismantled, repaired and reas- sembled, partly with new components. Improvements include more loading space, new information screens, and the renovation of restaurant and bistro cars and the small children compartment. MORE TALENT 2 TRAINS IN SERVICE The new Talent 2 electric multiple units (EMUs) feature greater comfort for passengers and an excellent level of energy efficiency, including a system for energy recovery. Of the almost 300 vehicles ordered, more than 260 have been delivered so far. LoGISTICS CENTER OPENED IN JAPAN We have opened in Japan our largest logistics center to date. The center is located in Baraki, only 25 kilometers from the center of Tokyo. DB Schenker uses the Baraki Logistics Center, which extends over a total area of 33,000 square meters, for various customers.
