Vidt forskellige skæbner udspiller sig i 1860 på gården Bonderup, hvor ægteparret Heiberg residerer, og den fattige og uheldige Caroline er tjenestepige. Hanne Marie Svendsen: Unn fra Stjernestene - en roman fra det gamle Grønland Gyldendal, 2003. - 476 sider. Med den stærke og lidenskabelige Unn i centrum fortælles om klosterliv, åndelige strømninger og hverdagsliv i 1300-tallets Sydgrønland. Leg med krimigenren Nogle af de store danske sprogkunstnere og sprogfornyere har flirtet lidt med krimigenren. Det er bestemt ikke traditionelle krimier, men med mord på tapetet. Disse bøger er ikke de nemmeste at læse, men de oser af fortælleglæde, de er sprogligt helt i top og de bliver bare bedre af en god diskussion. Pia Juul: Mordet på Halland Tiderne Skifter, 2009. - 187 sider. Forfatteren Bess vågner en morgen ved at hendes kæreste Halland bliver skudt uden for deres hus. Det får hende til at reflektere over sorg og tab. Rune T. Kidde: Julius' afsind Modtryk, 2009. - 173 sider. Julius vokser op omgivet af død, så naturligvis må han selv dræbe. En argentinsk luder, en engelsk milionøse og hans mor og far er blandt ofrene. Henning Mortensen: Næb og kløer Gyldendal, 2005. - 195 sider. Samhørende: Næb og kløer ; Ræven går derude ; Rita Korsika. I Sondrup i området mellem Odder og Horsens bor en række specielle eksistenser og der sker mærkelige ting, blandt andet et uopklaret mordforsøg på arkitekten René. Familien Susanna Alakoski: Svinestierne Gyldendal, 2007. - 257 sider. Pigen Leena fortæller solidarisk, usentimentalt og stærkt om livet i det splinternye sociale boligbyggeri i Ystad, hvor hendes forældres stigende alkoholforbrug langsomt men sikkert bringer familien i opløsning. Rabih Alameddine: Hakawati Hr. Ferdinand, 2009. - 566 sider. Osama al'Kharrat bor i USA men er hjemme i Beirut ved sin fars dødsleje. Gennem tre måneder skabes med fantasifulde, underfundige og tvetydige historier et farvestrålende billede af livet i familien og området i fortid og nutid Paul Auster: Brooklyn dårskab Per Kofod, 2005. - 333 sider. Nathan Glass trækker sig tilbage til Brooklyn for at dø efter en række kræftoperationer, men møder sin nevø og får gennem ham og en række andre personer en ny mission i tilværelsen. Kim Blæsbjerg: Rådhusklatreren Borgen, 2007. - 385 sider. Fabulerende familiekrønike fra det 20. århundrede med William Lundstrøm, hans forfædre tre generationer tilbage og historien som omdrejningspunkt. Keld Conradsen: Stemte s'er Modtryk, 2009. - 198 sider. Fortælleren vender tilbage til barndomsbyen til sin mors begravelse. Hun var tysk flygtning fra 2. verdenskrig, og sønnen forstod hende aldrig helt. Ved læsning af hendes dagbøger åbner hendes verden og en forsinket forståelse sig for ham. Trisse Gejl: Patriarken Lindhardt og Ringhof, 2006. - 411 sider. Den dominerende anmelderfar, den følelsesladede forfatterdatter og den velmenende svigerdatter fortæller skiftevis deres families historie. Det handler om en tilsyneladende velfungerende familie, der går i stykker efter morens alt for tidlige død. Anne Marie Løn: Serafia Lindhardt og Ringhof, 2005. - 310 sider. Varm og solidarisk skildring af Vernas tilværelse med fire børn af diverse fædre, set i tilbageblik nu hvor hun, gammel og skrøbelig, herser med Palle, den næstældste, i et gensidigt afhængighedsforhold, blufærdigt dækket under en hvas omgangstone. Marilynne Robinson: Gilead Gyldendal, 2006. - 222 sider. Pastor John Ames, som er blevet far i en sen alder, sætter sig ned og skriver et brev til sin søn, og fortæller om slægten, om tilværelsen i lillebyen i Iowa, og om sine egne meninger med tilværelsen, som snart er ovre. Kærlighed Kirsten Thorup: Bonsai Gyldendal, 2000. - 265 sider. Beretningen om Nina og Stefans livslange kærlighed, med alle dens åbnende og begrænsende facetter, fortalt dels af dem selv, dels af andre i en kaleidoskopisk mosaik. Ingo Schulze: Adam og Evelyn Tiderne Skifter, 2009. - 300 sider. Adam er glad for sit arbejde som dameskrædder men også for sine kvindelige kunder. Da hans Evelyn griber ham på fersk gerning, flygter hun, men Adam følger efter til Ungarn, hvor de pludselig får mulighed for at komme til Vesten. De selvbiografiske Nogle forfattere bruger egne oplevelser som udgangspunkt for romanen. Lone Aburas: Føtexsøen Gyldendal, 2009. - 163 sider. Lene har en egyptisk far og en dansk mor, så hendes barndomserindringer er lidt anderledes. Det er hendes dagligdag til gengæld ikke, hun er kassedame i Føtex og har en drøm om at blive forfatter en dag. Lone Aburas var den ene modtager af Munch- Christensens debutantpris i 2009. Julia Butschkow: Apropos Opa Samleren, 2009. - 200 sider. Bogens fortæller er en ung pige, der efter en depressionsperiode begynder at undersøge sin families historie. Bogen bliver en familieberetning i korte afsnit, og historien strækker sig fra 2. verdenskrig til nu og fra Berlin over Himmerland til København. Per Olov Enquist: Et andet liv Samleren, 2009. - 491 sider. Selvbiografisk og dokumentarisk roman om Per Olov Enquists eget liv. 1. afsnit handler om bandommen i en landsby i Västerbotten, 2. afsnit er om den glorværdige og internationale karriere, og 3. og sidste handler om alkoholismen og sejren over den. Wojciech Kuczok: Skarn Batzer & Co, 2009. - 223 sider. Delvist selvbiografisk roman om en opvækst i det sydlige Polen med en voldelig og tyrannisk far og et råt miljø i kulminedistriktet. Philip Roth: Enhver Gyldendal, 2007. - 198 sider. I en række erindringsglimt fortælles om en mands liv: barndom, voksenliv, ægteskaber, børn, karriere, aldring og kroppens forfald; kort sagt, rejsen gennem tilværelsen. Robert Zola Christensen: Aldrig så jeg så dejligt et bjerg Gyldendal, 2009. - 223 sider. Ettensohn, Ph.D., Brown University, May 2014. This project evaluates the twinned discourses of globalism and humanitarianism through an analysis of the body in the postcolonial novel. In offering celebratory accounts of the promises of globalization, recent movements in critical theory have privileged the cosmopolitan, transnational, and global over the postcolonial. Recognizing the potential pitfalls of globalism, these theorists have often turned to transnational fiction as supplying a corrective dose of humanitarian sentiment that guards a global affective community against the potential exploitations and excesses of neoliberalism. While authors such as Amitav Ghosh, Nuruddin Farah, and Rohinton Mistry have been read in a transnational, cosmopolitan framework––which they have often courted and constructed––I argue that their theorizations of the body contain a critical, postcolonial rejoinder to the liberal humanist tradition that they seek to critique from within.

Wisner reviews 99 books total, covering the biggest homegrown authors (Achebe, Coetzee, Ngugi), some notable foreigners (Kapuscinski, Chatwin, Bowles), and a host of lesser-knowns. The books were selected from hundreds of works of African literature that Wisner has read: how to whittle hundreds down to just 99 books to represent an entire continent? Wisner says reading widely was key, as was developing a “bullshit detector” for the “false” and “fraudulent” in African lit by living there and working with the legal defense of political prisoners in South Africa and Nambia. Email: [email protected] Solomon Omatsola Azumurana teaches in the Department of English, University of Lagos, Nigeria. Email: [email protected]; [email protected] Melancholia and the search for the lost object in Farah’s Maps Maps, given its intriguing narrative thrusts and multi-axial thematic concerns, is arguably the most studied or analysed of Nur- rudin Farah’s nine prose fictions. The novel’s title as well as its synopsis has naturally dictated the focus of critics on the Western Somalia Liberation Front’s war efforts geared towards liberating the Ogaden from Ethiopian suzerainty and restoring it to Somalia. The nationalist fervour, the war it precipitates and its fallouts of a strife-ridden milieu have such a pervading presence in the novel that the personal experiences of the novel’s two major characters, Askar and Misra, are quite often discussed as basic allegories of ethnic and nationalistic rivalries. This paper focuses on the personal experiences of Farah’s two major characters. It contends that the private story of Askar and Misra is so compelling and central to the many issues broached in the novel that it deserves significant critical attention. Drawing upon Sigmund Freud’s and Melanie Klein’s concepts of melancholia, the paper explores how central the characters’ haunting sense of melancholia is to the happenings in Farah’s Maps.     Re-envisioning the Question of Postcolonial Muslim Identity: Challenges and Opportunities Dr. Jamil Asghar ABSTRACT: In our contemporary era of transnationalism, the issue of identity has assume unprecedented significance and scope. In this paper, I intend to discuss the complexities and nuances of the Muslim identity in the postcolonial literary discourses. One of the basic contentions of the paper is to find some pattern in the transnational and transcultural diversity presently characterizing the Muslim identity discourses. Hence, this paper is a plea to discover some kind of literary and discursive sharedness in the contemporary postcolonial Muslim writings. It has been observed that at this point in time the Muslim identity in not only subject to myriad influences, it is also a topic of heated and passionate debates. In fiction, memoirs, travel writing, media and cultural narratives, the issue of Muslim identity is invested with all kinds of representations ranging from uncouth explosive-bearing terrorists to friendly and sociable people. It has also been shown that the Orientalist legacy, far from being dead, is being given new lease on life by the highly ‘constructed’ and ‘worked over’ images of Muslims in the Western media. The large Muslim diasporic populations settled in the European countries are specifically bearing the brunt of such stereotypical depictions built by media persons, political commentators, analysts and ‘cultural experts’. Faced with this mighty discursive onslaught, the Muslim writers, novelists, poets, intellectuals have been responding variedly and with considerably mixed motives: acceptance, rejection, rectification, resistance, etc. Keywords: Identity, Muslim, diaspora, discourse, postcolonial, representation. Iheka African Literature and the Environment: A Study in Postcolonial Ecocriticism , examines how African literary texts document, critique, and offer alternative visions on ecological crises such as the Niger-Delta oil pollution and the dumping of toxic wastes in African waters. The study challenges the anthropocentricism dominating African environmental literary scholarship and addresses a gap in mainstream ecocriticism which typically occludes Africa’s environmental problems. While African literary criticism often focuses on impacts of environmental problems on humans, my dissertation, in contrast, explores the entanglements of humans and nonhumans. The study contributes to globalizing ecocriticism, expands the bourgeoning corpus of ecological investigations in African literary criticism, and participates in efforts to foster interdisciplinary connections between the humanities and the sciences.     (Last update: 30 May 2021) ABSTRACTS 22 June Session 1: 09:00 – 10:00 Critique / Postcritique I Magnus Ullén, Stockholm University Historicizing Post-Critique: Reading in the Age of Surveillance Capitalism Lately, several critics have argued the importance of highlighting the affective dimension of reading, and have declared the existing paradigm of “critical reading” insufficient to that end. In its place, Stephen Best and Sharon Marcus have called for “surface reading”, Rita Felski for a neo-phenomenology informed by the actor-network theory of Bruno Latour, and Toril Moi for a mode of ordinary reading she traces to late Wittgenstein. A peculiar feature of these attempts at post-critical reading practices is that they seem much more adept at exposing the limits of existing forms of reading than with demonstrating the advantages of the alternative ways of reading they supposedly introduce. Felski, for instance, has written two books deploring the reading practices of “critique” without offering any readings of her own; Moi’s case for ordinary reading is equally void of productive readings of literary texts. These circumstances suggest the need for historicizing the calls for post-critical modes of reading. The present talk suggests that the medieval quadriga, which maps reading over four interconnected levels – literal (historical), allegorical, tropological (aesthetic), and anagogical (ideological) – may help us do so. It goes on to argue that post-critique is marked by a regression to the tropological aspect of the text, and that this circumstance suggests an unwillingness to confront the question of how our individual understanding of the text is interpellated, as it were, by the ideological machinery of the anagogical level, precisely at the moment when that interpellation has become so compelling as to make “free” reading virtually impossible.
