So whilst Ah was tendin’ you of nights Ah said Ah’d save de text for you.2 A few years short of the turn of the 19th century, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, an out- spoken leading figure in the early women’s rights movement, refused to attend a suffragists prayer meeting that was to begin with the singing of the hymn Guide Us, O Thou Great Jehovah. Her reasons for not attending, recounts Elisabeth Schüssler-Fiorenza in In Memory Of Her, was her conviction that the Biblical Jehovah had “never taken any active part in the suffrage movement”3 and that ecclesiastical teachings made Christian women falsely believe that any man had “ever [seen] or talked with God.”4 Her experience of the seeming indifference of a patriarchal Yahweh figure preached in church towards the rights of the op- pressed sparked her deep personal conviction that the Bible itself carried great political influence. -

Ettensohn, Ph.D., Brown University, May 2014. This project evaluates the twinned discourses of globalism and humanitarianism through an analysis of the body in the postcolonial novel. In offering celebratory accounts of the promises of globalization, recent movements in critical theory have privileged the cosmopolitan, transnational, and global over the postcolonial. Recognizing the potential pitfalls of globalism, these theorists have often turned to transnational fiction as supplying a corrective dose of humanitarian sentiment that guards a global affective community against the potential exploitations and excesses of neoliberalism. While authors such as Amitav Ghosh, Nuruddin Farah, and Rohinton Mistry have been read in a transnational, cosmopolitan framework––which they have often courted and constructed––I argue that their theorizations of the body contain a critical, postcolonial rejoinder to the liberal humanist tradition that they seek to critique from within. -

Abstract The main focus of this thesis is the manner in which Doris Lessing and J.M Coetzee construct their identities in their life writings. While Lessing has written a “classical” autobiography using the first person and past tense, Coetzee has opted for a more fictional version using the third person and the present tense. These different approaches offer us a unique opportunity to look into the manner in which fiction and facts can be combined and used to create works of art which linger permanently between the two. It is also interesting to see how these two writers have dealt with the complications of being raised in Southern Africa and how that influences their social and personal identities. In the Introduction I present the writers and their oeuvres briefly. In Chapter 1, I explain the terms connected with life writing, identity and narrative. In the second chapter I begin by looking into the manner in which their respective life writings begin and what repercussions does using the first and the third person have? In the third chapter I analyse their relational identities, i.e. -

Wisner reviews 99 books total, covering the biggest homegrown authors (Achebe, Coetzee, Ngugi), some notable foreigners (Kapuscinski, Chatwin, Bowles), and a host of lesser-knowns. The books were selected from hundreds of works of African literature that Wisner has read: how to whittle hundreds down to just 99 books to represent an entire continent? Wisner says reading widely was key, as was developing a “bullshit detector” for the “false” and “fraudulent” in African lit by living there and working with the legal defense of political prisoners in South Africa and Nambia. I’m Edwina Throsby. Barbara Kingsolver: The curtain has dropped and we can see what kind of peril we're in in terms of democracy and humanity. And artists are rallying. All of the award ceremonies and the artist gatherings that I've attended in the last year have been just celebrations of the power of art and vocal, rallying commitments to using the power of art. ET: How might literature change the world? American author Barbara Kingsolver has been asking this question through her best-selling novels and essays for years. After a self- described ‘curious childhood’ split between rural Appalachia and remote global locations where her doctor father was posted, she developed an independent spirit and an unshakeable love for the natural world. This passion manifested as activism during her biology degree, but despite becoming a scientist, it was literature than ultimately won out. Although she wrote several award-winning essays and novels through the late 90s and into the 2000s, it wasn’t until her novel The Poisonwood Bible was featured on Oprah Winfrey’s book club that Barbara skyrocketed to international fame. Barbara used her royalties to establish the Bellwether literary prize for socially engaged fiction, and she remains an activist at heart, with a body of work that is a testament to a belief in the power of the written word. -

The Freedom of Exile in Naipaul and Doris Lessinp ANDREW GURR A XXT THE END of the first "Free Women" section of The Golden Notebook Anna Wulf, the fictional author of the notebooks which form the basis for the whole novel, sits looking down on her material "as if she were a general on the top of a mountain, watching her armies deploy in the valley below."1 Anna as army commander is a sad irony, isolated as she is (a few lines earlier we were told "it was only alone, in the big room, that she was herself"), and fragmented to the very end as her fictions remain. This image of the self-deluding writer of fiction is worth unpack• ing. Its contents are the necessities of the writer of reflexive fic• tions and the writer as a free agent. The image's assumption of command, the writer as controller of fictions, is an irony which links the writing of The Golden Notebook precisely to the reflexive fictions of the last twenty years. Fiction has become the imposition of a subjective vision and the writer cannot be separated from the solipsistic fiction, ordering fantastic armies to do fantastic things which never exist outside the writer's head. The general also stands alone, above the fiction, in an isolation which is a form of exile from the battle he seeks to control. He has issued his orders. He expects to control events according to the pattern he dictates. He has the illusion that he is free to give his own shape to the events he rules over. -

Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant: Anne Tyler and the Faulkner Connection

Elkins Florida International University ABSTRACT The structure of Anne Tyler's novel, Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant is interestingly reminiscent of that of William Faulkner's As I Lay Dying; an investigation of the similarities reveals an underlying connection between the two works, a common concern with family dynamics and destinies. Both novelists examine the bonds between people, mysterious bonds beyond or beneath articulation. Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant is not, however, a pale imitation or a contemporary retelling of the Bundren novel. It is a participant in a tradition. The parallels between the two novels are suggestive rather than exact. Despite a certain sharing of Faulkner's fatalism, Tyler gives us characters a bit less passive and events a bit less inexorable. The echoes from Faulkner deepen and intensify the themes of Tyler, but in her novel, for one character at least, obsession ultimately gives way to perspective. The ending is not Faulknerian but Tyler's own; the optimism is limited but unmistakeable. Anne Tyler's latest novel, Dinner to the Home• also named Tull.2 A close look suggests that the sick Restaurant, begins with this sentence, similarities are not limited to names and surface "While Pearl Tull was dying, a funny thought appearances.
