Ettensohn, Ph.D., Brown University, May 2014. This project evaluates the twinned discourses of globalism and humanitarianism through an analysis of the body in the postcolonial novel. In offering celebratory accounts of the promises of globalization, recent movements in critical theory have privileged the cosmopolitan, transnational, and global over the postcolonial. Recognizing the potential pitfalls of globalism, these theorists have often turned to transnational fiction as supplying a corrective dose of humanitarian sentiment that guards a global affective community against the potential exploitations and excesses of neoliberalism. While authors such as Amitav Ghosh, Nuruddin Farah, and Rohinton Mistry have been read in a transnational, cosmopolitan framework––which they have often courted and constructed––I argue that their theorizations of the body contain a critical, postcolonial rejoinder to the liberal humanist tradition that they seek to critique from within. -

His works are often themed on rural life. Contrary to the case in Turkey, researches on rural life in China have advanced on a continuous basis since the 20s of the 20th century in China. This can be explained with the fact that primarily Mo Yan and Jia Pingwa, as prominent novelists in China, never stopped writing on villages, villagers and inner world of peasants that endeavoured to lead the life in the city as they did back in the village. In this brief research study, we try to discuss in what way Mo Yan touched on the pastoral literature in his works. China as dystopia: Cultural imaginings through translation Published in: Translation Studies (Taylor and Francis) doi: 10.1080/14781700.2015.1009937 Tong King Lee* School of Chinese, The University of Hong Kong *Email: [email protected] This article explores how China is represented in English translations of contemporary Chinese literature. It seeks to uncover the discourses at work in framing this literature for reception by an Anglophone readership, and to suggest how these discourses dovetail with meta-narratives on China circulating in the West. In addition to asking “what gets translated”, the article is interested in how Chinese authors and their works are positioned, marketed, and commodified in the West through the discursive material that surrounds a translated book. Drawing on English translations of works by Yan Lianke, Ma Jian, Chan Koonchung, Yu Hua, Su Tong, and Mo Yan, the article argues that literary translation is part of a wider programme of Anglophone textual practices that renders China an overdetermined sign pointing to a repressive, dystopic Other. The knowledge structures governing these textual practices circumscribe the ways in which China is imagined and articulated, thereby producing a discursive China. Wisner reviews 99 books total, covering the biggest homegrown authors (Achebe, Coetzee, Ngugi), some notable foreigners (Kapuscinski, Chatwin, Bowles), and a host of lesser-knowns. The books were selected from hundreds of works of African literature that Wisner has read: how to whittle hundreds down to just 99 books to represent an entire continent? Wisner says reading widely was key, as was developing a “bullshit detector” for the “false” and “fraudulent” in African lit by living there and working with the legal defense of political prisoners in South Africa and Nambia. Fürstenberg, Swiss citizen, Armenian origin, is a renowned international art curator and independent film producer. A pioneer in the field, she is known for broadening contemporary art and cinema to include a multicultural approach. Founder and the first Director of the Centre d’Art Contemporain of Geneva and Director of Le Magasin at the Centre National d’Art Contemporain of Grenoble, and its School of Curators awarded by the Jury of the Biennale of Venice in 1993. In 1995 she founded ART for The World – an NGO associated to UNDPI (the UN Department of Public Information) and partner of SESC Regional Direction Sao Paulo, Brazil. The NGO was created in the context of the 50th anniversary of the UN and the art exhibition Dialogues of Peace. Its goals are the dissemination of projects and links between contemporary culture and Human Rights. Obviously, I am not to blame for what is going on, but the more I think about it, the more I would be betraying these people if I walked away. The only thing to do is to take this to the bitter end, so that no one can say that when things became difficult, I ran away.” Anna Politkovskaya Rama Yade, French Minister of State responsible for Foreign Affairs and Human Rights Executive Summary The inter-institutional initiative launched by the European Commission, the European Parliament and the United Nations to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) reaffirmed and illustrated its recognised universality and transcendence. Divided into two panels, one focussing on the instruments for the protection of Human Rights and the other on the right to freedom of expression, the conference highlighted the singular admiration for all those working for other's rights. Tuesday 7 October Opening Speeches Mr Jacques Barrot, Vice-President of the European Commission, opened the conference by underlying the importance of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the 10th anniversary of the Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) Declaration as cornerstones of the defence of human rights worldwide. He recalled that the EU has aligned itself with the protection of those defending human rights through the approval of the EU Guidelines on HRDs.
