Murakami Favorite for the Nobel Prize in Literature Murakami favorite for the Nobel Prize in Literature Speculation about who will the Nobel Prize in Literature this year is already in full swing. According to the international betting company Unibet’s odds the Japanese writer Haruki Murakami is currently favorite to win the prestigious award with the odds of 11/2 at Unibet. Second favorite, American writer Joyce Carol Oates can be backed at odds of 7/1. For the ninth year in a row, you can bet with Unibet on who you think will be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. Unibet got it right last year as they installed last year’s winners Mo Yan as the favorite to take the prize. This year, it looks like Haruki Murakami will collect the coveted honor. The hugely popular Japanese author has been amongst the favorites to take The Nobel Prize over the past few years and is widely tipped to finally win in October - In 2012 our customers were split between Murakami and Mo Yan. I think it may be different this year Mr. Murakami has received a number of literary awards in recent years and for the past few years has been amongst the favorites to take the Nobel Prize. While the bulk of my discussion will focus on the cycle of mythic American innocence, I will pay fair attention to the sub-myths which likewise play vital roles in composing the broad myth of American innocence in relation to understanding American identities – specifically, the myth of the Virgin West (or America-as-Eden), the yeoman farmer and individualism. When discussing the foundation of cultural American mythologies, I draw specifically from the traditional myth-symbol writers in American Studies. Those works which I reference are: Henry Nash Smith’s, Virgin Land: The American West as Symbol and Myth, Leo Marx’s, The Machine in the Garden: Technology and the Pastoral Ideal in America and R.W.B. Lewis’s, The American Adam: Innocence, Tragedy, and Tradition in the Nineteenth Century. I focus much of my discussion on the applicability of the myth of innocence, rather than the validity of the actual myth throughout history. In this sense, I follow the myth as a cycle of innocence lost and regained in American culture – as an ideal which can never truly reach its conclusion for as long as America is invested in two broad definitions of innocence: the American Adam and the Noble Savage.

Rao) Twenty out of twenty-six of Andrea Camilleri’s detective Montalbano novels feature three motifs related to the mafia. First, although the mafia is not necessarily the main subject of the narratives, mafioso behavior and communication are present in all novels through both mafia and non-mafia-affiliated characters and dialogue. Second, within the narratives there is a distinction between the old and the new generations of the mafia, and a preference for the old mafia ways. Last, the mafia is illustrated as the usual suspect in everyday crime, consequentially diverting attention and accountability away from government authorities. Few critics have focused on Camilleri’s representations of the mafia and their literary significance in mafia and detective fiction. The purpose of the present study is to cast light on these three motifs through a close reading and analysis of the detective Montalbano novels, lending a new twist to the genre of detective fiction.

Primo paradosso: un mondo sempre più virtualizzato e globale sembrerebbe avere attenuato o addirittura abolito il concetto di separatezza, sostituito da quello di un gigantesco mercato, che consuma ovunque i medesimi prodotti. Eppure i confini cancellati dai mercati ritornano drammaticamente sia nella crescente divaricazione tra Paesi ricchi e Paesi poveri, sia nell’affermazione di esasperate identità locali, opposte le une e altre, che si risolvono in tensioni, conflitti, guerre di tutti contro tutti. Ha anche creato la serie del commissario Salvo Montalbano, e altri romanzi polizieschi, romanzi e racconti e film sono tutti ambientati in Sicilia. L'ambiente siciliano ha trasformato il destino di queste storie in giro per il mondo, tanto che alcuni critici hanno parlato del vero "caso Camilleri"1. Camilleri è considerato lo scrittore italiano più letto al mondo, con circa 20 milioni di libri venduti nel mondo e tradotti in più lingue2 per non parlare del successo degli adattamenti televisivi. Ettensohn, Ph.D., Brown University, May 2014. This project evaluates the twinned discourses of globalism and humanitarianism through an analysis of the body in the postcolonial novel. In offering celebratory accounts of the promises of globalization, recent movements in critical theory have privileged the cosmopolitan, transnational, and global over the postcolonial. Recognizing the potential pitfalls of globalism, these theorists have often turned to transnational fiction as supplying a corrective dose of humanitarian sentiment that guards a global affective community against the potential exploitations and excesses of neoliberalism. While authors such as Amitav Ghosh, Nuruddin Farah, and Rohinton Mistry have been read in a transnational, cosmopolitan framework––which they have often courted and constructed––I argue that their theorizations of the body contain a critical, postcolonial rejoinder to the liberal humanist tradition that they seek to critique from within.
