Naipaul: A Selective Bibliography with Annotations: 195J-198J, covering the period 1987-94. Since 1 g87 (when An Enigma of Arrival: A Novel in Five Sections appeared), Naipaul has published three books—A Turn in the South ( 1989), India: A Million Mutinies Now ( 1990), and A Way in the World ( 1994)—and more than 18 substantial pieces, in addition to delivering various lectures and acceptance speeches. This checklist is arranged in six parts. Part I contains Naipaul's most recent writings and comments, listed under three head• ings: published books, articles, and interviews, with entries given chronologically. Part II covers recent bibliographical listings of his work. Part III includes 16 full-length books written about him. Part PV lists articles on him in books, reference volumes, journals, and magazines. Part V has book reviews and critical studies of his individual books. And Part VI itemizes doctoral theses exclu• sively or partly on him. Conference papers have featured prominently in the spate of attention Naipaul continues to generate; these papers are usu• ally quite elusive to trace, particularly if they are not published collectively and within a reasonably short time frame. Thus this checklist omits offerings on Naipaul from conferences and all foreign-language citations. It also excludes newspaper articles with imprints prior to 1987. Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon) [email protected] 113 Peter Childs’s expertise in contemporary British and postcolonial literature is extensive and admirable, as demonstrated by the numerous books he has written or edited since 1996. He is the author of monographs on Paul Scott, Ian McEwan and E.M. Forster, and has written on modernism, contemporary British culture and literature, as well as postcolonial theory. His engaging and insightful book on Contemporary Novelists: British Fiction 1970-2003 (2004) explored the work of twelve major British writers, including Martin Amis, Kazuo Ishiguro, Hanif Kureishi, Ian McEwan, Salman Rushdie, Zadie Smith, Graham Swift, Jeanette Winterson, and Julian Barnes. In 2009, he contributed to the special issue on Julian Barnes for the journal American, British and Canadian Studies with a paper on Barnes’s complex relation to belief, mortality and religion. In 2011, Childs co-edited with Sebastian Groes a collection of essays entitled Julian Barnes: Contemporary Critical Perspectives, and authored this monograph in the series on Contemporary British Novelists of Manchester University Press. In the acknowledgements, Childs kindly thanks previous critics of Barnes’s work for pointing directions for discussions in his study, among whom Merritt Moseley, author of Understanding Julian Barnes (1997), Vanessa Guignery, author of The Fiction of Julian Barnes (2006) and co-editor with Ryan Roberts of Conversations with Julian Barnes (2009), as well as Mathew Pateman for his monograph entitled Julian Barnes (2002) and Frederick M. The discourse of human dignity misrepresents the meaning of empowerment for modern citizens, making them interested more in political gestures and less in profit, comfort and protection from abuse. Dignity‘s epistemes— self-assertion, recognition, political action, public-spiritedness, responsibility, resistance, the denial of animal instinct, sacrifice—should not be human ideals, for they are exactly the opposite of the sovereign‘s characteristics and because they are responsible for recursive violence that preserves the status quo. -

ABSTRACT “The Waters Return”: Myth and Mystery in Graham Swift’s Waterland Laura Schrock, M.A. Director: Dr. Richard R. Russell, Ph.D. The following chapter will engage Waterland in isolation from Swift’s other novels and collection of short stories, not because these texts do not mutually illuminate one another, but because Waterland deserves a treatment of the kind of depth that warrants an extended, concentrated study. That chapter seeks specifically to counter several of the blatant misreadings of the narrator’s posture and intent within the novel, and to adequately evaluate that posture and intent as they emerge within the full context of the wealth of literary devices Swift employs, including irony, mythical imagery, and scriptural allusion. PEN PEN Joins ABR ince the beginning of 2003, nine writers and journalists have been murdered worldwide, adding to International SPEN’s list of 400 who have been killed over the last ten years. In the same period, 769 other writers and journal- ists have been imprisoned, tortured, attacked, threatened, harassed and deported, or have disappeared, gone into hiding or fled in fear of their lives — simply for practising their profession. International PEN is a worldwide organisation of writers, consisting of 130 centres in ninety-one countries. PEN was founded in 1921 to promote friendship and cooperation among writers everywhere, regardless of their political positions. It fights for freedom of expression and opposes political censorship. Above all, it vigorously defends those writers who suffer under oppressive régimes. Over the years, PEN’s members have included eminent writers around the world, including Joseph Conrad, George Bernard Shaw, H.G. Wells, Thomas Mann, Nadine Gordimer, Arthur Miller, Margaret Atwood, Thomas Keneally and David Malouf. The Peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa has declared: ‘In times of division between countries, PEN is one of the rare institutions to keep a bridge constantly open.’ In 1960 PEN established a Writers in Prison Committee to campaign on behalf of persecuted writers worldwide. The Committee currently monitors the cases of more than 1000 writers each year, lobbying governments to secure their re- lease. The Committee maintains contact with imprisoned writ- ers and their families, while also working through the UN to draw attention both to individual cases and to human rights abuses in specific countries. This year so far, twenty-eight writers have been released. -

Situating itself in the developing field of memory studies, this thesis is an attempt to go beyond the prolonged horizon of disturbing recollection that is commonly regarded as part of contemporary postcolonial and diasporic experience. it appears that, in the contemporary world the geographical mapping and remapping and its associated sense of dislocation and the crisis of identity have become an integral part of an everyday life of not only the post-colonial subjects, but also the post-apartheid ones. This inter-correlation between memory, identity, and displacement as an effect of colonization and migration lays conceptual background for my study of memory in the literary works of an contemporary writers, a Japanese-born British writer, Kazuo Ishiguro. This study is a scrutiny of some key issues in memory studies: the working of remembrance and forgetting, the materialization of memory, and the belongingness of material memory and personal identity. May 2020 Dear Student, You are enrolled in Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition for the coming school year. Bowling Green High School has offered this course since 1983. I thought that I would tell you a little bit about the course and what will be expected of you. Please share this letter with your parents or guardians. A.P. Literature and Composition is a year-long class that is taught on a college freshman level. This means that we will read college level texts—often from college anthologies—and we will deal with other materials generally taught in college. You should be advised that some of these texts are sophisticated and contain mature themes and/or advanced levels of difficulty. In this class we will concentrate on refining reading, writing, and critical analysis skills, as well as personal reactions to literature. A.P. Literature is not a survey course or a history of literature course so instead of studying English and world literature chronologically, we will be studying a mix of classic and contemporary pieces of fiction from all eras and from diverse cultures. This gives us an opportunity to develop more than a superficial understanding of literary works and their ideas. Writing is at the heart of this A.P. course, so you will write often in journals, in both personal and researched essays, and in creative responses. You will need to revise your writing. I have found that even good students—like you—need to refine, mature, and improve their writing skills. You will have to work diligently at revising major essays. -

Hamish Matthews Considering the responsibility of the novelist in South Africa involves questions deeply embedded in the country's troubled history. The spectre of apartheid casts an unavoidable shadow over writers from white privileged society despite the breakdown of the political system of apartheid. With regard to the problem of the author's position Gallagher queries, ”how one can write for œ in support of œ the ”Other‘ without presuming to write for œ assuming power over œ the Other.‘ 1 The ”Other‘ is a term used to refer to the black majority, in that they had been so suppressed by apartheid, that their sudden integration into South African culture did not erase the ingrained difference projected during apartheid between the ”us‘ and ”them‘ of whites and blacks. There are two extremes in which the racist hierarchy can live on through art. In speaking for the ”Other‘ there is a risk of a continuing form of linguistic colonialism. At the other end of the scale is the counter-fear of an outright refusal to deal with the ”Other‘, accepting unbridgeable differences, straying toward recreating the rhetoric that formed apartheid. It is between these two fears that Coetzee and Gordimer carefully tread. Coetzee leans strongly towards the impossibility of representation, pushing language to its limit to expose the limitations of current literary conditions.
