Geographical sampling bias and restricted search methodologies have resulted in the distribution of Paraguayan reptiles and amphibians being patchily known. Available data is almost entirely based on brief collecting trips and rapid ecological inventories, often several decades apart, which inevitably struggle to detect more inconspicuous species and patterns of abundance. This has led to a deficit in our knowledge of the true distribution and abun- dance of Paraguayan reptiles and amphibians. The establishment of the NGO Para La Tierra at Reserva Natural Laguna Blanca (RNLB), Depto. San Pedro, Paraguay allowed the first modern sustained, multi-method inventory of Paraguayan reptiles and amphibians to be performed at a single site. Despite the small size of the reserve (804 ha), a total of 57 reptiles (12 of national conservation concern) and 32 amphibians (one of national conserva- tion concern) were collected during five years of random sampling, qualifying RNLB as the most biodiverse re- serve for reptiles and amphibians in the country. Six species occurring at RNLB have been found at no other Para- guayan locality. Legal protection for this private reserve expired in January 2015 and the conservation implica- tions of the inventory results are discussed. It is proposed that the long term legal protection of the reserve be con- sidered a national conservation priority and that the diversity of the herpetofauna be recognized with the designa- tion of RNLB as Paraguay’s first Important Area for the Conservation of Amphibians and Reptiles. -

Email: [email protected] Abstract. Reflecting their exceptional radiation, snakes occur in different habitats and microhabitats and are able to eat numerous types of prey. The availability of good and comprehensive phylogenies for different snake’s lineages together with natural history data provides an opportunity to explore how ecological traits diversified during their radiation. In the present study, we describe the diet and microhabitat variation (arboreal or non-arboreal) in the tribe Pseudoboini and explore how these traits evolved during the tribe’s diversification. We analyzed specimens deposited in scientific collections and gathered information on diet and microhabitat use available in the literature and provided by other researchers. We also mapped diet and microhabitat data onto a phylogeny of the tribe using the principle of parsimony. Pseudoboine snakes feed mainly on lizards and small mammals, and of the 22 species for which a minimum number of prey records was obtained, nine are diet generalists, six are lizard specialists, three are small mammal specialists, two are snake specialists, one is a lizard egg specialist, and one is a bird egg specialist. The highly diverse feeding habits of pseudoboines seem to have evolved mainly in the terminal taxa. -

DE ALENCAR 1 MARCIO MARTINS ABSTRACT Even though natural history information is crucial for answering key ecological, evolutionary, and conservation questions, basic studies are still lacking for Neotropical snakes. This study aims at contributing to the knowledge of the Neotropical tribe Pseudoboini, based on literature data, analysis of museum specimens and unpublished data. The tribe is mainly composed of moderate-sized snakes, although small and large-sized snakes also occur in the clade. Mean fecundity ranged from two (Rodriguesophis iglesiasi) to 29 eggs (Clelia plumbea) and the species are predominantly terrestrial and nocturnal. Most species are diet specialists and lizards are the most commonly consumed prey (found in the diet of 29 species), followed by small mam- mals (consumed by 20 species) and snakes (consumed by 18 species). Although the tribe Pseudo- boini appears to be well studied, for 15 species (32%) only a small amount of information or none was available. We hope that our study can motivate research on the least known species. Key-Words: Ecology; Diet; Microhabitat; Reproduction; Dipsadidae. E-mail: Abstract: The present study reports new records of the Dipsadid snake Rhachidelus brazili Boulenger, 1908, from Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul states, Brazil. Our data extend the known geographical distribution ca. 713 km to the northwest and constitute the first record in the Upper Paraguay sub-basin. The Dipsadid snake Rhachidelus brazili Boulenger, – Cuiabá, Mato Grosso (15°35’ S, 56°05’ W) UFMT-R 1908 belongs to a monotypic genus of the Pseudoboini 5465; 2 – Vale de São Domingos, Mato Grosso (14°57’ tribe (Peters and Orejas-Miranda 1986; Zaher 1999). -
