FEBRUARY 16-26 PDX FESTIVAL 2017 WELCOME TO THE 2017 PDX JAZZ FESTIVAL

For more than a decade, the city of Portland has transformed into Jazzlandia with the arrival of the annual PDX Jazz Festival every February. Co-founded in 2003 by Travel Portland as a cultural tourism initiative in celebration of Black History Month, the 2017 Biamp PDX Jazz Festival promises to be energizing, magnetic, serious, and fun. With upwards of 100 performances over the course of 11 days, the festival is expansive and exploratory while also recognizing the icons that came before us. Jazz will be spoken here, in the city of Jazzlandia – Where Jazz Lives.

Festival Preview Experience the many facets of the Festival: International Jazz artists on stage at the Newmark and Winningstad Theatre, Revolution Hall, intimate solo piano performances at Classic Pianos and a run of Dizzy Gillespie inspired performances at Al's Den below McMenamins Crystal Hotel.

Heath Brothers PDX Jazz in the Community Jazz is an indigenous American art form. The Jazz iconoclasts John Berks “Dizzy” Gillespie, Thelonious "Sphere" Monk and Bernard "Buddy" Rich had imposing personalities to match their innovative muse. This year we celebrate their collective and indomitable musical spirit from Thelonius Monk many vantage points.

The 2017 Biamp Festival features a big band world premiere with Portland Jazz icon Mel Brown along with Gillespie protégé Jon Faddis. Monk’s son, T.S. Monk, is paired with the production John Beasley Presents Buddy Rich MONK’estra and John Santos and Alex Conde join up for a Latin sojourn titled Descarga Monk. Enjoy Alan Jones recasting the storied Gretsch drum battles with classic Buddy Rich re-arrangements featuring Carlton Jackson along with Mel and Christopher Brown. Celebrate Dizzy Gillespie a century of innovation as we look back and move forward.
