    Special CWIHP Research Report The Victims at the Berlin Wall, 1961-1989 By Hans-Hermann Hertle/Maria Nooke August 2011 Forty-four years after the Berlin Wall was built and 15 years after the East German archives were opened, reliable data on the number of people killed at the Wall were still lacking. Depending on the sources, purpose, and date of the studies, the figures varied between 78 (Central Registry of State Judicial Administrations in Salzgitter), 86 (Berlin Public Prosecution Service), 92 (Berlin Police President), 122 (Central Investigation Office for Government and Unification Criminality), and more than 200 deaths (Working Group 13 August). The names of many of the victims, their biographies and the circumstances in which they died were widely unknown.1 This special CWIHP report summarizes the findings of a research project by the Center for Research on Contemporary History Potsdam and the Berlin Wall Memorial Site and Documentation Center which sought to establish the number and identities of the individuals who died at the Berlin Wall between 1961 and 1989 and to document their lives and deaths through historical and biographical research.2 Definition In order to provide reliable figures, the project had to begin by developing clear criteria and a definition of what individuals are to be considered victims at the Berlin Wall. We regard the “provable causal and spatial connection of a death with an attempted escape or a direct or indirect cause or lack of action by the ‘border organs’ in the border territory” as the critical factor. In simpler terms: the criteria are either an attempted escape or a temporal and spatial link between the death and the border regime.

By the mid-1990s, however, east Germans began to see their old state differently, bringing back their Ampelmann as a reminder of the safety, security, and equality their old state possessed. Following his resurrection, Ampelmann transformed into a pop-culture icon as shops sprung up selling Ampelmann-branded products. From here, his popularity spread as Ampelmann lights appeared in western Germany and Ampelmann shops opened their doors not only in Berlin, but also in Tokyo and Seoul. East Germans supported this, declaring that his popularity showed that their past and its values could find a place in a globalizing world. In doing so, East Germans have used and rewritten their past to promote a more respectful and equitable alternative to modern life. 2 Introduction: Traffic lights were probably the last thing on the minds of East Germans on 9 November 1989 as the Berlin Wall fell and the borders of their German Democratic Republic (GDR) opened.

Johnson Professor Carl Niekerk Associate Professor Yasemin Yildiz Abstract Scholars emphasize concepts of trauma and loss to describe literary responses to the collapse of socialism in 1989. In contrast, focusing on literary representations of family, this project reveals productive coping mechanisms developed in German literature after 1989. In artistic representation, family marks the site where the GDR’s dissolution and new post-1989 beginnings are negotiated. I draw on the concepts of agency, memory, and space to show how the historical transformation in 1989 affected existing family structures and how narrative family representations negotiate the historical meaning of 1989. Mal. 40 Jahre später, im November 1989, leitete der Fall der Mauer das Ende der deutschen Teilung ein. Die Vermittlung dieser doppelten deutschen Geschichte der Nachkriegszeit bildet eine zentrale Aufgabe historischer und politischer Bildung. Das LWL-Medienzentrum für Westfalen hält zum Thema „DDR und deutsch-deutsches Verhältnis“ eine Reihe von Medien vor, die erstmalig in dieser Form zusammengestellt wurden und besonders für den Einsatz in der Bildungsarbeit geeignet sind. Die Medienübersicht des ersten Teils gliedert sich in neun thematische Kapitel; im zweiten Teil finden Sie dann eine ausführliche Beschreibung der Medien in alphabetischer Reihenfolge, unterteilt nach Dokumentationen sowie Spiel- und Fernsehfilmen. Die aufgeführten Titel können im LWL-Medienzentrum für Westfalen und in den meisten anderen kommunalen Medienzentren in Westfalen-Lippe von Schulen und Bildungseinrichtungen kostenfrei entliehen werden.     Potsdam/Berlin Juli 2011 Hans-Hermann Hertle/Maria Nooke Die Todesopfer an der Berliner Mauer 1961-1989 Ergebnisse eines Forschungsprojektes des Zentrums für Zeithistorische Forschung Potsdam und der Stiftung Berliner Mauer Ausgangssituation und Zielsetzung Selbst 44 Jahre nach dem Mauerbau und 15 Jahre nach der Öffnung der DDR-Archive existierten keine gesicherten Angaben über die Anzahl der Todesopfer an der Berliner Mauer.1 Je nach Grundlage, Zweck und Zeitpunkt der Erfassung bewegten sich die Zahlenangaben zwischen 78 (Zentrale Erfassungsstelle der Landesjustizverwaltungen in Salzgitter), 86 (Staatsanwaltschaft Berlin), 92 (Der Polizeipräsident in Berlin), 122 (Zentrale Ermittlungsstelle für Regierungs- und Vereinigungskriminalität) und mehr als 200 Toten (Arbeitsgemeinschaft 13. August). Die Namen vieler Todesopfer, ihre Biographien und die Um- stände, unter denen sie ums Leben kamen, waren weitgehend unbekannt.2 Die doppelte Zielsetzung eines im Jahr 2005 begonnenen gemeinsamen Projektes des Zentrums für Zeithistorische Forschung und der Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer bestand darin, Anzahl und Identität der Todesopfer an der Berliner Mauer zu ermitteln und die Lebensgeschichten und Todesumstände der Men- schen, die zwischen 1961 und 1989 an der Berliner Mauer ums Leben kamen, biographiegeschichtlich zu erforschen und zu dokumentieren. Definition „Todesopfer an der Berliner Mauer“ Zu Beginn des Projektes wurden als Voraussetzung für eine überprüfbare Bilanz nachvollziehbare Krite- rien und eine Definition entwickelt, wer als Todesopfer an der Berliner Mauer zu verstehen ist. Als ent- scheidend betrachten wir die „nachweisbare kausale und räumliche Verbindung eines Todesfalles mit einer Fluchtaktion oder einem direkten oder mittelbaren Verursachen bzw. Unterlassen durch die ‚Grenz- organe’ am Handlungsort Grenzgebiet“. Einfacher gesagt: Als Kriterien müssen entweder ein Fluchthin- tergrund oder aber ein zeitlicher und räumlicher Zusammenhang des Todes mit dem Grenzregime gege- ben sein.

Abstract Nostalgia has become a much-discussed phenomenon in recent times. Whether it be its prevalence in popular culture mediums such as film or music, or its effects on political and social developments in Western societies, nostalgia is seemingly present in most aspects of everyday life. Does this, therefore, relate to modern-day German society? This thesis will examine a specific type of nostalgia associated with the ‘old’ Federal Republic, the democratic country founded after the Second World War that ultimately changed once its political institutions extended eastwards. Otherwise known as, Westalgie, the concept can be considered a general term indicating nostalgia for features of everyday life in the FRG such as economic stability under Rhenish capitalism, political reticence in terms of foreign policy, and compounded with symbols of West German accomplishment such as the Deutschmark or the Volkswagen Beetle. This thesis will seek to explain how such a phenomenon has occurred in recent times, while also examining its impact on certain issues in the Federal Republic of Germany.
