LETTER OF THE WEEK PICTURE OF THE WEEK The trials of being a Catholic and a politician

I THINK it is outrageous that a politician who claims to be Catholic, and has depended heavily on religious voters, takes a position on the front page of Scotland’s national Catholic newspaper that his views on abortion differ from those of his Church. It is not only Catholics who will find fault with this pro-abortion stance either. New Scottish Labour Jim Murphy needs to get his house in order. As a Labour politician, he won’t take a pro-life stance for fear of losing votes, yet he is adamantly against assisted suicide (SCO January 9). Why, these are two sides of the same coin. He also takes his party line against devolving control of abortion, no doubt in fear of more humane control. And don’t even get me started on how ironic it is that our elected officials are protected by a conscience clause when voting on such matters but Catholic midwives Mary Doogan and Connie Wood are not. To everyone who said the midwives choose their careers and must get on with it, would you say that to our MPs and MSPs too. If so then our society has become even more secular, and intolerant, than I had feared. Mr Murphy may be dominating the headlines in Scotland at the moment but his new, New Labour push for a fresh start for Labour with Scottish voters Friends from parishes throughout Motherwell Diocese join Bishop Joseph Toal and brother priests after the Memorial Mass for Fr Michael Cunnane in Holy Family Church Mossend. Our weekly series on Children’s Liturgy has lesson plans and activity suggestions for use with young people who are on the path to Christ Each week, Catechists will find readings and Psalm responses, complemented by prayer, reflection, FAITH discussion questions, and activities. Please feel free to use them as you wish The lessons are created by Adorer-theologians using the lens of the spirituality of St Maria de Mattias, which also embraces precious blood spirituality FIRST While this is the starting point for the lessons, readers are invited to approach them however the spirit moves you The Church is concerned with the availability and understanding of scripture for children who have their rightful place in the Church. In light of this SCO aims to provide a useful tool in drawing children closer to KIDS the Catholic Faith
