    LESSON PLAN GONE TO TEXAS: THE STORY OF THE TEXAS EMPRESARIOS Social Studies, Grade 7 OBJECTIVE Using educational films from the 1960s and 1980s, students will examine the varied experiences of the nineteenth century Texas Empresarios, and identify the important contributions of significant individuals, including Moses Austin, Stephen F. Austin, Baron de Bastrop, Martín de León, and Green DeWitt. This film is a valuable resource that was saved through the Texas Archive of the Moving Image’s digital preservation program. The film educates and entertains, containing extraordinary reenactments of specific events that occurred in early Texas. This lesson highlights the Mexican settlement and colonization of Texas and traces the events that led up to the Texas Revolution, such as the 1825 Colonization Law of Coahuila y Tejas and its reversal in 1830, the Fredonian Rebellion, and the politically divisive land dispute between Texas Empresarios Martín de León and Green DeWitt. Most of the lesson focuses on Moses Austin and his son, Stephen F. Austin, as they worked to bring the first colonists or “The Old Three Hundred” to Texas. This lesson, utilizing a unique and engaging educational film created by the Texas Education Agency in 1978, serves as a great introduction to the Texas Empresarios and nicely segues into the Texas Revolutionary period. By 1846, Anglo-American immigrants had transformed the demographics, culture, and governance of Texas. Nowhere is this better exemplified than in Nacogdoches, Texas’ oldest city. The influx of Anglo-Americans into Texas and the accompanying regime changes transformed the Tejano border town into an Anglo-dominated city, prompting struggles over civil rights, economic power, and political authority between Mexican- and Anglo-Texans both as individuals and as ethnic communities. Several violent insurrections pitted Nacogdochians against Anglo and Mexican outsiders as well as each other, culminating in the largest organized revolt against the Republic of Texas by its own citizens: the ultimately doomed Córdova Rebellion of 1838 and 1839. Yet this was the last gasp of Tejano resistance to the Anglicization of East Texas. By 1846, Anglo numerical superiority and American annexation forced Nacogdoches’ Tejanos to accept an Anglo- dominated social hierarchy in order to preserve their rights, property, and community.

    The Utopian Colony of La Réunion as Social Mirror of Frontier Texas and Icon of Modern Dallas1 Donald J. Kagay Albany State University The direct bond between Europe and the United States in the first decades of the nineteenth century produced immigrant communities of all sorts within an American setting.2 Though accommodating rapidly to the social and political ideals of their new country, European settlements could not easily forget their violent and often revolutionary pasts. Nowhere in nineteenth-century America was this rivalry between imported ideas and indigenous conditions more pronounced than in the religious, communist, and socialist colonies that sprouted from New Jersey to Texas in the years immediately before the Civil War. The most significant of these religious settlements were New Lebanon (Pennsylvania), Oneida (New York), Salt Lake City (Utah), and Zoar (Ohio). The principal secular communities of a communal nature were Brook Farm (Massachusetts), Nauvoo and New Harmony (Indiana) as well as the North American Phalanx (New Jersey).3 To understand how one group of French, Belgian, Swiss, and Alsatian immigrants, who were often branded as radical by American standards of the time, found a home in the nativist confines of Texas, this paper will focus on the utopian colony of La Réunion that scratched out a meager existence in Dallas from 1855 to 1858, but helped to shape the burgeoning frontier town for decades thereafter. Given the checkered fate of contemporaneous socialist ventures across the United States,4 the failure of the “Old French Colony”–as La Réunion is still called in Dallas circles–was hardly a surprise.

    Understanding the importance of land in the history of Texas is essential to understanding Texas. Few Texans, however, are aware of the role that public land has played in our state's development. Land has not only furnished us valuable natural resources, it has been used to finance government operations, reward veterans, provide internal improvements and fund public education. The land myth in Texas is real. The information included here traces the disposition, use and settlement of public land in Texas. Initially conceived to supplement and enhance the story of public lands outlined in Texas school textbooks, the content has been modified to appeal to a broad audience while retaining its original instructional intent. A glossary and bibliography of suggested readings are also included at the bottom of this document. Teachers may find the appendix, "Empresarios, Commissioners and Settlers: The Process of Land Distribution in Mexican Texas," particularly suited to their needs. The Spanish Period Spain claimed the land that is now Texas in 1519, when the explorer Alonzo Alvarez de Piñeda sailed along the Gulf Coast to the Rio Grande. Later, in hopes of finding mineral riches, other Spanish explorers came to Texas. But because they didn't find the quick wealth they sought, Spain ignored Texas until 1685, when France's René Robert Cavelier, Sieur de la Salle, established a fort at Matagorda Bay and claimed the area for France. To protect its claim, Spain needed to establish a presence in Texas, but with plenty of land at home Spanish subjects in Mexico were unwilling to move to this faraway, dangerous land.
