Abstract The citizen platform Barcelona en Comú (BComú) started in 2014 as a response to the Spanish economic crisis and the anti-austerity policies from traditional political parties. The organization –which currently governs the Municipality of Barcelona– emerged in the Spanish political sphere with the concept of feminizing politics: a term understood not only as gender equality in institutions but also an open door that goes beyond politics-as-usual. It means inserting empathy into the core of political action (e.g., collaboration, dialogue, horizontality, etc.), questioning traditional understandings of strong leadership, learning how to distribute municipal power and services throughout society, and decentering the role of institutions towards a collective self-governance. Drawing on the theoretical framework of ecofeminism this research analyzes and contributes to the interpretation of feminizing politics by members of BComú and those academics who are closest to the organization, and shows how members are including the concept into daily practices at work.

Let me draw your attention in particular to a new feature of the program that we intend to pursue in the future: the “Tertulia” or public discussion/debate that the executive committee has organized this year on the topic of “The history of education and the rise of new populisms.” This has been a busy year for ISCHE, as our website can attest. We launched the ISCHE history of education salon initiative whe- re leading scholars speak about “education and the body”, pursuing conversations begun in Chicago last August 2016. I hope all of you have taken the time to listen to this polyglot conversation, and I encourage you to respond with your own thoughts. Amongst the other new initiatives, we were able partially to support nine young scholars to attend the conference through the Early Career Scholar Travel Fund. And finally, I want to congratulate the winner of 2017 ISCHE’s First Book Award: Damiano Ma- tasci for his book L’école républicaine et l’étranger.

Salgado) In this dissertation I discuss the ways in which socially conscious playwrights in early -twentieth century Argentina used and adapted theatre genres to advance women’s rights and project the feminist imagination. I also anal yze how theatre critics and spectators reacted to these early feminist spectacles. In Chapter 1, I provide an overview of the repression of women that was dictated by the Argentine Civil Code and the efforts of feminist activists to make reforms. I also de scribe how various playwrights (Salvadora Medina Onrubia, José González Castillo, César Iglesias Paz, Alfonsina Storni, and Malena Sándor) used the genre of thesis drama to support social and legislative progress from 1914 to 1937. I explain , in Chapter 2, how marginalized female playwrights (Lola Pita Martínez, Alcira Olivé, Carolina Alió, Salvadora Medina Onrubia and Alfonsina Storni) cultivated the unique strategy of “feminist melodrama,” which allowed them to endorse feminism from within an accepted “fe minine” genre.
