WM WAMBROOK 1911 Census.Cwk (WP) PARISH OF WAMBROOK 1911 CENSUS The census was carried out on the night of Sunday April 2nd, 1911 and followed the format of the previous censuses taken since 1871. The head of the household still had to be defined as did the relationship to the head of each person staying in the house that night. The gender of each person was also recorded. Accurate ages were required throughout and were taken from the person’s last birthday. For infants under one year, the age was recorded either in months (m), weeks (w) or days (d). “Where Born” had to be completed by giving the county and town or parish of birth. The expanded list of infirmities introduced in 1871 was retained, but has been blanked out on the copies of the census now available in the public domain. The number of rooms occupied by each household had to be recorded. The Occupational Status of each person (if applicable) had to be shown as Employer (Er), Worker (W) or Own Account (OA). Also people working at Home (H) had to be recorded. New features introduced for 1911 were a requirement to record the postal address of the dwelling. Also, married women, whose husbands were still living, had to record the length of the marriage in years , the number of children born to the marriage and the number still living when the census was completed. It should be remembered that in 1896 county boundary changes resulted in the transfer of Wambrook from Dorset to Somerset and Chardstock from Dorset to Devon. An analysis of the recordings for Wambrook is tabled below, together with comparisons, for each census since 1841. When extracting information from this transcript, the following points should be noted: The 1911 census was the first to be completed by the head of the household, rather than the Enumerator. Consequently there was a greater lack of consistency with some people being recorded with the Christian name by which they were known, rather than the name by which they were baptised. The Occupational Status of each person (if applicable) had to be shown as Employer (Er), Worker (W) or Own Account (OA). There was clearly considerable confusion about when and how this notation was to be used with many cases of information either being incorrect or missing. Also there was a general lack of understanding regarding the term “working at Home (H) “. In many cases the entry has been endorsed or altered by the Enumerator. “Notes” have been added to correct any obvious errors. The information required of married women was sometimes completed by widows, and occasionally by widowers. This was crossed out by the Enumerator, but has been included in this transcript, as it is information useful to researchers. Shortening of forenames has been avoided wherever possible with full names being given in the transcription. Also, full stops have not been used in names, thus Wm. C. Larcombe in the census return appears as William C Larcombe. By the same logic the town or Parish of birth is given in full, whenever possible. In the transcription the column headed “Mar” uses the abbreviations M for Married, S for Single and W for Widow or Widower. In cases where other research has produced an alternative to the transcribed version, that alternative is shown alongside the transcribed version in [ ] brackets provided the alternative has an equal or greater likelihood of being the correct or preferred version. To save space and achieve consistency, the place of birth is given first, followed by the county, indicated by the use of the “Chapman County Code” system. The codes used in this Census are listed below: CHS Cheshire DEV Devon DOR Dorset GLS Gloucestershire HAM Hampshire MDX Middlesex NFK Norfolk OXF Oxfordshire SOM Somerset SAL Shropshire SFK Suffolk YKS Yorkshire Forename Surname Relation Mar Age Sex Occupation Birthplace to Head Town or Parish County 1 Wambrook (13 rooms, 5 male, 4 female - total 9 persons) Reginald EAMES Head S 42 M Farmer (Er) Chardstock DEV Miriam EAMES Mother W 66 F Private means Chard SOM William EAMES Brother S 43 M Bank Manager (W) Chardstock DEV Herbert EAMES Brother S 37 M Farmer (Er) Chardstock DEV Frank EAMES Brother S 36 M Farmer (Er) Chardstock DEV Ada EAMES Sister S 34 F Chardstock DEV Nora EAMES Sister S 33 F Chardstock DEV Lionel EAMES Brother S 24 M Farmer (Er) Wambrook SOM Kathleen EAMES Sister S 19 F Wambrook SOM Note: Miriam Eames completed the “Particulars of Marriage” section, even though this was not required of widows.
