The Order becomes effective on 13th January 2020 and will remain in force for eighteen months. These closures are to be part of phased works. Progress of Works in Detail Key Projects (pages 6 to 10) SRA 2016-17 Enhanced Programme (pages 11 to 21) INTRODUCTION In 2016-17, Somerset Rivers Authority (SRA) spent just over £6million on actions designed to give Somerset an extra level of flood protection. This end of year report explains where the money came from and how it was spent. It also gives information about projects that have been delayed or had their funding moved to other activities. These details have been provided because the SRA wants people to know what it has achieved across the county – and it wants to be properly accountable. The SRA raises extra money to deliver extra work. Schemes are prioritised for SRA funding on the basis of the main objectives in Somerset’s 20 Year Flood Action Plan, which was developed in response to the floods of winter 2013-14. This report is divided into two sections. Performance covers delivery overall and by funding source, plus a table summarising 2016-17 finance; Progress gives more details about major projects, and smaller actions grouped according to SRA workstream – Dredging & River Management, Land Management, Urban Water Management, Resilient Infrastructure and Building Community Resilience. Somerset’s approach is uniquely joined-up. This report details just one year of the SRA’s extra work.     PARISH OF WAMBROOK 1881 CENSUS RG11/2385 The census was carried out on the night of 3rd April 1881 and closely followed the format of the previous censuses taken between 1851 and 1871. The head of the family had to be defined as did the relationship to the head of each person staying in the house that night. The gender of each person was also recorded. Accurate ages were required throughout and were taken from the person’s last birthday. For infants under one year, the age was recorded either in months (m), weeks (w) or days (d). The rank, profession or occupation of each person was recorded and “Where Born” had to be completed by giving the county and town or parish of birth. An analysis of the recordings for Wambrook is tabled below: Age Group Under 10 68 25.8% 10 to 19 61 23.2% 20 to 29 26 9.9% 30 to 39 41 15.6% 40 to 49 19 7.2% 50 to 59 17 6.5% 60 to 69 22 8.4% 70 to 79 6 2.3% Over 80 3 1.1% Total 263 The census recorded 140 males (53.2% of total) and 123 females (46.8%) There were 48 occupied dwellings, which produced an average of 5.5 persons per dwelling. One uninhabited dwelling was recorded at Higher Wambrook. The transcript was made by members of CHRG from copies of the original documents. When extracting information from this transcript, the following points should be noted: * In 1881 Wambrook formed part of the County of Dorset, as the transfer to Somerset did not occur until 1896.

The public rights of way network is key to enabling residents and visitors alike to access services and enjoy the beauty of Somerset’s diverse natural and built environment. Over the next few years, the focus is going to be chiefly on performing our statutory duties. However, where resources allow we will strive to implement the key priority areas of this 2nd Improvement Plan and make Somerset a place and a destination for enjoyable walking, riding and cycling.     South Somerset Electoral Boundary Changes There are two electoral boundary changes being proposed locally that include changes that affect the Lopen Parish. Parliamentary Boundary Changes: The Parliamentary boundaries are being reviewed by the Boundary Commission for England in an attempt to even out the electoral numbers in each of the Parliamentary constituencies across England. It is proposed that Lopen (part of South Petherton) will be moved from Yeovil into a newly formed constituency named Glastonbury and Wincanton CC. See table below for clarification. The Male Workforce was 178, of whom 83 were employed on the 9 farms - 50 labourers, 13 horsemen, 5 cowmen, 2 shepherds etc). Hambridge Mills and Brewery (now Chalon Furniture) was in Curry Rivel parish but employed 5 millers/maltsters; 5 carters and 7 other men from Hambridge. There were also 9 carpenters, 3 blacksmiths, 10 gardeners, 4 withy growers and 6 basketmakers. There were 3 pubs, a Post Office, Grocer & Draper, and Fruit Dealer. The Female Workforce was 85 – 43 were shirt machinists and 12 others were buttonholers or collarmakers linked with the shirt factory in Westport. 15 women were in domestic service, 4 were dressmakers, 7 were schoolteachers plus a District Nurse etc. Old Age Pensions of 5/- a week had been introduced by Lloyd George’s Govt in Jan 1909. You had to be 70 years of age to qualify and it was means tested. There were 16 recipients in this census. The number of people actually born in the two villages was 270 out of 537 (50%). Two new features of the 1911 census were: a record of the number of years of marriage of adults (allowing us to identify their wedding year); a record of child mortality (surviving/deceased numbers).
