EMBASSY OF SPAIN WASHINGTON The exhibition The Art of Power: Royal Armor and Portraits from Imperial Spain presents a splendid selection of armor and portraits of the Spanish monarchy, specifically from the period spanning the European discovery of America to the emergence of the United States as an independent, sovereign nation. The Armory of the Royal Palace in Madrid has been, and remains today, the custodian of arms and armor that bear rich and complex decoration conveying an image of power, and that also provided models for official portraits as well as those commemorating notable political or military events. The exhibition at the National Gallery of Art in Washington brings together an outstanding selection from the collection of the Royal Armory, paired with portraits of the kings of Spain from the period known as the Spanish Empire. Together with works of armor by leading European armorers—Negroli, Helmschmid, and Campi—visitors will find superb paintings by the most prominent artists of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, including Rubens, Titian, Velázquez, Dürer, and others. The exhibition is an extraordinary cultural event that will display, for the first time outside of Madrid, exceptional works of art, witnesses to an age in which Spain was at the height of its power and had a presence throughout most of the world. These images of power constitute a magnificent cultural mission, one that will undoubtedly lead to a deeper understanding of Spain by the American public. The United States and Spain have always been linked by traditional and historical ties that have set a pattern for common endeavors in the cultural, political, and social spheres. This exhibition, made possible by the collaboration of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the National Heritage agency (Patrimonio Nacional) of Spain, and the State Corporation for Spanish Cultural Action Abroad (SEACEX), contributes in an excellent manner to the very close cooperation that already exists between the two countries. En la Armería del Palacio Real de Madrid se custodiaban, y así se hace actualmente, armas e indu- mentarias cuya decoración, riqueza y complejidad transmitían la imagen del poder, al mismo tiem- po que servían como modelo para los retratos oficiales o conmemorativos de destacados hechos polí- ticos o militares. La exposición en la National Gallery of Art de Washington recoge lo más selecto de esta colec- ción de la Real Armería, así como los retratos de los reyes de España en el periodo que se ha deno- minado «el imperio español». Junto a los principales armeros de Europa, Negroli, Helmschmid, Colman, Campi, encontrare- mos excelentes pinturas de los más destacados artistas del Renacimiento y del Barroco, Rubens, Tiziano, Velázquez, Durero… Es, por tanto, un hecho cultural extraordinario que da a conocer, por primera vez fuera de Madrid, singulares obras de arte, testimonio de una época en la que España se encontraba presente en la prác- tica totalidad del mundo. La imagen del poder se constituye ahora en una magnífica embajada cultural y con toda seguridad permitirá profundizar en el conocimiento de España por el pueblo americano. Estados Unidos y España han estado siempre muy unidos por tradicionales e históricos lazos que han marcado un devenir común en lo cultural, político y social. Esta exposición, que es producto de la colaboración entre la National Gallery of Art de Washington, el Patrimonio Nacional y la Socie- dad Estatal para la Acción Cultural Exterior, contribuye en alto grado de excelencia a fomentar, aún más, la muy estrecha cooperación entre los dos países. Entre los múltiples géneros artísticos que atesoran las colecciones reunidas a lo largo de los siglos por la monarquía española, ahora custodiadas por Patrimonio Nacional, las armaduras constituyen uno de los más sugerentes. Su creciente valoración historiográfica por parte de los especialistas en los últimos años ha permitido entender mejor la complejidad de su técnica y de sus funciones, no sólo militares sino tam- bién y de modo muy especial, representativas y suntuarias, así como las estrechas relaciones que encie- rran con otros géneros como la pintura. Es el propósito de la presente exposición leer esas dimensiones desde la unidad de unos objetos artísticos que alcanzaron su máximo desarrollo en los siglos XVI y XVII, coincidiendo tanto con el esplendor de la Casa de Austria como con la pérdida creciente de utilidad material por los avances del arte de la guerra. En El arte del poder: Armaduras y retratos de la España impe- rial se presentan por primera vez, reunidas en un discurso coherente por el análisis de sus mensajes, cua- dros, armaduras y tapices, es decir, vestiduras de metal e imágenes, para desentrañar el universo estéti- co y simbólico que hizo de estas piezas un vehículo esencial para la transmisión de una ideología de poder y, por tanto, un testimonio inapreciable de la realidad histórica de España y Europa en los siglos del Renacimiento y el Barroco, hasta llegar a sus últimos ecos bajo la dinastía borbónica del siglo XVIII. El arte del poder es una oportunidad única para difundir el significado de unas piezas que, aún habien- do sido objeto de otras muestras en las últimas décadas, carecían hasta ahora de la adecuada presen- tación de sus implicaciones iconográficas en relación con el contexto social y político que las produ- jo. De ahí el interés de la selección realizada entre algunos de los mejores exponentes custodiados en la Real Armería de Madrid —una de las más importantes del mundo—, que, a través del presente montaje, se despliegan en diálogo con los cuadros en los que, esencialmente a partir de los modelos pictóricos elaborados a mediados del siglo XVI desde Italia y Flandes por Tiziano y Antonio Moro, las difundieron como atributos esenciales de la majestad. Para acercar al gran público norteamericano esta muestra han aunado sus esfuerzos dos institucio- nes claves de la cultura española como son el propio Patrimonio Nacional, custodio de las piezas, y la Sociedad Estatal para la Acción Cultural Exterior (SEACEX), que desde hace años se propone contri- buir a la difusión de las mejores realizaciones de la cultura española pasada y presente, así como un gran centro museístico como es la National Gallery of Art de Washington. Powell III Director de la National Gallery of Art, Washington Of the many artistic genres in the collections amassed over the centuries by the Spanish monarchy and now in the care of the Patrimonio Nacional, armor is one of the most fascinating. The increasing attention accorded to the art of armor in scholarly literature has provided a greater understanding of the technical complexities involved in making armor and of its importance as the symbolic embodiment of sovereign power and luxury. Recent studies have also considered the interrelationship of armor and other art forms. For the first time, The Art of Power: Royal Armor and Portraits from Imperial Spain brings armor together with closely related paintings and tapestries of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, when armor reached the height of its development and the House of Habsburg was at its zenith, with territories extending across Europe and the Americas. What links the works of art in the exhibition are the messages they convey. The Art of Power explores the aesthetic and symbolic universe that made these objects essential vehicles for transmitting an ideology of power, reflecting the historical realities of Spain and Europe during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The Art of Power presents a unique opportunity to acquaint viewers with the significance of royal armor, particularly in terms of its complex iconography and the social and political contexts in which it was produced.

CARROLL History is always a field of controversy, especially between those who recognize Christ as history’s Lord and those who do not. The mission of the Church in history is, of course, to help all men draw closer to their Lord. Therefore, the high dramas of history always involve the success or failure of the Church’s apostolate, and the success or failure of those who seek to make that apostolate either easier or more difficult. Few historical conflicts have more to do with such concerns than that between Philip II of Spain and William Cecil of England. Nothing less than the fate of the Church’s mission in Northern Europe hung in the balance. In the following thorough study, Warren H. Carroll paints the antagonists in rich colors, reveals the points at issue, and describes the outcome in terms no less relevant in the twentieth century than they were in the sixteenth. The author also provides a valuable lesson in the trauma and devastation of Christian disunity. Hindsight is one of the greatest obstacles to a true understanding of history. There is a natural tendency to look upon the way things actually happened as the way they must have happened, as an inescapable consequence of the trends and forces at work. Even among those who would indignantly reject the designation of historical determinist, the effects of hindsight create a sort of constant bias in favor of the inevitability of the historical events we know to have taken place.
