Sites of wildlife and geological importance in Northamptonshire

Statutory Sites:

Special Protected Area (SPA)

SPAs are strictly protected sites classified in accordance with Article 4 of the EC Directive on the conservation of wild birds (79/409/EEC), the Birds Directive.

Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI)

The SSSI series provide statutory protection for the best examples of the natural environment. SSSI were originally notified under the National Park and Access to the Countryside Act 1949 and they were renotified under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Improved provisions for their protection and management were introduced in the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000.

National Nature Reserve (NNR)

NNRs are declared by the statutory country conservation agency (English Nature) under the National Park and Access to the Countryside Act 1949. NNR contain the most important examples of natural and semi-natural ecosystems within Great Britain. NNR conserve the habitats within them and offer opportunities for research.

Local Nature Reserve (LNR)

LNRs are declared under the National Park and Access to the Countryside Act 1949 by local authorities. LNR are declared and managed for nature conservation, education and research or opportunities for public access to nature.

Non-statutory sites:

County Wildlife Site (CWS)

County Wildlife Sites are areas of land which are rich in wildlife and are the equivalent to Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation. Criteria for selection take in threats and declines in certain species, national priorities and local distinctiveness. The CWS system is managed, in partnership, by The Wildlife Trust, local authorities, statutory nature conservation agencies, local naturalists and landowners.

Protected Wildflower Verge (PWV)

Protected Wildflower Verges are roadside verges rich in wildlife and are crucial to the success of the local Biodiversity Action Plan. Criteria for selection take in threats and declines in certain species, national priorities and local distinctiveness. The PWV system is managed, in partnership, by The Wildlife Trust, local authorities, statutory nature conservation agencies, local naturalists and landowners.

Pocket Park

The Pocket Park vision is to develop easy public access to the countryside, bringing the countryside to the people and providing opportunities for enjoyment and understanding of 'Countryside on the Doorstep'. Over the past 18 years, the county council has worked in partnership with many organisations and other local authorities to help create 80 Pocket Parks. For more information on this scheme please refer to the website at www.pocketparks.com.

Regionally Important Geological and Geomorphological Site (RIGS)

Regionally Important Geological and Geomorphological Sites (RIGS) are the most important places for geology and geomorphology outside the statutory SSSI. The sites are designated using locally developed criteria and are assessed by the local RIGS group.

Brookfield Plantation

Administrative areas: Gretton (Civil Parish) Northamptonshire (English County 1974 -) Northamptonshire (Watsonian Vice County) Status(es): County Wildlife Site Centroid: SP 895 920 (Site Centroid) Site type: Site Site/Subsite hierarchy: Brookfield Plantation ....Brookfield Plantation Pool

File code: C/27.11.90

Description: A large area of mixed plantation on old quarry workings, with some influence in the groundflora from nearby ancient woodland sites. The rides hold the greatest species diversity and need a summer survey to provide a full species list. The tree species are mostly planted sycamore, larch and Norway spruce, with some non-native alder planted more recently in wetter areas (including at the base of the north end of the gullets alongside Corby Tunnel, which run through the plantation). The edges of the compartments however do have more of a variety as a margin of varied scrub has grown up next to some of the rides. The rides at the time of survey were varied. Those of lower diversity had abundant Ranunculus repens and Dactylis glomerata, with some poorly-drained areas dominated by Deschampsia caespitosa. The more diverse rides had a mixture of grasses and a better meadow structure, and appear to have been mown fairly recently. Grasses present include Cynosurus cristatus, Poa pratensis and Arrhenatherum elatius. Carex flacca and C. hirta are abundant in places, sometimes taking the place of grasses. Meadow herbs still present (at the time of survey, November) include nigra, Lathyrus pratensis, Prunella vulgaris, Cerastium fontanum, Odontites verna and frequent Daucus carota. Groundflora under the conifers is sparse, although ferns are frequent in some areas and there are some patches of Mercurialis perennis and sparse Hyacinthoides non-scriptus. These rides represent a very large area of grassland surrounded by undisturbed cover, so a summer survey could well reveal a lot more interest than was evident in November. As it is the sheer size of this site makes it unusual, and a good potential source of food and cover for a large number of birds and mammals. 2002: Previous surveyors description still stands, this summer survey confirms the pervious surveyors assumptions that the rides contain a greater diversity of species - the ride system contains a particulary rich calcareous/neutral grassland composition.

Description: Two deep pools in a particularly deep quarry working within Brookfield Plantation, now more or less joined by a swampy area between the two pools. The water is deep and clear, although it appears to have become dystrophic where shaded by thick growth of sallows and other scrub. There are lots of fish present which are fished, although probably not stocked. There is also reports of newts present, and frogs were seen at the time of survey. The vegetation consists of a fringe of emergent species plus variable degrees of submerged growth. The main species present are Scirpus lacustris, Alisma plantago-aquatica, Eleocharis palustris and patches of Juncus articulatus where the edges are particularly shallow. Submerged and floating species were very difficult to reach but include Potamogeton natans, Ranunculus aquatilis and Agrostis stolonifera. It appears that the rarity Alisma plantago-aquatica is locally frequent, although it could not be reached in order to confirm this. Much of the steep bank around the water is colonized by scrub, but on the grassier parts there are hundreds of Dactylorhiza fuchsii spikes. The site is notable for the large numbers of Odonata present, especially damselflies. Species seen at the time of survey include large red damselfly, common blue, blue-tailed and banded demoiselle. Dragonflies seen include great Aeshna, common darter, emperor and four-spotted chaser. These pools add greatly to the habitat value of the plantation as a whole, and to the mosaic of surrounding habitats. Worth a survey to see just how many breeding Odonata are present here. 2002: The species composition of these ponds has declined since the previous survey, but the ponds contain one county rarity - Alisma lanceolatum. The site however retains its CWS status by providing an additional habitat for Brookfield Plantation.

File code: C/24.6.94

Description: Disused mineral railway line with steep banks and deep cutting. Similar in some ways to the two gullets to the south (see separate site cards for Corby Tunnel Sites). Resurveyed 1994 (See file for 1990 description). The base of the cutting still has clinker in parts, and is nearly all used as a track for access to the plantations, so that there is little vegetation actually down the centre of each cutting. NB Part of the disused railway line which ran west of the cutting still remains, and is separately owned so has been recorded as a subsite (West Cutting) although it is in fact continuous with the rest of the cutting. The northeast end of the site is flooded, with a deep pool containing numerous fish and aquatic insects. This is also recorded as a subsite (Pool). The cutting as a whole is notable for the very herb-rich grassland on almost all the slopes, and the good variety of scrub scattered over the more well-established slopes. The edges of the tracks are dominated by Lotus corniculatus with other low-growing herbs and abundant Vulpia bromoides on the most bare areas. Ruderal species are common on the strip of track recently disturbed by the laying of a British Gas pipeline across part of the track. Scrub density varies from true hedges alongside the track in parts (eg next to Gretton Plantations), which are all scrub, to odd bushes and saplings throughout the grassland. Species include hawthorn, blackthorn, dogrose, silver birch, hazel, bramble, grey sallow, planted green alder and locally frequent Scots pine seedlings. Some of the grassland is dominated by Calamagrostis epigejos, and there is an area of Phragmites australis with frequent Deschampsia cespitosa in a (now dry) damp hollow. Most of the grassland though is more of a mixture, with no clear dominant species and grasses replaced by Carex flacca in places. Festuca arundinacea is locally dominant, as are Bromus erectus, Festuca rubra and Arrhenatherum elatius. Other grasses present include Poa angustifolia, P. pratensis, Dactylis glomerata, Anthoxanthum odoratum, Holcus lanatus, Trisetum flavescens and Cynosurus cristatus. Herb species are plentiful, including thousands of Dactylorhiza fuchsii spikes, many Ophrys opifera spikes, areas of shorter vegetation dominated by Lotus corniculatus and abundant Leucanthemum vulgare. Other herb species are mostly those typical of dry grassland and/or rocky ground, including Fragaria vesca, Bellis perennis, Trifolium spp, Medicago lupulina, Daucus carota, Carlina vulgaris, Euphrasia agg, Centaurium erythraeum, Hypochoeris radicata, Agrimonia eupatoria, Centaurea nigra, Knautia arvensis and Pilosella officinalis. Butterflies seen include green hairstreak, meadow brown, small (inc. Essex?) skipper, holly blue, common blue and gatekeeper. This is plainly an important invertebrate habitat, with the large expanse of and short, warm turf supporting crickets and grasshopper, hunting dragonflies and damselflies, spiders and bumblebee burrows in addition to the butterflies. There was lots of evidence of deer migration along the floor of the cutting. Also of note was the presence of a grass snake; there is a possibility that such a perfect reptile habitat also supports lizards. 2002: Many Silver Birch and alder trees have started to grow along the length of the track and it is beginning to scrub over in most parts. The sub-site pool is still present and the West Cutting provides a continuation of this thin-soil rich calcareous grassland.

Description: A broad, deep pool in the flooded northwest end of Brookfield Plantation Cutting. The water appears to be clear and well-populated with fish, and supports mallard and coots. The fringe of emergent vegetation includes Eleocharis palustris, Agrostis stolonifera, Typha latifolia and Juncus articulatus. The floating and submerged species were difficult (and dangerous) to reach, but include Alisma plantago-aquatica, a smaller population that may be A. lanceolata, Potamogeton natans and Polygonum amphibium. There appears to be a great deal of variety in the submerged species, but it was impossible to reach them although at least one Ranunculus sp. is plainly present. The main significance of the pool is for dragonflies and damselflies, both breeding here in large numbers. A very useful addition to the already very diverse cutting, making it an invaluable mosaic of habitats including the adjacent woodland. 2002: Only 8 species could be seen of interest to the future of this CWS sub-site. The large pond is still present and there are areas where vegetation has established. This site remains of CWS status but only as a sub-site habitat for Brookfield Plantation Cutting. In time, this site may become more diverse to hold status individually.

Description: This projection from the main Brookfield Plantation cutting used to stretch for almost a kilometre further west, but infilling by the civic amenity tip and adjacent factory works has reduced it to a much shorter but significant spur on the main cutting. The sides are more heavily scrubbed than most of the main cutting, and the proximity to Rockingham Wood probably accounts for the naturally high diversity of woody species present. These include dogwood, hazel, hawthorn, blackthorn, young oak and ash, field maple, common sallow, almond willow (which could have escaped from ornamental planting around the factories to the south) and honeysuckle. Other woodland species associated with the most heavily-scrubbed area are mostly on the north side (nearest Rockingham Wood) and include Brachypodium sylvaticum, Viola odorata, V. riviviana, Calamagrostis epigejos and Valeriana officinalis. The base of the cutting is used as a track and by large numbers of deer, and has short and/or ruderal vegetation. The large numbers of Trifolium spp, Lotus corniculatus and Medicago lupulina attract insects to the warm ground. The diversity of herb species is best in the shorter areas of grassland, which has a good diversity of grasses including Arrhenatherum elatius, Brachypodium pinnatum, Festuca arundinacea, F. rubra, Holcus lanatus, Poa pratensis, P. angustifolia and Trisetum flavescens. The wider, open area of grassland where this cutting joins the main site has a high proportion of Bromus erectus and appears to be on the most calcareous substrate of the site. All the grassland areas have a good diversity of herb species, although the triangle of wider, more open grassland joining the main length of cutting is probably the richest. Species include abundant Leucanthemum vulgare, Fragaria vesca, Achillea millefolium, Hypericum perforatum, Pilosella officnalis, Centarea nigra and Potentilla reptans, with Prunella vulgaris, Rhinanthus minor, Linum catharticum, Carlina vulgaris and locally frequent Dactylorhiza fuchsii. A small damp area amongst the grassland has abundant Galium palustre with Angelica sylvestris and Dipsacus fullonum. Some of the scrub on the sides of the cutting has been cleared this year, leaving plenty of brash cover and good bushy growth of the cut bushes. Total county rarities found = four. The triangle of grassland had a basking grass snake; other species of note include large numbers of butterflies, most notably green hairstreak. has also been recorded, and small skippers were seen at the time of survey but could not be caught to precisely identify them. Essex skipper is not therefore confirmed for this season, but could well still be present. A very valuable variant of the habitat in the main cutting, particularly for mammals as a feeding area next to the cover of the wood. The unusual variety of scrub suggests that even if the grassland is lost to scrub cover the habitat will still be more varied than most overgrown grasslands. NB This site was saved this year, by consultation, from infilling by the adjacent Solway Foods company, who have limited their infilling to the already-damaged gullet at the west end of this bit of cutting. 2002: Remote survey carried out as access permission was not granted. The site seems to remain in good condition. As with the adjacent Brookfield Plantation Cutting, there is a transistion between scrub, grassland and bare ground. The grassland is calcareous and soils are very thin. A fuller species list was recorded in 1994.

File code: C/2.8.91

Description: This is the site of a large, open-cast ironstone quarry, now roughly regraded. Some parts are pasture, other areas contain woodland (recently-planted and/or longer established). Several ponds and lakes are dotted along the base of an old quarry gullet to the east of the area. The old quarry runs approximately north-south and has sides of around 35` slope. It has only recently been regraded, and supports a rather sparse and limited vegetation of maximum 40% cover. This includes Brachypodium pinnatum, Centaurium erythraea, Tussilago farfara and Blackstonia perfoliata. Deer and rabbits cross the areas, also possibly badgers; but it seems to form a thoroughfare more than a feeding area The sheep pasture, reclaimed from the quarry land, is dominated by Trisetum flavescens, with Cynosurus cristatus and other common grasses. Medicago lupulina and Lotus corniculatus are amongst the commonest herb spp. present. Poorly drained parts have tufts of Juncus inflexus and J. conglomeratus. Shorter areas support Potentilla reptans, Lotus corniculatus and Festuca rubra. Small areas used for heavy plant machinery training are entirely dominated by Calamagrostis epigejos, with Brachypodium pinnatum in areas of shallow soil. Overall, the area has good potential for calcareous grassland species. Most areas other than the above have a wide variety of grassland and herbs. The large area of -rich grassland provides very good insect habitat; many for butterflies and moths incuding six-spot burnet moths, cinnabar moth, red admiral, small and large skippers, comma, painted lady, small tortoiseshell, green veined white, large white, wall brown, holly blue, common blue, peacock, meadow brown, gatekeeper, ringlet and a species of Hawkmoth. A large lake is occasionally used for swimming and fishing. The fringing vegetation is variable, but includes almost an acre of reedbed. Brown Aeshna, black tailed skimmer, migrant hawker, ruddy darter (needs confirming), common darter, common blue damselfly, azure damselfly and blue-tailed damselfly were seen at the time of survey. There is a small patch of woodland cover in the north of the west border of the site consisting mainly of alder and hawthorn. This has little botanical diversity but represents the main area of cover in that part of the site. A more significant area of woodland is the tree cover next to the stream (a tributary of the Willow Brook). The water looked polluted at the time of survey, as did the small lake that forms a widened part of the stream. The stream and small lake are heavily shaded and contain very little of the botanical diversity found in the ponds and lake. The trees are mostly naturalized birch and sycamore, with some planted larch and pine. This is probably the most valuable woodland on the site with good mammal and bird cover. It is used, if not inhabited, by fox, badgers, voles, woodmice, squirrels, rabbits and hedgehogs, with suspected mink activity alongside. Because of the importance of the Willow Brook this might be worth including in the next otter survey of the area, although the water quality does not look very promising for fish. 2002: This year's survey highlighted that the central gullet located in Corby Old Quarries contained the majority of the botanical interest with the surrounding fields in the quarry now being of poor/little botanical interest. In addition, a report by ESL investigated the invertebrate interest of the site, and showed little interest. A decision has now been made to retain the gullet as a CWS sub-site along with Corby Old Quarry Ponds and the fields surrounding the gullet have now been denotified as CWS.

Administrative areas: Gretton (Civil Parish) Northamptonshire (English County 1974 -) Status(es): County Wildlife Site Centroid: SP 893 915 (Site Centroid) Site type: Site Site/Subsite hierarchy: Corby Tunnel Quarries File code: C/27.11.90

Description: Two deep ironstone gullets resulting from quarrying on either side of the Corby Tunnel. The tunnel is beneath the raised, central track between the two quarries, and is marked by large, brick, cylindrical air vents every hundred yards or so. The gullets show an interesting cross section of the local geology, but are predominantly ironstone and are quite similar to each other. The main difference is that the eastern quarry has a rather damper base. The floor of the Western gullet is mostly bare, with sparse Salix cinerea scrub and a few ground species such as Heiracium pilosella. On the steep banks the east and west sides differ. The western bank is dominated by Calamagrostis epigejos and occasional young Pinus saplings encroaching from the plantation, young hawthorn scrub grows up parts. The eastern bank has more interesting vegetation. The base is bare ironstone rock and has a few colonisers, notably Fragaria vesca, Leontodon autumnalis. The bank is grassier, but dominated by hawthorn scrub. Chamaerion angustifolium, Agrostis tenuis, Leucanthemum vulgare, Centurea nigra and other grassland herbs grow thinly between the scrub. The bare face above the scrub layer is of more interest and contains sparse Festuca ovina and several mosses, fungi and lichens, particularly Cladonia portentosa. Herbs include, Blackstonia perfoliata, Heiracium pilosella, Verbascum sp, Carex otrubae, Viola odorata, Centaureum erythraea and Inula conyza. The eastern gullet has dense Calamagrostis epigejos over nearly the whole floor. There is some good grassland at the north end of this gullet, containing Inula conyza, Erigeron acer, Daucus carota and more typical meadow species. The south end is dominated by Deschampsia caespitosa tufts, plus Typha angustifolia round the more dried out pond areas (NB Alisma and Potamogeton spp. previously recorded here). The western bank has sparse Salix scrub and Calamagrostis grassland with rather limited species diversity, but the eastern bank is very similar to the eastern bank of the previous gullet, with abundant Daucus carota in addition to colonising species. The central track over the tunnel has more established grassland, dominated by Arrhenatherum elatius and Deschampsia cespitosa, with Agrostis tenuis and Cynosurus cristatus. The central track has short grassland (around 10cm tall vegetation) and moss; the edges are longer (to 40cm) and flanked with patchy scrub. Species include abundant P. lanceolata, Centaurea nigra, C. otrubae, C. hirta, Lotus corniculatus, Achillea millefolium, Leucanthemum vulgare, Hypericum perforatum, Lathyrus pratensis, Centaurium erythraea, Dactlylorhiza fuchsii and Ophrys apifera. In the 1994 survey the diversity appeared to have improved, and green hairstreak butterflies were found in the adjacent railway cutting this year, and both these and other invertebrates of interest could well be in the gullets as well. Other species of note include golden pheasants nesting in the base of the gullets and large numbers of deer. As with the adjacent railway cutting, this might be a reptile site for grass snakes and/or lizards. The eastern (west-facing) slopes have the most botanical interest, and deserve a more thorough survey. There is little that could be done to preserve this diversity apart from occasional scrub control (not likely to be required for a while, and probably rather hazardous to undertake). Rabbit grazing on these slopes is helping the species diversity. 2002:Previous surveyors description still stands, encroaching scrub must be kept in check to prevent losses to the calcareous grassland interest.

Number of species: 155 Weldon Churchyard

Administrative areas: Northamptonshire (English County 1974 -) Weldon (Civil Parish) Status(es): County Wildlife Site Centroid: SP 928 894 (Site Centroid) Site type: Site Site/Subsite hierarchy: Weldon Churchyard File code: C/13.8.92

Description: A regularly mown area of churchyard which is treated more as a hay meadow than as more closely/frequently mown grassland where the visitors to the church walk. The area of interest is probably cut once a year and this has produced an unusually fine and species rich sward of grassland type MG1e. The sward is dominated by Festuca rubra, although Arrhenatherum elatius is frequent too. Other species include Dactylis glomerata, Lolium perenne, Trisetum flavescens and frequent Festuca arundinacea. The herb content is high, and the result of autumn cutting has been a very colourful sward, with frequent Campanula rotundifolia, Galium verum, G. mollugo, Pilosella officinalis, Rumex acetosa, Pimpinella saxifraga, Achillea millefolium, Centaurea nigra, Plantago media, Leucanthemum vulgare, Bellis perennis, Saxifraga granulata and Carduus nutans. The trees around the perimeter of the churchyard ar mostly sycamore, ash and hawthorn, with a sparse vegetation of Taraxacum officinale, Geranium robertianum, Urtica dioica and Hedera helix underneath. Apart from these more disturbed and shaded patches under the trees the sward is fairly homogeneous. A very nice site that could probably improve further with a continuation of this management. The removal of the cuttings has caused the diversity, so it would be worth checking occasionally to ensure that this practice is continuing. NB the present encumbent is Rev Timothy Withers Green. 2002: Well mown churchyard, used regularly and managed well. The grass sward is unifromily low except around the gravestones. The individual stones have other (ornamentals etc) planted within them. No cuttings are left after cutting still.

Number of species: 64 Weldon Marsh

Other names: Baron Bassett's Field Leys Field Pocket Park Administrative areas: Northamptonshire (English County 1974 -) Weldon (Civil Parish) Status(es): County Wildlife Site Pocket Park by Northants County Council Centroid: SP 928 895 (Site Centroid) Site type: Site Site/Subsite hierarchy: Weldon Marsh File code: C/PP/13.8.92

Description: Now a Pocket Park. A small area of marsh surrounding a spring adjacent to a fast-flowing section of the Willow Brook. The marsh is dominated by Impatiens glandulifera, with frequent Apium nodiflorum and tall ruderal herbs such as Epilobium hirsutum. The area as a whole is undisturbed and provides dense cover next to the brook. The edges of the brook are heavily burrowed, possibly by both mink and watervole. A kingfisher has been seen along the banks and although the brook has little associated vegetation the rarity Elodea nuttalii was found. This area is shortly to be managed as a Pocket Park, and has the potential for better diversity than at present. An interesting site as there may be more mammal interest than meets the eye. Worth encouraging more botanical diversity, particularly as this could be a good dragonfly site along the brook. 2002: Marshy grassland in parts with scrub, some trees and a pond all in close proximity to the main river. There is housing development on the northern side. This pocket park is a valuable resource for wildlife. This site is recommended for extension.

Number of species: 74 Weldon Mound

Other names: Gilbey's Hills Administrative areas: Northamptonshire (English County 1974 -) Weldon (Civil Parish) Status(es): County Wildlife Site Centroid: SP 924 896 (Site Centroid) Site type: Site Site/Subsite hierarchy: Weldon Mound File code: C/13/5/93

Description: This is part of a larger area of unused land in the centre of Weldon village which is to be made a Pocket Park. Only a small corner is of Prime Site interest, as it contains a quite different grassland type to the lush, rank vegetation on most of the site. The grassland is on the slopes of two mounds which could be old earthworks but are more likely to be the result of more recent work, eg quarrying. The substrate is slightly calcareous and apparently lacks the high nutrient levels of the surrounding area. It is also quite rocky in structure (a subsoil mound?). The grassland contains CG3 type sward, with frequent Bromus erectus and Festuca rubra rather than F. ovina. Other grasses include Poa pratensis and a small patch of Brachypodium pinnatum (representing a variation into CG5). Carex flacca, C. caryophyllea and C. divulsa were also present (the last two are rare in Northants.) The herb content is particularly rich, with large patches of both Plantago media and Pilosella officinalis. Saxifraga granulata forms several patches on the site, with other herb species distributed more or less homogeneously. These include abundant Sanguisorba minor, Salvia horminoides, Bellis perennis, Centaurea nigra, Lotus corniculatus, Galium verum, Ranunculus acris and Plantago lanceolata, with frequent Luzula campestris. The site is grazed by rabbits and has a few anthills. The short turf appears to attract insects, particularly beetles. This is only a tiny fragment of the type of grassland that flourished on the nearby Hills and Holes. The rabbit grazing is essential to distinguish it from the very tall, rank grassland of the surrounding land, and it may be threatened by takeover from the taller species. Some kind of management is ideally needed soon. 2002: The low lying grassland is very rank with Urtica dioica dominating certain parts. This is as a result of horse grazing. Conversley, the hills are species-rich, low turf, high herb content habitats. The species found include Salvia verbenaca, Sanguisorba minor and Knautia arvensis amongst many good plants.
