Buletinul Universităţii Naţionale de Apărare „Carol I“ FORTIFICAȚIA ANTICĂ. LIMESUL ROMAN ANCIENT FORTIFICATION. THE ROMAN LIMES Lt.col. ing.drd. Ancient fortifications represent a landmark of military science transformed into the complexity of the forms of expression and expression of history as a living image of the past. They provide a chapter chronologically structured on elements that accompany the concepts and set of values that promote and place epochal moments in the culture and civilization of the world. The typology and classification of fortifications develops distinct elements of the evolution of society as a whole, exalting the effort of continuity and excellence of humanity. Cuvinte-cheie: limes; drum de hotar; palisadă; turnuri; fortificaţie. Keywords: limes; boundary road; palisade; towers; fortification. Modul de organizare administrativă şi acestuia. Generalul Carl von Clausewitz (1780- militară a primelor formaţiuni sau grupuri de 1831) confirma utilitatea strategică a drumurilor

Cercetări Arheologice, XXV, 2018, 77‐90 /DOI: / A ‘NEW’ ROMAN TEMPORARY CAMP IN PARÂNG MOUNTAINS Eugen S. Teodor, Aurora Peţan, Alexandru Hegyi Abstract A new Roman camp was documented – mainly for its topographical features – far away from any known camp from Şureanu Mountains. It has a typical size of the encampments from around Sarmizegetusa Regia, 5 hectares, as no one reaches a full-size legionary camp. Having tituli and being made of two parts separated by a palisade, it finds also analogies in the region (as Comărnicel 1). What is really outstanding at the encampment from Cracul Găurilor is the steep slope on which it is standing with more than half of its surface. Its location raises the problem of new routes driving to the Dacian capital. One of them could have its departure point at the lower end of the Jiu Gorges, at the Vârtop fort. Another – less plausible but still possible – would start on the Middle Olt River, at Buridava.

  • Map 22 Moesia Inferior Compiled by A.G
Map 22 Moesia Inferior Compiled by A.G. Poulter, 1996 Introduction Reconstructing ancient topography and land-use in this region is exceedingly difficult. Although the courses of the Danube and its major left- and right-bank tributaries have changed little since antiquity, land reclamation and dredging to improve navigation along the Danube have substantially narrowed the river’s flow. They have also eliminated much of the marshland which existed between its channels and especially, but not exclusively, along its left bank. Here, the series of 1:200,000 maps produced by the Militärgeographische Institut (Vienna, 1940) has been used in preference to later cartography, since they provide a more reliable, if still tentative, guide to the landscape within the Danubian plain. Eastern Dacia and Scythia Minor are covered by TIR Romula (1969), which takes an optimistic view of the identification of ancient sites and roads. The western limit of Moesia Inferior is included in TIR Naissus (1976). Except for Poulter (1995), no recent detailed maps exist for settlement in the north Danubian plain, and none for northern Thrace. Two publications (Hoddinott 1975; Velkov 1977) remain the best authorities for Bulgaria from the classical to Late Roman periods. For Dacia (present day Romania), there is a useful and notably reliable source for military sites (Cătăniciu 1981), and another for civilian settlements (Tudor 1968). The Directory cites further bibliography for sites of exceptional importance where recent excavations have been carried out. It also registers uncertainty about the function of some sites (fort or settlement, for example). With notable exceptions (cf. Maddjarov 1990), the exact alignment of roads cannot be confidently determined.

Effective and competent methodologies have been developed for surveying and modeling archaeological sites and thus provide high quality and accurate realistic textured models for better research, preservation, education and monitoring projects. A specific methodology was applied to produce a scale 3D model of “Arutela (Căciulata) Roman Castrum” in a digital environment. A complex product is created, with complemental geometry and texture. The accurate geometry and appearance details (size, shape, position and texture) can be used for a proper documentation, preservation and restauration applications. Keywords: Close-range photogrammetry; Digital photographs; 3D modeling; Archaeological site; Heritage conservation. Introduction Close-range photogrammetry offers solutions for 3D modelling of archaeological sites as technology is continuously developing. A digital 3D model depicting an archaeological object or site, with complex geometry and texture details, can be further used for diverse applications. Nowadays,

  • Stamped Building Materials Discovered at Reşca-Romula
STAMPED BUILDING MATERIALS DISCOVERED AT REŞCA-ROMULA MIRCEA NEGRU* Introduction Bricks were a widespread material in constructions in the Roman Empire, especially since the time of Augustus, when they began to be burnt, which greatly increased their resistance to changes in climate and temperature. The lack of stone and the perishability of wood or unfired clay in Romula, led to the development of an industry of ceramic building materials, bricks and tiles, in particular. In the 2nd–3rd centuries AD in the Roman world, the technology of producing good quality bricks and tiles had been already perfected as a result of centuries of experience. Taking the volume and weight of these materials into account, they could not have been brought from great distances. On the other hand, the raw material was sufficient near most urban centers.1 The systematic excavations undertaken at Romula in the northern sector, led to the identification and research of the largest ceramic production center in the province of Dacia (Inferior) Malvensis. Among the ceramic production workshops were also those in which bricks, tiles and other building materials were manufactured.2 Some of the bricks and tiles produced at Romula bear the stamps of military or civilian producers. In this article we aim to present a batch of stamped bricks and tiles, discovered between 2013–2018 on the territory of Reşca village in Dobrosloveni commune, Olt County, in two different locations: in the Central Fortification, and in the south-eastern part of the Roman town of Romula, in the spot located in the actual Severus street, no.

  • Newsletter: New Records in the Getty Vocabularies
Newsletter: New records in the Getty Vocabularies For the period January-June 2021 From the Getty Vocabulary Program, we send greetings and are hopeful that you are well. Here in Los Angeles, we are beginning to come back to the Getty offices slowly, after many months working from home. After our work-from-home period, we happily find ourselves at a significant milestone: We have essentially cleared out hundreds of thousands of backlogged contributions to the Vocabularies! With consultants at Ontotext and our colleagues at Getty Digital for technical support, the Vocabulary Program editors focused on pre-processing data in Excel and in Open Refine (https://www.getty.edu/research/tools/vocabularies/obtain/openrefine.html). Details about new data loads to each Vocabulary appear below. While we have had a moratorium on new contributions while working on the backlog, we may now begin to accept proposals for new contributions. Learn about the Letter of Agreement, the scope of each Vocabulary, and procedures for proposing contributions here: https://www.getty.edu/research/tools/vocabularies/contribute.html A primary goal is to make the Getty Vocabularies ever more multicultural, multilingual, and inclusive. We have undertaken a study to identify content lacunae in the Vocabularies, which we will target according to our strategic plan in the coming months. Our user statistics have remained consistently high during this period, making the Getty Vocabularies (https://www.getty.edu/research/tools/vocabularies/index.html) the most used resources on the GRI site. Total searches in FY21, July 2020-June 2021: Q1:566,228, Q2:360,194; Q3 616,048; Q4:612,074 Use of the APIs, LOD, Relational Tables, and XML formats was also high during this period.
