Skills and Employability Service By: David Knox To: ELS partnership board Date 21/10/15 Subject Skills and Employability - Guilds Classification: Hospitality, Leisure and Tourism is the most advanced guild so far with a wide range of support across the sector, culminating in the Big Hospitality Conversation with a date yet to be decided. There was a HLTT zone at the Kent Choices 4 U Live event in March. An employability passport is being reviewed with The Abbey School, MidKent College, The Rosemary Shrager Cookery School and East Kent College. Other key stakeholders include Visit Kent and Springboard UK, Tom Oulton is currently working with them for feedback on the pilot and agreeing the next stages. We have coordinated the schools engagement for Rosemary Shrager and her apprenticeship scheme this year. Between February and May twelve events in local schools were held. The feedback has been very good, and the school has received a good level of applications for the September start. The guild plans to create a web-based portal to assist employers to signpost changing employment and skills needs to ensure providers can meet existing demand and deliver skills pipelines in advance of future requirements. The portal will provide training and skills information, advice and guidance about entry paths to the sector and a means for employers to offer work experience, apprenticeships, part and full time work and professional career opportunities. The portal will link with Kent County Council’s Kent Choices 4U site. A scoping meeting has taken place with Visit Kent about whether Transport and Logistics would be set up as separate guilds, however from discussions with employers it was agreed to keep them as part of this guild. A meeting for the steering group is being planned for November to review current status and a new date for the Big Hospitality Conversation has been confirmed 27/1/16 at Ashford. Construction and the Built Environment – An initial steering meeting took place in February. Key stakeholders at this stage include trade organisations, FE Colleges, schools and contractors. Those present at the meeting from the education sector included MidKent College, Folkestone Academy, KAFEC and TrAC SAS. The guild format was established after several successful steering groups to discuss how we might as local authorities use procurement to increase the quantity and quality of young people going into the sector. A call for action has been sent out to create a single point of contact and a guild website, which will publicise outreach opportunities available through the guild to schools. Land Securities have now attended the last meeting and we are working with them on their employment strategy in Ebbsfleet, which will create 600 opportunities year on year until 2022. Education and Young Peoples’ Services Skills and Employability Service At the Kent Construction Guild Meeting which took place on 30th June. Speakers included Joseph Buels of Mascalls School, who spoke about study programmes and best practice in schools, and Ed Dean of Land Securities, with a focus on the employment strategy in Ebbsfleet Valley. The next meeting of this guild is being planned for November to review outcomes and action points from last meeting, with updates from key stakeholders. This has created links to a wide range of employers we need to see how we can develop the guild through this portal. A meeting has now taken place with our Arts and Culture team who already have set up a Cultural Transformation Board, which has the same principle of our Guilds, so a new meeting has been arranged to see how we can work with this group. They have already created an Arts Award portfolio, which is similar to our employability passport Education and Young Peoples’ Services Skills and Employability Service with the arts Council England. Inspire is a school based learning programme which they have created to provide opportunities for students to learn outside of schools. Developing creative and leadership skills and introducing them to the world of work. Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing - We are currently talking to different training providers to under the level of training available and to under the issues around recruitment and how we can address this and move this guild forward, with the relevant employers involved. Partners, schools, colleges and training providers have been emailed to send Education and Young Peoples’ Services Skills and Employability Service some resources and links to add on the website as agreed at the first meeting. We have had an offer of support from Paul Winter at Wirebelt to help drive this guild forward. The Engineering and Construction event take place at Detling County show ground with a lower than expected turn out from the schools and the reasons why are being reviewed by Toni Clarke. A meeting has taken place with Greenwich University about degree level apprenticeships and how this guild could link together. Guy Robinson who is our new Employability Development Officer has now started and will be tasked with driving this guild forward; we are due to attend the next ECITB forum to start this process. The land based and environmental sector - The third Land Based & Environmental Guild meeting took place on 30th June at Thanet Skills Studio. So far the meetings have been school/provider heavy so the next meeting will include employers like Thanet Earth and organisations Like LANTRA, Produced in Kent and the Kent Agricultural Society. We will be developing the Kent PLC website as a host page for all resources and linking this with the National Farmers Union youth magazine which promotes the sector to school students. Life Science - we are currently working with Kate from Pfizer’s who is part of the BioGateway which was launched at the end of June http://biogateway.co.uk/. Recently we had a meeting with Canterbury Christchurch around developing a degree level apprenticeship in life sciences, so are looking at how we can take this forward and have made links with East Kent College. A meeting has taken place with East Kent College, Canterbury Christchurch University and Pfizer’s to discuss setting up a degree level apprenticeship. All parties expressed an interest in working together to set up a guild in life sciences. Vicki Main will now arrange further meeting to agree how we can develop and move this forward, the next meeting has been booked for mid-December. Healthcare We have been initial discussions with NHS about our Health & Social Care guild and Centre of Excellence, which is currently being reviewed to identify a clear action plan.
