Police and schools in the city are committed to working together to protect our young people from becoming victims of knife and weapons crime. We use a range of tactics including educational inputs and in-school searches to ensure that students are well- informed about the consequences of carrying weapons, and identify those that continue to do so. It is important that the police, schools and families work together to protect young people. To do this, parents must be aware of the warning signs and talk to children about carrying weapons. The consequences of being found in possession of a knife are serious and long lasting, affecting education, employment and travel opportunities, but most crucially, life. Some young people carry weapons because they feel it will provide protection or increase the respect they are given by their friends, but the sad fact is that they are more likely to become victims of serious violence. Parents should also be aware that girls sometimes carry or store weapons for their boyfriends or other male friends because they believe they are less likely to be stopped by the police. Their reasons are often misguided loyalty or love, but it is still a crime if they are caught carrying a knife or other weapon. We have also included the total number of pupils in the school so you can gauge its size. You’ll see how oversubscribed a school is by how many parents had named a school as one of their five preferences on their application form and how many of these had placed it as their first preference. Catchment area Some comprehensive schools have a catchment area consisting of parishes, district or county boundaries. Some schools will give priority for admission to those children living within their catchment area. If you live in Gloucestershire and are over 3 miles from your child’s catchment school they may be entitled to school transport provided by the Local Authority. Oversubscription criteria If a school receives more preferences than places available, the admission authority will place all children in the order in which they could be considered for a place. This will strictly follow the priority order of their oversubscription criteria. Although parents have the right to express a preference for the school that they wish their child to attend, there is no guarantee of a place being offered at their preferred school. It is the County Council’s policy to try and meet parents’ wishes where possible, however in some cases there may be more applications for a particular school than there are places available. Admission to oversubscribed community and voluntary controlled schools are determined by the oversubscription criteria detailed below. Oversubscription Criteria If the total number of preferences for admission to a school exceeds the school’s Published Admission Number (PAN), the following order of priority is used to allocate the available places. Outreach Residential Activities 2017/18 2017/18 RESIDENTIAL ACTIVITY REPORT: 16 DECEMBER 2018 University of Gloucestershire Widening Participation and Outreach - Data & Evaluation Officer, Partnerships Manager 1 Residential Report Outreach and Widening Participation Team, University of Gloucestershire Each year, the Outreach team organises and delivers two separate Residential Events for Year 10 and Year 12 students with the intention of providing an intensive experience on a university campus. The residential activities aim to build higher education (HE) knowledge to enable young people to make an informed decision about their future. Students are provided with an opportunity to learn more about the subjects that are available and the processes required to apply for HE. It is hoped that students will increase their self-confidence in their ability to attend higher education and develop a sense of belonging at university, as well as reduce barriers to participate in higher education. Both residentials take place over a four day period, with the first day allowing time and space for students to settle in and socialise with each other and the summer school staff. Student Ambassadors live residentially for the duration of each summer school, supporting the running of the events and providing their own insights into university life and their routes to higher education. Students who attend the Year 10 residential take part in a wider range of academic taster sessions while Year 12 students choose a subject strand to follow. This is so that they can try a range of courses within an Academic School to provide more insight into which course they might choose to study in the future. -

Sharing Innovative Approaches to Delivering 16-19 Study Programme Principles Banbury and Bicester College Enterprise and Employability “At the heart of our model for Study Programmes is the development of employability skills through the learning company concept.” Rose Turner, Principal Banbury and Bicester College is part of Activate Learning1, a group which combines secondary, further and higher education along with workforce training, commercial business and social enterprise. The Activate Learning group was formed in September 2013, following the merger of Oxford and Cherwell Valley College, and Reading College in 2010. The group comprises Banbury and Bicester College, City of Oxford College, Reading College and Activate Enterprise. Activate Learning has a chief executive officer; each college has a principal and Activate Enterprise a director. In 2012/13 the three colleges recruited around 14,500 learners, two thirds of whom were adults on part-time courses. Most learners, currently, are on foundation and intermediate programmes and the group have around 1,800 apprentices in five subject areas. Oxfordshire and Berkshire are affluent counties with rates of unemployment below national averages. However, across both counties, there are areas of educational and social deprivation and the profile of learners attending the colleges reflects this. GCSE attainment in local secondary schools is broadly at, or just below, national averages, and many learners come to study and train at the colleges with attainment below national averages. The proportion of the population of Oxfordshire and Berkshire from minority ethnic backgrounds varies from around 25% in Reading to below 5% in Banbury and Bicester. However, the proportion of learners from minority ethnic backgrounds in the colleges matches or exceeds these local proportions. -

Tracking Progression: 2008 Year 11 school leavers going into Higher Education in 2010 Staffordshire & Stoke-on-Trent March 2011 Introduction Analysis of entry to Higher Education (HE) by Local Authority, district and mainstream, maintained high school This report shows the proportion of all 2008 Year 11 high school students who went on to enter Higher Education (HE) at age 18 in 2010 (i.e. after two years of further education). Figures include those who have an unconditional place offer and are taking a 'gap year'. This study includes those who have entered HE from both the school and college sectors. The report sub-divides the Year 11 cohort into quintiles based on where they live. So Quintile 1 represents those areas in the County/City that are among the 20% most deprived in the country and identifies how many learners in the cohort come from this quintile, and how many of those subsequently applied to higher education. Quintile 5 represents those from areas in the 20% least deprived in the country. The deprivation of an area is based on the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) which is described below (see*). To provide some comparison year on year, data for 2008 entry to HE has been included in the analysis. * The Index of Multiple Deprivation 2007 (IMD 2007) is based on the small area of geography known as Lower Super Output Areas (LSOAs). LSOAs have a population between 1,000 and 3,000 people, with an average of 1,500 people. In most cases, these are smaller than wards, thus allowing the identification of small pockets of deprivation.
