The Hunts Herald News About the Huntingdonshire County Cricket Club Edition 5, Spring 2011 The Hunts Herald News about the Huntingdonshire County Cricket Club Edition 5, Spring 2011 Gary Whitbread 1st July 1957- 10th January 2011 The County Club was very shocked and saddened when Chairman Gary Whitbread passed away peacefully in Addenbrookes Hospital on Monday 10th January 2011 after a bravely borne illness. Gary was 53 and had been Chairman for six years prior to which he had been Vice Chairman, Manager and of course player. He was a very well known sporting figure in the District having played cricket for Cambridgeshire, Huntingdonshire, Hatley, Papworth and Kimbolton as well as football for St Neots Town and Eynesbury Rovers. Apart from being current Chairman of the County Club he was a member of the over 50’s County eleven and the Club representative on the Huntingdonshire County Cricket Board. He left a wife Tammy, son Ben and daughter Abbie as well as two grandchildren Finley and Niamh. He was a very devoted family man, kind generous and extremely gregarious and he nurtured a special interest in encouraging youngsters in both football and cricket spending some of his time as the goalkeeping coach at Eynesbury as well as attending the County U19 cricket fixtures. His long association with Huntingdonshire cricket began with schools cricket before going on to play for the full County side 64 times between 1979 and 2002. He also made several appearances for Cambridgeshire in the Minor Counties competition. Over 500 family members, friends, cricketers, footballers and work colleagues attended Gary’s funeral at St.Neots Parish Church on Friday 28 January. It is a measure of the respect people had for Gary that the funeral attendance exceeded any previous funeral service. conducted by the vicar at St.Neots. John Pashler 5th August 1921 - 11th February 2011 Former Huntingdonshire opening bat, John Pashler has died at the age of 89. Arthur John Pashler was born at Higham Ferrars and played 22 matches for Hunts with a top score of 101 not out against Cambridgeshire in 1950. He also played a minor county championship match for Cambridgeshire against Essex 2nd XI in 1953. John’s club cricket was with Huntingdon where he opened the batting and bowled slow left-arm orthodox for many years. The Hunts Herald 2010 Summary By John Walker U25 team The U25 team deservedly take the headlines in the 2010 season review because for only the second time in the history of the competition Huntingdonshire U25 side were the champions of the East of England Development competition. Playing against one first class County (Essex) and four Minor Counties the County consistently produces a competitive Development side. The competition has been won in recent years by each of the Counties making it a very interesting and challenging competition. Hunts last won this title in 2003. The outstanding player for Huntingdonshire this season was batsman Michael Cafferkey who in his five innings scored 169, 54, 111, 111 again, and 89. This makes a total of 534 runs at an average of 106.8. The most successful bowler with seven wickets was Trent Pascoe followed by skipper David McCallum and James Cowan with five apiece. The season began with a magnificent 223 runs victory over last seasons’ champions Lincolnshire. It was based around the biggest ever stand by the County in the competition as Michael Cafferkey (169) and Alan Burton (115) posted 304 for their first wicket stand. Lincolnshire were bowled out for 146 in just 22 overs with Jon Carpenter mopping up the inning to finish with three wickets for no runs. A dip in form saw Suffolk beat Hunts in the second match despite good innings’ from Michael Cafferkey (54) and David Humphrey (60). However the total of 182 was not enough to bother the visitors who won by 6 wickets. The third match away in Norfolk saw skipper David McCallum collect 4 for 45 as the home team were restricted to 232 for 8 and Hunts reached their winning target with more than five overs to spare thanks to Michael Cafferkey’s second century of the season and a determined 42 from David Clarke. Another defeat followed at the hands of Essex in a topsy-turvy season when no team really dominated. Hunts’ 244 for 9 included Michael Cafferkey’s 111 and David Clarke’s 73 but Essex had their centurion in Nick Browne who carried his bat for 103 in their victory by three wickets. And so to the final match of the series with both Hunts and Cambs aware that a victory would enable them to claim the title. Sadly the match was rain affected and the Hunts total of 242 for 7 featuring Michael Cafferkey’s 89 and Harry Chappell’s 67 set Cambs a target of almost five an over as the weather closed in. The Hunts attack saw Trent Pascoe and Adam Rendall give nothing away and when the rain did arrive in the eleventh over Cambs were only scoring at fractionally over two runs an over and so Hunts were declared winners on run rate. Twenty players featured in Hunts’ five matches with only Michael Cafferkey and Trent Pascoe available for every match. It was a great squad performance with all of their opponents including a majority of players who compete regularly at Premier Division level cricket or better. Manager Hedley Swannell can be very proud of his side’s 2010 campaign. The first match against the RAF saw the side post 220 all out in their innings with Michael Cafferkey contributing 78. The match winners were the bowlers who gave very little away and bowled their visitors out 67 runs short of their target. Skipper David McCallum finished with 3 for 25 with James Cowan and The Hunts Herald 2010 Summary Continued from page 2… James Sykes each picking up a couple of wickets. The second match against a very strong Northamptonshire XI saw some consistent batting by Hunts to total 222 all out with Dhanushka De Saram top scoring with 74. However Zac Harvey (105) and Lee Andrews (61 not out) added well over 100 for the third wicket to see the visitors to victory by seven wickets. The talented Surrey Academy were the next opponents and Michael Cafferkey (123 not out) and Taylor West (60) steered Hunts to a very respectable 251 for 5 but the Surrey reply saw Anthony Alleyne (the son of a famous father) produce a powerful 116 not out in just 89 balls with 70 of his runs coming in boundaries and this steered the visitors to a victory by seven wickets. The next visitors’ were a full strength Army side and some tight bowling by Hunts restricted the visitors to 231 for 7 wickets. The Hunts’ reply was once again spearheaded by Michael Cafferkey whose 63 was well supported by the other batsmen and the home side ran out winners by five wickets with almost twelve overs to spare. Perhaps the best performance of the season came in the home match against the Middlesex Academy. The visitors posted 264 for 5 and at 96 for 5 in their reply Hunts looked a beaten side. But then Ashley Rodgers (69) – his best ever score for the County Senior side and skipper Paul Swannell with 102 not out pulled the side round to an improbable victory. It was his first ever senior century for the County and after more than a decade of service it is a well deserved accolade. The season ended with the annual tour to Northumberland where Hunts lost narrowly in a two day two innings match. Michael Cafferkey got a half century in the first innings but the Hunts star was skipper Davis McCallum who returned the best bowling return of the season with 5 for 83. The above photo, from the Illustrated War News of September 1915, exposes how many cameras of that era were unsuited to action shots, but the caption suggests another reason, that the photographer realised the batsman had an eye on hitting the ball into his stomach! For this mid-season edition, we are also producing some physical copies so keep your eyes out for those! As you can read about in here, it’s been a hectic social calendar so far this season helped by England’s success in the World Cup. There’s certainly been lots happening and the best thing for me is that we’ve had a much wider range of our members all getting more involved in the various events. There’s nothing better than seeing the clubhouse being well used and enjoyed by so many people, and my thanks go to all of those who have worked hard to make these events happen. On the playing side, there’s everything to play for in the second half of the season at both ends of the table! There’s a great summary of the story so far for all of our league teams, and let’s hope we can get some more wins under our belt in the coming weeks.

The 2009 / 2010 season was a positive step forward for developing a long term playing group that will see our Club be competitively consistent and therefore giving the entire group an opportunity to develop skills for a higher level. The Club‟s initiative to support Nick Jewells‟ appointment as Captain Coach with a suitably skilled panel of coaches has proven invaluable in developing our players for the future, having a wealth of first class knowledge and general cricket experience within the panel is unequalled in Premier cricket and the benefits, no doubt, will be rewarded by their continuous improvement. While the provision of a panel of coaches is broadly beneficial the leadership, commitment and professional preparation of the players by Nick has been outstanding and under his guidance will set a foundation and standard of excellence for this Club for many years.
