The above photo, from the Illustrated War News of September 1915, exposes how many cameras of that era were unsuited to action shots, but the caption suggests another reason, that the photographer realised the batsman had an eye on hitting the ball into his stomach! Whatever, it is a seasonal frontispiece and several items inside mention cricket. The Hunts Herald News about the Huntingdonshire County Cricket Club Edition 5, Spring 2011 Gary Whitbread 1st July 1957- 10th January 2011 The County Club was very shocked and saddened when Chairman Gary Whitbread passed away peacefully in Addenbrookes Hospital on Monday 10th January 2011 after a bravely borne illness. Gary was 53 and had been Chairman for six years prior to which he had been Vice Chairman, Manager and of course player. He was a very well known sporting figure in the District having played cricket for Cambridgeshire, Huntingdonshire, Hatley, Papworth and Kimbolton as well as football for St Neots Town and Eynesbury Rovers. Apart from being current Chairman of the County Club he was a member of the over 50’s County eleven and the Club representative on the Huntingdonshire County Cricket Board. He left a wife Tammy, son Ben and daughter Abbie as well as two grandchildren Finley and Niamh. He was a very devoted family man, kind generous and extremely gregarious and he nurtured a special interest in encouraging youngsters in both football and cricket spending some of his time as the goalkeeping coach at Eynesbury as well as attending the County U19 cricket fixtures. His long association with Huntingdonshire cricket began with schools cricket before going on to play for the full County side 64 times between 1979 and 2002. He also made several appearances for Cambridgeshire in the Minor Counties competition. Over 500 family members, friends, cricketers, footballers and work colleagues attended Gary’s funeral at St.Neots Parish Church on Friday 28 January.

The 2009 / 2010 season was a positive step forward for developing a long term playing group that will see our Club be competitively consistent and therefore giving the entire group an opportunity to develop skills for a higher level. The Club‟s initiative to support Nick Jewells‟ appointment as Captain Coach with a suitably skilled panel of coaches has proven invaluable in developing our players for the future, having a wealth of first class knowledge and general cricket experience within the panel is unequalled in Premier cricket and the benefits, no doubt, will be rewarded by their continuous improvement. While the provision of a panel of coaches is broadly beneficial the leadership, commitment and professional preparation of the players by Nick has been outstanding and under his guidance will set a foundation and standard of excellence for this Club for many years.

Since those days many changes have occurred, including the Chairman himself, who was moved on to the role of newly created President some 10 years ago. It is from that exalted, if undeserved position, that I can see how well the club has flourished and continues to flourish under the current chairman and his wonderfully supportive committee. The fixture card has changed. Long-standing games against Thoresby Park, Follifoot and Ben Rhydding are no more, but have been replaced by equally attractive fixtures. Playing members, particularly younger ones, have increased and I have to admit that since ‘our day’ the standard of fielding has greatly improved. Indeed, the club these days often wins more matches than it loses (what does Andy Shires think about that?). Technology has finally arrived.

  • The Hunts Herald
Edition 7 Spring 2012 The Hunts Herald News about the Huntingdonshire County Cricket Club The Season Ahead After last years successful season we are looking forward to more success this season. A strong list of opponents for the senior team means that we will have to play very well again, but it is really good to see that we are playing teams from three first counties again. An exiting new development is that we are scheduled to have a two day game against Middlesex Academy. Once again almost all our games are at home, probably because the first class counties find that easier to arrange. The Development team are playing the usual list of suspects, with the Norfolk game being part of their Cricket Festival. V The Under 19s have a very restricted list this year, and the tournament that they play in has been threatened by the Hedley Swannell withdrawal of Essex. V Hopefully next season a replacement will be found. Our team manger is once again Hedley Swannell, with the Captain being Paul Swannell. Team scorer will once again be John Paul Swannell Walker. Good luck to them all. Due to the poor turn out at last year’s member’s tea (one member) I suspect that we will give it a miss this year, unless I hear howls of protest, in which case we will re-instate it. Inside this issue is a page highlighting the success John Walker of Huntingdonshire’s Youth Development, with four players who have played for the HCCC now being on the books of first class counties.
