This was an Under-16 match. also noted in Cricket 1900 page 131, and in the obituary of JH Kelsey in The Cricketer Annual 1945-46, page 75. Both of these sources note that Ford and Kelsey took ten wickets each. However, The Reptonian only says that they shared the wickets (i.e. not necessarily equally), ‘with absurd analyses’.

The match was played before declarations were permitted under the Laws. Nevertheless, The Reptonian says that “with the score at 312 they [Ford and Kelsey] retired … and allowed Mr Gould’s to … bat”.

Source: Brisbane Courier 2 February 1891 (first innings); The Queenslander 14 February 1891 (second innings). A full scorecard of Stanley (1), and some other details, are given on pp 71-72 of Ken Piesse’s Extraordinary book of Australian cricket; in the event of differences, the contemporary sources have been preferred. Close of play, Day 1: Stanley (1) 26-8 It is not clear whether 4-ball or 6-ball overs were used. The Queenslander gives only the number of balls bowled by each bowler in the two second innings; the figures for the Albert innings (as shown here) suggest 4-ball overs. In any case, the number of maidens for each bowler in Albert (2) looks improbable. Silvester took a hat-trick for Albert in Stanley (1). Kitchen was dismissed ‘hit wicket’ in both Albert innings. Arthur Coningham (Test cricketer) was the star of the first day, but did not appear for the second. The non-appearance of several players for the second day of play caused considerable dissatisfaction. The match, between two Brisbane club sides, was for the Aitchison Ale Trophy.

The number of wickets given in the South analyses in the SMH do not match the number given to each bowler in the scorecard (the analysis shows Cummins 1 wicket, Grainger 2 and Hulm 2) – the scorecard figures have been preferred, as they account for all 9 bowlers’ wickets, whereas the figures in the paper’s analyses only add up to 8 wickets). Source: Cricket 1901 pp 387-388. Also picked up later by various national newspapers, though with less detail. But strangely, not noted at all in the Eastbourne Gazette, and hardly mentioned in the Eastbourne Chronicle (in which the only reference, on 9 September 1901, is picked up from “a London paper of Tuesday [4 Sept]”).

Mabel Bryant, hockey international, as well as making the highest-ever score to date by a female cricketer and taking five wickets in each innings (reportedly), is also said to have taken two catches and two stumpings. Her innings of 224* is said to have lasted 2¼ hours. Her position in the order is not known.

It is reported [see Tweet to ACS around late August 2020] that when speaking of this match some years later, Miss Bryant – daughter of the vicar of St Leonard’s - said that she was playing for the Eastbourne Ladies against a team of visitors [rather than vice versa], and that she took “all the ten wickets of our opponents” [rather than five in each innings].

It is not known whether this was an all-female match or a mixed match, nor in which order the teams batted. If they did at all. 16

From the names of the teams, it may be surmised that this was a match between very young children, all at the same school or other establishment/organisation.

The successful bowler is sometimes named as Keneth, but Keveth is the more frequent spelling. (Keveth is an established surname in Cornwall.) His figures – which included two hat-tricks - have been derived from the fact that most newspapers reported that the St Breward innings lasted 15 balls, but three overs is also given in some sources.

The Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry Depot was based at Bodmin.

Pawson and Gainsford added 144* for the tenth wicket to secure the victory for Oundle School, and by the end of the match their stand was worth 161* (as stated by Gross). But note that this was not a partnership for the last wicket.

Guy Bernard Gainsford, b 16.4.1903 (d. 26.2.1938); Leonard Baden Pawson, b 31.8.1900 (d. 6.1.1963).

The Laxtonian says that the stand between Selwyn-Payne and French was for the sixth wicket, but from the batting order it was for the seventh.

The spelling ‘McHwaithe’ is given in both occurrences in The Laxtonian, but no-one of that surname was recorded in the UK census of 1911, or anywhere else in ancestry.co.uk. ‘McIlwraith[e]’ would seem more likely, but no Sergeant of that name has been traced in online military records. 40

ESPNcricinfo records that MC McConnell performed three hat-tricks in an innings for Laxton House in 1939. This is not noted at any point in The Laxtonian, which also makes no comment regarding McConnell’s all-ten in this match against Bramston House. However, if he did take three hat-tricks in a house match in 1939, then from the summary scores in the school magazine this is the only match in which he could have done so.

Both in its cricket section and elsewhere, The Laxtonian consistently refers to him as MF McConnell and not MC McConnell.

13 players are listed in the magazine as appearing for each of these houses in the house competition in 1939, but it is not known who were the 11s in this particular match. The 13s are as follows: Laxton House: JD Butler (capt), GA Cooper, JW Eckhard, LB Gabb, ABW Illius, MF McConnell, JG Rider, PS Sykes, GC Wallace, NR Waterfield, DH Whiffen, HD Williams, and MH Williams. Bramston House: DJ Bevan (capt), MVD Champness, GDI Cordon, MJ Durrant, JO Ellor, DC Fontannaz, OG Griffith, GW Hetherington, DJ Lemon, PR Ratcliffe, DW Townshend, PE Townshend, and PH Turvey.

Ceylon v Holkar CA 1947/48 3 Venue Ceylon Date 1947/48 season Result Toss Umpires

In an item on page 118 of Jonathan Rice’s Curiosities of cricket it is recorded that wicket-keeper KV Bhandarkar recorded a hat-trick of stumpings for Holkar in this match. No other details are given.

Holkar played five matches against Ceylon between 10 and 24 April 1948. The first four, all at Colombo, were well reported in the Indian Express, and there is no scope for an all-stumped hat-trick to have been recorded in any of them. One of the four included a hat-trick by MM Jagdale, but the dismissals went ct-ct-st. The fifth match, at Galle, on 23-24 April was not reported by the Express, so further investigation of Ceylonese newspapers is needed to establish whether this included an all-stumped hat-trick (CA only has a potted scorecard).

These and other more local NSW papers confirm that 14-year-old Grant le Huray scored 267* in 97 minutes, and took 7/24, including a hat- trick, in the Abbotsford innings. His innings included 58 fours, and was played in the Western Suburbs D Grade of the NSW Churches Union competition. (Sixes are not allowed in this competition.) In an email dated 28 May 2020, Sreeram B Iyer passed on the fact that the obituary of PG (‘Nana’) Joshi in Indian Cricket 1987 says that in a match in the Poona Summer League in 1957/58 he ‘had a hand in all ten dismissals’.

This could, of course, have included one or more run-outs.

The match is reported in the Times of India on 16 May 1958 in the following terms:

“Poona 13 May – Nana Joshi, India’s former Test wicket-keeper, struck brilliant form behind the stumps in the summer cricket league of the Poona District Association. He had a hand in the dismissal of all the ten batsmen. Joshi, who helped YMCA to an outright victory over Tayabia Cricket Club, showed perfect understanding with the YMCA bowlers DG Chowdhury, a former Maharashtra star, and Subash Bhambure … Joshi also shoed good form with the bat when hitting up an unbeaten 68 [sic] out of the total of 117 runs.”

The summarised scores of the match are then given as above (including Joshi scoring 62 rather than 68). There is no full scorecard, and no explicit mention in the report that all the dismissals were in the same innings, or how many of them were caught, stumped, or run out (but note that the bowling figures as given do not allow for run- outs in either Tayabia innings).

East Kew Presbyterians v Holy Trinity 1962/63 2 Venue Melbourne Date 1962/63 season Result Toss Umpires

According to an item on pages 90-91 of Ken Piesse’s Extraordinary book of Australian cricket, East Kew Methodists were 485-0 at the end of the first day of this match. 15-year-old Colin Cust opened and was not out at close of play; his opening partner John Stint retired hurt on 102* with the score at 298-0. The name of the third batsman in the partnership is not stated.

The book records that Cust made 294* in all, with 53 fours and two sixes. If this was all made out of 485, the third batsman can have scored no more than 89*. Cricket Quarterly (vol 1 no. 2 pp 62-63) records that his innings lasted 150 minutes (reaching 100 in 58 minutes and 200 in 112). If correct, this means that the team’s runs in the innings were made at a rate of over three per minute.

It is not known if the match extended into a second day’s play, and thus whether or not the figure of 485 was the final size of the partnership.

The match is not reported in any newspaper in Trove. It was stated to be the first match of the season in Melbourne’s Eastern Suburban Churches competition. Whether all the players were juniors is not known.

The venue is stated to be Moorabbin Park, and there is a venue of that name in the town of Moorabbin, Victoria. But the item in CQ says that this was a match in Federal District junior cricket, which suggests that the venue may have been at or near Canberra. This needs further investigation.

No further information is currently to hand. The feat is not mentioned in any newspaper currently (June 2020) in Trove, where one of the papers covering the relevant dates is the Canberra Times – which may or may not be significant.

However, no such occurrence is recorded in the pages of the Holmfirth Express for 1974. The paper gives full scorecards of several matches played by both sides, but does not record any meeting of the two. They played in different leagues – Holmfirth in the Huddersfield League and Holmbridge in the Central League.

Perhaps this wasn’t a First XI fixture? – but you’d still expect such an event to be recorded in the paper serving the immediate local area.

This occurrence is not recorded in any newspaper currently (March 2020) in the BNA. It has not yet been sought in the pages of The Cricketer.

It is however mentioned on page 68 of Kersi Meher-Homji’s Out for a duck, where it says that the match was in the Huddersfield Junior League, and that it was reported in the Australian and the Daily Telegraph (Sydney) of 10 June 1974, which narrows down the date of the match. The details of the play and players as given here are taken from this source. The successful bowlers were Paul Hartley and Ashley Mills; it was Mills who bowled the wide, so between them they were responsible for all the runs and all the wickets in the match.

This was an early-season friendly match. Ashdown Forest had only ten men, though according to the report in the Mail on Sunday the captain “was fruitlessly phoning for another batsman” by the time the fifth wicket went down.

The Mill Park innings is referred to in the scorecard as ‘cc’ rather than ‘dec’. This same abbreviation is used for some other innings too – it may mean ‘compulsorily closed’, but that is not crystal clear.

Although no bowling details are given in the source, it is stated that the Mill Park innings lasted 68 overs, and that of South Morang 46 overs.

This was a match in the Diamond Valley Cricket Association E Grade.

It may be assumed that the Wayanad side was an under-19 women’s side. These two women’s sides had met in the Kerala CA Women’s Inter-District U-19 Tournament in 2016/17 (scorecard on Cricket Archive).

Veekshitha and Chaitra batted at nos 1 and 2 for Kasaragod. Loordh’s figure of three wickets is a minimum figure. All 11 players in the Kasaragod team were out ‘bowled’. The Wayanad innings lasted 1 over.

‘Akshatha’ and ‘Chaitra’ may well be CA players Akshitha and Chaithra, both of whom played for Kasaragod U-19 women in 2017.

Birkenhead’s opening partnership of 455 is a new record for the first wicket in any match in New Zealand. Sethi (109 balls) hit 14 fours; Jasmeet Singh (149 balls) hit 28 fours and 25 sixes.

The scorecard on crichq names 12 players for Birkenhead (the other being ‘Unknown’), and 13 for Grafton (the others being J Norman and Scott). It is presumed that this was scheduled as a 12 or 13-a-side match, with only 11 batting and fielding for each side.

This was a 45-over match in Round 1 of the 4th Grade limited-overs championship of Auckland Cricket. 93

Extras Total Fall

Source: The Cricketer 16 June 1923, on page 8, reports as follows:

[A correspondent writes] ‘Does the making of six catches by the same fielder, not a wicket-keeper, in one innings create a record?’ The question is answered by a letter written 22 years ago [1901] by the late Mr FG Harding, a veteran member of the old Islington Albion CC, who wrote: ‘This reminded me of an unique occurrence which took place in a match in which I played. One of the bowlers got all the ten wickets, which were caught by the same man, the bowler at the other end, at short slip.’ Unfortunately Mr Harding, who was a well-known figure in the cricket world years ago, and – it may be well to add – a truthful man, did not give the title and date of the game referred to. The score is not to be found in Scores and Biographies, or any of the sporting newspapers. It is very likely that it was a match played by the Islington Albion CC. Mr Harding was born in 1830 and died in 1914.’

Credible? More evidence needed. No such instance has been traced in a trawl through the Islington Gazette in the BNA between 1860 and 1890.

In an email dated 30 May 2020, Allan Miller mentioned an instance “20-25 years ago” in PNG when a fielder made 8 catches in an innings. He believes he read this in an Australian cricket magazine of the time, but can recall no further details.

An email to Ken Piesse – believed to have been the editor of the magazine in question – has produced no response.
