The Berlin Olympics: Sports, Anti-Semitism, and Propaganda in Nazi Germany Abstract The aN zis utilized the Berlin Olympics of 1936 as anti-Semitic propaganda within their racial ideology. When the Nazis took power in 1933 they immediately sought to coordinate all aspects of German life, including sports. The process of coordination was designed to Aryanize sport by excluding non-Aryans and promoting sport as a means to prepare for military training. The 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin became the ideal platform for Hitler and the Nazis to display the physical superiority of the Aryan race. However, the exclusion of non-Aryans prompted a boycott debate that threatened Berlin’s position as host.

This thesis examines Imperial, Weimar, and Nazi Ger- many's attempt to use the Berlin Olympic Games to bring its citizens together in national consciousness and simultane- ously enhance Germany's position in the international com- munity. The sources include official documents issued by both the German and American Olympic Committees as well as newspaper reports of the Olympic proceedings. This eight chapter thesis discusses chronologically the beginnings of the Olympic movement in Imperial Germany, its growth during the Weimar and Nazi periods, and its culmination in the 1936 Berlin Games. Each German government built and improved upon the previous government's Olympic experiences with the National Socialist regime of Adolf Hitler reaping the benefits of forty years of German Olympic participation and preparation. He was a planner and principal organizer of the Berlin Games. He served to the Olympic movement from the 1912 Stockholm Games until the year of his death. He was an energetic sports educator and traveled all around the world for consulting to various countries about sports. The purpose of this study was to examine Carl Diem‘s life and his creative projects about sport and the Olympics. The subject was searched based upon the literature. As a result, it could be said that Carl Diem is one of the most important people in German sport history and in the Olympic history. Key Words: Olympics, German Sports.     The 1936 Berlin Olympics was the turning point for the politicization of sport 10.1 HASS Mrs Casserly Heather Bytheway Word Count – 1,999 "Sport is prostituted when sport loses its independent and democratic character and becomes a political institution”1 These are the words of the Committee on Fair Play in Sports, and could not more accurately describe the negative impacts of the politicization of sports. Prior to 1936, the Olympics remained separate from politics, and was a place where many countries could unite and partake in friendly competition; however, with the rise of Nazism in Germany and growing tension across the western world, the 1936 Olympics became the turning point for the politicization of sport. Past Olympics had never been so affected by propaganda, antisemitism, boycott calls, and racial discrimination, and to this day the changes to the nature of global sport are still visible. In 1931 the International Olympic Committee (IOC) awarded hosting rights for the 1936 Olympics to Germany, which was then under the Weimar Republic.2 After Germany had previously been banned from the 1920 and 1924 Olympics due to being held responsible for World War I, the move was seen as “an opportunity to welcome Germany back into the international community…”3 In 1933 the Nazi party gained power after the President of the German Reich, Paul von Hindenburg appointed Adolf Hitler to Chancellor. 4 Hitler soon took on emergency dictatorial powers, transforming the once democratic Germany to a fascist, authoritarian state. 5 When Hitler came to power, he inherited something he didn’t really want, the Olympics, 6 yet his Minister for Propaganda, Dr.
