  • Birkenhead-House-Wine-List
Welcome to the wine list of Birkenhead House. Having spent much of my working life involved with wine, I have tried to create a wine list that has a true representation from the wines in South Africa and balanced with wines of both New World and the Old World in style, providing wines to suit most tastes and palates. I am often asked what my favourite wine is and my answer would be that I really do not have one. There are so many great wines made in South Africa that it depends upon the occasion, what I am eating, the time of year but I think most importantly the company I’m in. I have selected a range of House wines from our surrounding areas to offer a variety of grape types to suit many dishes, which are all available by the glass or bottle. This wine list is a work in progress and hopefully will never be finished. Please also note that some of the vintages offered are rare and we might not carry large quantities. If you have the time look through the list there are some fantastic wines from both individual family producers to large winemaking companies. They all have their place on our list and I have tasted them all. If you would like to talk about a particular wine or need some help selecting, please feel free to ask. However I am a great believer in “Drink what you like, when you like.” Wine is all part of the occasion, the more you enjoy what we have to offer at Birkenhead House the better the wine will taste.

Now talking about wines, the Wine and sprit association of the Great Britain has sponsored the following definition of Wine ―Wine is an alcoholic beverage obtained from the fermentation of the juice of freshly gathered grapes. Fermentation is conducted in the district of origin according to local customs and traditions. To bear the name Wine, the product must come only from grapes. If made from other fruits; the fruit name must be put before the tern Wine eg. Blackberry Wine, Apricot Wine, Fig Wine. Only a small part of the world is Wine producing. This is because the grape will only provide juice of the quality required for conversion into consumable Wine where two climatic conditions prevail. 1. Sufficient sun-shine to ripen the grape 2. Winters that are moderate yet sufficiently cool to give the Wine a chance to rest and restore its strength for the growing and fruiting season.

Volume 21(4), 25- 29, 2017 JOURNAL of Horticulture, Forestry and Biotechnology www.journal-hfb.usab-tm.ro Research on obtaining flavoured wines based on house wine Dobrei Alina Georgeta1, Dobrei A.1*, Boc Andrașescu R.1, Nistor Eleonora1, Mălăescu Mihaela1, Drăgunescu Anca1 1Banat’s University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine “King Michael I of Romania” from Timisoara, Faculty of Horticulture and Forestry, Calea Aradului 119, 300645 Timisoara, Romania. *Coresponding author. Email: [email protected] Abstract The research was carried out in 2017, in the laboratory of the Key words Oenology discipline of Timisoara Faculty of Horticulture and Forestry. Three varieties of wine were studied, each constituting a blend, as follows: 1. White flavoured wine, aromatic wine – Mustoasă de Măderat and Muscat Ottonel blend; 2. Rose Wine – herbs, sugar syrup, alcohol Muscat Ottonel and Muscat de Hamburg blend; 3. Red Wine – Merlot and Burgund blend. The alcohol content of the wine samples was measured, and for each of the three varieties of wine an aromatic herb extract was prepared, each consisting of the same sample of wine distillate but with different aromatic herb recipes. The white wine - Mustoasă de Măderat and Muscat Ottonel blend had an alcohol content of 12.5%, the Rose Wine - Muscat Ottonel and Muscat de Hamburg blend contained 10.5% alcohol, and the Red Wine Merlot and Burgund blend - 14% alcohol. In order to obtain the aromatic herbs extract, a different time interval was required, depending on the intensity of the aromatic compounds of the plants or the dried fruits that had entered the composition.

  • Tasting Notes Nov 2018 Pick-Up Festive Holiday Wines
Tasting Notes Nov 2018 Pick-up Festive Holiday Wines Welcome to your November 2018 Smart Wine Club pickup. This will be our second annual holiday mixed case, exploring an assortment of festive wines. My choices include a sparkling and some bottles that I think will work well at a cocktail party or with your holiday meals. All are perfect options for a hostess gift, and I’ve tried to find bottles that not only taste great but look great too! If you do end up loving one of these and want to make it your “holiday house wine” this season, just call or email me – I’d be happy to help with a special order. If you’d like to add an extra bag or two, we can help you with that – a Smart Wine Club mixed tote of wine makes a wonderful gift for a favorite friend or special client. If you’d like to do this as a gift, of course we can provide tasting notes without pricing! I wish you joyous holidays over the next couple months. Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas from me, and best wishes for whichever celebrations you and your family enjoy. I hope you will enjoy sharing these wines with your nearest and dearest friends and family, and I hope that they will add to the happiness of each occasion. - 2014 Antech Crémant de Limoux Rosé “Cuvée Emotion”, Limoux, France – Did you know that the region of Limoux is the birthplace of sparkling wine? They’ve been making it there since 1544, long before Dom Perignon starting making bubbles in Champagne! Antech (pronounced an-tesh) always produces this wine in the natural style, with zero dosage (added sugar).
