WINERY NAME: CONTRADE WINERY LOCATION: Masseria Li Veli, Cellino San Marco (Brindisi province), Puglia VINEYARD LOCATION: Brindisi province, Puglia VINEYARD LAND: FARMING PRACTICES: GRAPE VARIETIES: Primarily Negroamaro and Malvasia; small amount of Chardonnay WINE STYLES: Dry red, dry white WINE REGIONS: IGT Puglia TOTAL WINE PRODUCTION: 250,000 bottles (190,000 liters) YEAR FOUNDED: 2015 OWNER(S): The Falvo family WINEMAKER(S): Riccardo Cotarella Contrade is a product line of Masseria Li Veli started by the Falvo family in 2015, using high-quality Negroamaro, Malvasia, and Chardonnay grapes grown by a small group of local farmers. The wines are produced on-site, near their vineyards of origin, and then blended and bottled at Masseria Li Veli. The two wines in the Contrade line, a white and a red, provide quality wines of distinctive character and style with good market valuewines that can be served by themselves as a casual drink or with a wide range of foods. Contrade (pronounced kohn-TRA-day; singular contrada) is a southern Italian term for parcels of vineyard land that have been known by recognized names for a long time. Typically, these parcels were divided from one another by rows of trees, stone walls, creeks, or other identifiable features. The vineyards of Masseria Li Veli are mostly in Contrada Veli, which has been recognized by name since at least the 17th century. Other growers for this project are in nearby contrade. The Contrade label is styled after the rose window of the baroque Basilica di Santa Croce in the city of Lecce to the south.

  • Birkenhead-House-Wine-List
Welcome to the wine list of Birkenhead House. Having spent much of my working life involved with wine, I have tried to create a wine list that has a true representation from the wines in South Africa and balanced with wines of both New World and the Old World in style, providing wines to suit most tastes and palates. I am often asked what my favourite wine is and my answer would be that I really do not have one. There are so many great wines made in South Africa that it depends upon the occasion, what I am eating, the time of year but I think most importantly the company I’m in. I have selected a range of House wines from our surrounding areas to offer a variety of grape types to suit many dishes, which are all available by the glass or bottle. This wine list is a work in progress and hopefully will never be finished. Please also note that some of the vintages offered are rare and we might not carry large quantities. If you have the time look through the list there are some fantastic wines from both individual family producers to large winemaking companies. They all have their place on our list and I have tasted them all. If you would like to talk about a particular wine or need some help selecting, please feel free to ask. However I am a great believer in “Drink what you like, when you like.” Wine is all part of the occasion, the more you enjoy what we have to offer at Birkenhead House the better the wine will taste.

Now talking about wines, the Wine and sprit association of the Great Britain has sponsored the following definition of Wine ―Wine is an alcoholic beverage obtained from the fermentation of the juice of freshly gathered grapes. Fermentation is conducted in the district of origin according to local customs and traditions. To bear the name Wine, the product must come only from grapes. If made from other fruits; the fruit name must be put before the tern Wine eg. Blackberry Wine, Apricot Wine, Fig Wine. Only a small part of the world is Wine producing. This is because the grape will only provide juice of the quality required for conversion into consumable Wine where two climatic conditions prevail. 1. Sufficient sun-shine to ripen the grape 2. Winters that are moderate yet sufficiently cool to give the Wine a chance to rest and restore its strength for the growing and fruiting season.

  • August 2020 Tasting Notes
Tasting Notes August 2020 Pick-up Wines of Puglia, Italy Welcome to your August 2020 Smart Wine Club pickup. The theme this quarter is the region of Puglia (sometimes called Apulia), the easternmost region of Italy. When you're thinking of the boot-shaped country of Italy, Puglia is the heel of the boot. Puglia is an up-and-coming region for Italian wines. Wine grapes were first planted there over 1,000 years ago by the Greeks, and for centuries, it was known as a strong agricultural region producing inexpensive wine for local consumption. However, in the 1960s and 70s as the middle class grew worldwide and wine became an affordable luxury, Puglia gained a negative reputation for starting to produce mass quantities of very poor-quality bulk wine for blending. Then in the 1990s things started to turn around and the area benefited from government investments in tourism and improved winemaking. These days the region is known for its well-valued and easy-to-enjoy red wines. The most famous grape is Primitivo, which originally comes from Croatia and is either the exact same or a very close genetic relative of Zinfandel (wine geneticists are still working on this question). The 2nd grape of Puglia is Negroamaro, which produces either deep, bold reds or famously tasty rosatos. Other well-known local red grapes include Aglianico, Nero de Troia and Susumaniello. Fiano is the most common local white grape. Thank you so much for your continued support of the Smart Wine Club even during these incredibly strange times. Remember, if you introduce a friend who then decides to join, you’ll BOTH receive 10% off your next tote.
