Steep terraced banks at 1500-2000 feet above the sea level are home to three major grape varietals. The most prominent of which is the Nebbiolo, followed by Barbera and Dolcetto. Nebbiolo is a derivative of nebbia meaning "fog" in Latin. Each morning the fog shrouded hills acts as a blanket of protection to the grape vines. This fog helps extend the growing season, providing winemakers with exceptional mature fruit to produce world-class wines. 201 Barbera D'Asti, Michele Chiarlo 202 Barbera D'Asti, Castello del Poggio 203 Barbera D'Asti, Prunotto 213 Barbera D'Alba, Torriglione, Ratti 219 Barolo, Zonchera, Ceretto 216 Barolo, Pio Cesare 209 Dolcetto, Guiseppe Cortese 222 Dolcetto D'Alba, Colombe, Ratti 208 Barbaresco, Produttori 211 Barbaresco, Prunotto 212 Nebbiolo Gattinara, Travaglini 226 Nebbiolo D'Alba, Ochetti, Ratti 228 Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot & Syrah, Monsordo, Ceretto, Langhe SARDEGNA Sardinians have sharply reduced vineyards and volume of production recently while notably improving the general quality of their wines.Vineyards in the rugged eastern coastal range are noted for rich, red Cannonau, a relative of the Granacha brought from Spain. 501 Cannonau, Sela & Mosca 503 Perdera Rosso, Argiolas UMBRIA Umbria, the hilliest region in Italy, is an extremely green and pristine area, where nature and history blend together. Winemaking traditions reach back to the Etruscans and Romans. Yet to date, Umbria has remained in the shadow of Tuscany in both popularity and production. Today, this region is making exciting wines, both red and white, and people are starting to take more notice. 530 Montefalco Rosso Antonelli 531 Castello di Corbara, Lago di Rosso ABRUZZO A rough and rustic region, on the Adriatic Sea, Abruzzo is sprinkled with mountains, valleys and gorges all bathed in verdant foliage. Most likely introduced by the Etruscans, winegrowing in Abruzzo dates back to around the 6th century BC. Today this mountainous region with favorable growing conditions is undergoing a gradual transition from bulk-wine production to bottled, boutique wines, offering DOC and classified wines based on varietals Montepulciano and Trebbiano. 540 Montepulciano, Agriverde 549 Montepulciano D' Abruzzo, Zonin 542 Plateo, Agriverde SUPER TUSCANS In 1968 an experimental batch of wine was produced in Tuscany using non-traditional grape types more commonly used in Bordeaux and California. Namely, the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes. This unconventional use of grapes in Tuscany fell outside the governing bodies naming convention, and therefore could only be categorized as "Vino da Tavola" or table wine. Now three decades later, we refer to these wines as Super Tuscans. They are world-class in every sense and represent the finest within this "new" category. 412 Col di Sasso, Cabernet/ Sangiovese, Banfi 401 Morellino di Scansano, Rocca 417 Dogajolo 403 Sangiovese, Santa Christina 405 Sangiovese, Belnero, Banfi 407 Sangiovese & Cabernet, Antinori Toscana 404 Monte Antico, Toscano 409 Le Volte, Ornellaia 411 Lucente, Frescobaldi 410 Luce, Frescobaldi 414 Sito Maresco, Gaja 420 Crognolo, Tenuta Sette Ponti 416 Promis, Gaja 423 Cabreao Il Borgo Cabernet/Sauvignon 413 Le Serre Nuove, Ornellaia 421 Guidalberto, Tenuta San Guido 402 Tignanello, Antinori 406 Guado al Tasso, Antinori 422 Sassicaia 425 Cabernet Sauvignon/ Cabernet Franc, Ornellaia 430 Merlot, Masseto, Ornellaia VENETO The Veneto region has completed a major comeback in terms of high quality wine production. The vineyards of Masseria Li Veli are mostly in Contrada Veli, which has been recognized by name since at least the 17th century. Other growers for this project are in nearby contrade. The Contrade label is styled after the rose window of the baroque Basilica di Santa Croce in the city of Lecce to the south.

Piancornello Brunello di Montalcino Riserva COUNTRY ABV Italy 14.5% REGION VARIETALS Antoni Tuscany Sangiovese Galloni APPELLATION 97 PTS DOCG Brunello di 2012 Montalcino Wine WINERY Spectator The Pieri family bought the Piancornello estate in 1950 and initially grew fruit to sell locally, until 93 PTS 1991, when they began vinifying and selling their 2012 own estate wines. Piancornello is now owned and operated by Claudio Monaci and Silvia Batazzi. An 18th-century farmhouse anchors this organically-cultivated estate in the pristine nature of Montalcino, rubbing shoulders with centuries-old olive groves and Brunello vineyards. On their 10 hectares of vineyards, Piancornello cultivates predominantly Sangiovese vines with some Ciliegiolo. Their Sangiovese clones were chosen carefully to achieve low yields and looser bunches. Piancornello’s warmer and drier climate, as compared to the neighboring Chianti region, and proximity to the Mediterranean sea (45 km away) make this a prized site for winemaking. Piancornello’s vineyards grow on moderately sloped hills in rocky, volcanic soils with southern exposures, creating full-bodied, mineral wines. CULTIVATION A classic style Brunello di Montalcino from the southern slopes of this great appellation. In fact, Piancornello is located just outside of the town of TASTING NOTES Sant’Angelo in Colle, an area considered to be Made in only the best vintages for Brunello, this Riserva among the finest for the production of Brunello. is elegant and deeply sensational with roasted aromas, Spurred cordon. red fruit preserves, and spice. • August 2020 Tasting Notes
Tasting Notes August 2020 Pick-up Wines of Puglia, Italy Welcome to your August 2020 Smart Wine Club pickup. The theme this quarter is the region of Puglia (sometimes called Apulia), the easternmost region of Italy. When you're thinking of the boot-shaped country of Italy, Puglia is the heel of the boot. Puglia is an up-and-coming region for Italian wines. Wine grapes were first planted there over 1,000 years ago by the Greeks, and for centuries, it was known as a strong agricultural region producing inexpensive wine for local consumption. However, in the 1960s and 70s as the middle class grew worldwide and wine became an affordable luxury, Puglia gained a negative reputation for starting to produce mass quantities of very poor-quality bulk wine for blending. Then in the 1990s things started to turn around and the area benefited from government investments in tourism and improved winemaking. These days the region is known for its well-valued and easy-to-enjoy red wines. The most famous grape is Primitivo, which originally comes from Croatia and is either the exact same or a very close genetic relative of Zinfandel (wine geneticists are still working on this question). The 2nd grape of Puglia is Negroamaro, which produces either deep, bold reds or famously tasty rosatos. Other well-known local red grapes include Aglianico, Nero de Troia and Susumaniello. Fiano is the most common local white grape. Thank you so much for your continued support of the Smart Wine Club even during these incredibly strange times. Remember, if you introduce a friend who then decides to join, you’ll BOTH receive 10% off your next tote.

  • Brunello Di Montalcino Riserva DOCG
Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG The Fuligni viscounts came from an ancient Venetian family of leaders and generals who moved to Tuscany around 1770. The Montalcino estate was founded in 1923 and the present owner is the exquisite Maria Flora Fuligni, who works side by side with nephew Roberto Guerrini Fuligni, enologist Paolo Vagaggini and agronomist Federico Ricci, who is in charge of vineyard management. The property covers roughly 100 hectares (247 acres) east of Montalcino, the historic home to the most classic-style Brunellos. They have almost 25 acres (10 hectares) under vine, principally located at I Cottimelli (which lends its name to “Vigneti dei Cottimelli”), where the vineyards are located. The winery grows mostly Sangiovese for its excellent Montalcino wines, and just a bit of Merlot. Exposure for the vineyards is southeast and east facing, and the soils feature Tuscany’s typical galestro as well as clay and tuff. Each vineyard is vinified separately and the wines are classically inspired yet internationally appealing, featuring a strong backbone of acidity and smooth, polished tannins. Fuligni offers a complete range of Montalcino offerings, including Rosso, Brunello, and Super Tuscans, consistently rated among the top wines of the area. Fugligni’s Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a classic interpretation of the time-honored wine, made from pure Sangiovese grapes, grown exclusively from the estate’s oldest vineyards. The vines are close to thirty years old, with excellent exposure and stony tuffaceous soil dating back to the Eocene epoch. The grapes are harvested in early fall, and macerate for about eighteen days in stainless steel, where the wine continues to age for five more months.

Received: 30 May 2020; Accepted: 22 June 2020; Published: 30 June 2020 Abstract: The production of wines with peculiar analytical and sensorial profiles, together with the microbiological control of the winemaking process, has always been one of the main objectives of the wine industry. In this perspective, the use of oenological starters containing non-Saccharomyces yeasts can represent a valid tool for achieving these objectives. Here we present the results of seven pilot scale fermentations, each of which was inoculated with a different non-Saccharomyces yeast strain and after three days with a commercial Saccharomyces cerevisiae starter. The fermentations were carried out in double on 70 L of Sangiovese grape must, the most widely planted red grape variety in Italy and particularly in Tuscany, where it is utilized for the production of more than 80% of red wines. Fermentations were monitored by assessing both the development of the microbial population and the consumption of sugars at the different sampling times.
