Negroamaro DOC Negroamaro DOC Matané wines are from Salento, Puglia’s most southern province, located right up against the Ionian and Adriatic seas. In fact, the gorgeous vineyards are windswept by salty breezes coming off the sea. The area’s amazing palette of colors – with its blue-green waters and deep red soils – and dynamic sensations give Salentino wines an extra layered depth, unique to the region. The wine was named for its owners – Maria, Tara and Neil – who partnered with a team of experts to make a wine that fully represents this region. Pure Negroamaro, native to Puglia. Inky, rustic, fragrant and earthy. A lovely accompaniment to hearty dishes. No oak aging. The vineyards of Masseria Li Veli are mostly in Contrada Veli, which has been recognized by name since at least the 17th century. Other growers for this project are in nearby contrade. • August 2020 Tasting Notes
Tasting Notes August 2020 Pick-up Wines of Puglia, Italy Welcome to your August 2020 Smart Wine Club pickup. The theme this quarter is the region of Puglia (sometimes called Apulia), the easternmost region of Italy. When you're thinking of the boot-shaped country of Italy, Puglia is the heel of the boot. Puglia is an up-and-coming region for Italian wines. Wine grapes were first planted there over 1,000 years ago by the Greeks, and for centuries, it was known as a strong agricultural region producing inexpensive wine for local consumption. However, in the 1960s and 70s as the middle class grew worldwide and wine became an affordable luxury, Puglia gained a negative reputation for starting to produce mass quantities of very poor-quality bulk wine for blending. Then in the 1990s things started to turn around and the area benefited from government investments in tourism and improved winemaking. These days the region is known for its well-valued and easy-to-enjoy red wines. The most famous grape is Primitivo, which originally comes from Croatia and is either the exact same or a very close genetic relative of Zinfandel (wine geneticists are still working on this question). The 2nd grape of Puglia is Negroamaro, which produces either deep, bold reds or famously tasty rosatos. Other well-known local red grapes include Aglianico, Nero de Troia and Susumaniello. Fiano is the most common local white grape. Thank you so much for your continued support of the Smart Wine Club even during these incredibly strange times. Remember, if you introduce a friend who then decides to join, you’ll BOTH receive 10% off your next tote.

  • Masseria Borgo Dei Trulli LIALA Negroamaro Igp Salento IT
LIALA Negroamaro Salento INDICAZIONE GEOGRAFICA PROTETTA GRAPES: LIALA: Ladies name that 100% Negroamaro PPROTETTA means “ night” VINEYARD AREA: The grapes come from the oldest vineyards of our estate, located in the commune of Guagnano in the province of Lecce. Very low yields and carefully selected grapes are used to make this impressive Negroamaro. PLANT TRAINING AND DENSITY The training method is traditional ‘alberello pugliese’ (bush vines). The vines are approximately 80 years old, with an average yield of 700 -800g per plant. HARVEST : The grapes are harvested by hand into small 5kg crates of place from mid-September. The grapes are harvested when they are over-ripe and have begun a natural appassimento on the plant. The over-ripening allows greater concentration to be obtained, while preserving the fragrance of red fruits. VINIFICATION : After de-stemming, the grapes are not crushed, allowing them to remain intact, reducing damage to the skins and optimizing colour extraction. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 23-25°C for 8-10 days. Selected yeasts that are ideal for Negroamaro are used for fermentation. Frequent pumping over and rack and return are carried out during the fermentation to achieve gentle extraction of aromas and supple tannins. After racking, malolactic fermentation is induced. AGING: After malolactic fermentation 70% of the wine is racked and placed in 225 litre barrels and 3,000 litre oak casks for 7-8 months. Using different sized barrels gives the wine an excellent balance of fruit and oak. The remaining 30% is placed in stainless steel tanks.

The idea behind MGM is to supply quality wines suiting consumers expectations. Grape harvesting and processing is not just enough to make an excellent wine. It takes passion, curiosity, and enthusiasm. These are exactly the values shared by all the staff working every day at MGM Mondo del Vino who have turned us into one of the fifteen top Italian wine exporters. Today, the production of MGM is closely followed by oenologists and biologists, who control every stage of winemaking, aging, bottling and quality, in order to reach our main objective: making our customers happy. April 5th, 1991 is the date of birth of MGM. On that day, the founders Alfeo Martini, Roger Gabb and Christoph Mack, oenologists and wine-making experts, welcomed three winemakers coming from extensive experiences in different continents. This encounter of different wine cultures resulted in a new way of thinking, producing, and marketing Italian quality wine. Since 2005, the founding members have further innovated their approach to business and transferred substantial shares in the company to its management, in order to encourage a higher participation and the sharing of the project endorsed by MGM. Today, the production process at MGM is closely followed by oenologists and biologists: this team works with expertise and professionalism by controlling every stage of wine-making, aging, bottling, and quality control.

  • Negroamaro Puglia IGT
Negroamaro Puglia IGT A Mano is located in Puglia and is owned by American enologist Mark Shannon and Italian marketing specialist Elvezia Sbalchiero who fell instantly in love with the region and its old-world winemaking traditions while on vacation there. The name – Italian for “handmade” – is also their manifesto: the duo passionately cares for every single detail from the vineyard to the bottle. In fact, the vines are hand-cultivated and low-yielding, still head-trained as they were by the ancient Phoenicians. Mark has achieved a winning combination of California’s technology (jacketed rotary fermenters, heat exchangers, stainless steel equipment on a state-of-the-art scale etc.) and Puglia’s tradition and terroir. With Elvie’s strength, determination and logistic intelligence and the wines’ amazing value, you have the making of some of the best that Puglia has to offer. Made from 100% Negroamaro grown in Salice Salentino (in southern Puglia). The vines are 30-60 years old and enjoy sandy soils and trellised vine training to protect the grapes from sunburn. After harvest, the grapes are pressed and destemmed and cooled to 18 °C (64°F) so the must can ferment at its own pace. After racking in mid- November, the wine remains in concrete until bottling.
