CONTRADE Masseria Li Veli, Cellino San Marco
WINERY NAME: CONTRADE WINERY LOCATION: Masseria Li Veli, Cellino San Marco (Brindisi province), Puglia VINEYARD LOCATION: Brindisi province, Puglia VINEYARD LAND: FARMING PRACTICES: GRAPE VARIETIES: Primarily Negroamaro and Malvasia; small amount of Chardonnay WINE STYLES: Dry red, dry white WINE REGIONS: IGT Puglia TOTAL WINE PRODUCTION: 250,000 bottles (190,000 liters) YEAR FOUNDED: 2015 OWNER(S): The Falvo family WINEMAKER(S): Riccardo Cotarella Contrade is a product line of Masseria Li Veli started by the Falvo family in 2015, using high-quality Negroamaro, Malvasia, and Chardonnay grapes grown by a small group of local farmers. The wines are produced on-site, near their vineyards of origin, and then blended and bottled at Masseria Li Veli. The two wines in the Contrade line, a white and a red, provide quality wines of distinctive character and style with good market valuewines that can be served by themselves as a casual drink or with a wide range of foods. Contrade (pronounced kohn-TRA-day; singular contrada) is a southern Italian term for parcels of vineyard land that have been known by recognized names for a long time. Typically, these parcels were divided from one another by rows of trees, stone walls, creeks, or other identifiable features. The vineyards of Masseria Li Veli are mostly in Contrada Veli, which has been recognized by name since at least the 17th century. Other growers for this project are in nearby contrade. The Contrade label is styled after the rose window of the baroque Basilica di Santa Croce in the city of Lecce to the south. -

We now have 2.5 acres of Montepulciano planted to four different blocks on our winery ranch. This wine comes from our first vineyard block near the creek, and a block we planted in 2007. The vines are planted to 4’ X 6’ spacing on 101-14 and 420-A rootstock. We believe our climate in Dry Creek is similar to the cooler hillside sites in Abruzzo resulting in a Montepulciano with brighter fruit and acidity. VINTAGE/HARVEST: 2015 was another excellent vintage for Montepulciano. The 2015 growing season featured drought-like growing conditions in the spring and summer. The warm and dry conditions allowed us to harvest our Montepulciano grapes early (September 29 - October 10th) with ideal sugar/acid numbers. Montepulciano is a vigorous vine, thus we routinely drop about 40-50% of the crop for uniform ripening, depth, and complexity. WINEMAKING: We fermented this Montepulciano in small open top tanks. It was de-stemmed, lightly crushed, and kept below 60 degrees for several days prior to spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeast. -
Bibi Graetz Wines, the Name Is Very Evocative, “Casa-Matta”: the “Crazy-House”, Is Our Bright and Approachable Version of White Tuscan Blend
BI BI GRAETZ CASAMATTA Bianco 2016 The “Crazy-House” Like most of Bibi Graetz wines, the name is very evocative, “Casa-Matta”: the “Crazy-House”, is our bright and approachable version of white Tuscan blend. The Vermentino brings freshness, the Moscato Bianco elevate the aromatics and Trebbiano increase the balance and the harmony of the blend. Winemaker’s Tasting Notes Vermentino 60%, Trebbiano 30%, Moscato Bianco 10% “When I drink Casamatta Bianco I’m immediately projected on the Tuscan coast. This is a wine that reflects the soil, the sun and the perfumes of Maremma. The first impression is the floral notes of Moscato, orange and peach flowers, then in the palate you have the citrus of the Vermentino, pear and exotic fruits” Bibi Graetz Vintage 2016: the growing season After a great 2015, the expectation of having another sensational vintage were very low, usually it’s hard to have 2 great vintages one after the other. What we realized with the 2016 is that this is not the case. This vintage is at the same level of 2015 and someone says it’s even better! Very cold winter, with some touches of snow guaranteed, with a mild and sunny spring, perfect conditions for the develop of the plants. The summer was a bit warmer then 2015 with only few days of rain in the beginning of August and the harvest period was fully insolated and anticipated to the 12th of September. Vinification and Ageing Casamatta Bianco is produced from the vineyards of Capalbio, south of Tuscany in Maremma. The grapes are hand-picked and fermented in stainless steel tanks, destammed and softpressed with dry ice. -

Conviviale Fiano
Conviviale Fiano Producer: Boutinot Italy Adria Vini Winemaker: Claudio Manera Country of Origin: Italy Region of Origin: Puglia Grapes: Fiano 100% ABV: 12% Case Size: 6x75cl Vintage: 2013 Suitable For: Vegetarians Closure Type: Screw Cap The One-Liner An interesting and characterful spicy dry white from Southern Italy. Producer Details Set up in 2003, Adria Vini is a winemaking venture jointly owned by Boutinot and Araldica Vini Piemontesi, the leading co-operative in Piemonte. All areas of production, from grape selection through to vinification, maturation, blending and bottling are meticulously overseen by Araldica's Claudio Manera and Lella Burdese. Working closely with growers and cooperatives, our aim is to produce a range of authentic, well-priced wines from local grape varieties. The mainstay of white wine production is Pinot Grigio, sourced from the Pavia region south of Milan, Friuli and the Veneto, with the addition of Prosecco, and Grillo and Catarratto wines from Sicily. The reds come from mature, low yielding vineyards in Sicily, Puglia and Abruzzo, the source of some of Europe's most undervalued and characterful wines. Our most recent project has brought Cannonau and Vermentino from Sardinia to the portfolio. In The Vineyard Food Recommendations The grapes are sourced from 10-15 year old vines Pair with fish, shellfish or pasta dishes with lightly in the Murgia zone of central Puglia. -

Castello di Casole, a boutique hotel that had only been open for three weeks, is the centrepiece of a sprawling 4,200-acre estate with a number of restored properties. It also boasts an award-winning game reserve, which was of particular interest as, with the Mugello F1 racetrack and Montalcino's vineyards nearby, it helped make C di C a perfect base for the boar-hunting, Ferrari-driving, Brunello-guzzling fantasy tour I was researching for a client. On arrival, I was immediately given a large glass of prosecco and the Wi-Fi code (always great to see a hotel in tune with a writer’s priorities). The US adapters in our room, the practice of having one’s car “brought around”, and the fact that top New York outfit Italian Wine Merchants are the cellar partners for villa owners wishing to put together a wine collection in their new property, were all indicators of the estate’s target demographic. -
50% Vermentino, 40% Viognier, 10% Ansonica the 2015 Vintage Was
VIVIA Cateogory Maremma Toscana DOC (controlled appellation) Vintage 2015 Blend 50% Vermentino, 40% Viognier, 10% Ansonica Climate The 2015 vintage was characterized by a winter with abundant precipitation which assisted in creating important reserves of rainwater in the ground; a mild spring was followed by a warm and dry summer with temperatures above seasonal averages. Rains and a lowering of temperatures during the second half of August re-created optimal conditions for the vines. There were no problems of healthy development, and the vineyard continued to ripen the grapes in an excellent fashion, accumulating the typical aromatic substances of the different grapes varieties. Fermentation and Aging The varieties were fermented separately, and a small percentage of Viognier and Ansonica were harvested late in order to give the wine notes of warmth and ripeness. The grapes, at the moment of their arrival in the cellars, were given a soft pressing and the must chilled to a constant temperature of 50° Fahrenheit (10° centigrade) for 24 hours in order to favor a natural static settling of the impurities. The clean must went into stainless steel fermenting tanks, where it fermented at a temperature of 61° Fahrenheit (16° centigrade). A brief three month aging period in stainless steel tanks on the fine lees preceded bottling. Alcohol: 12.5% Historical data The Le Mortelle estate was once part of a larger property which already appeared on the maps of Tuscan Grand Duke Leopold II in the mid-19th century. The estate is located in the province of Grosseto, in the heart of the lower Maremma, approximately 5.5 miles from the town of Castiglione della Pescaia. -
