Anche la Desarpa ha come protagoniste le mucche della razza valdostana. Si celebra ogni anno alla fine di settembre e segna la fine dell’estate e della stagione in alpeggio. Le mucche scendono a valle attraversando villaggi e paesi di montagna sino alle stalle del fondo valle. Una vera e propria festa salutata ogni anno da residenti e turisti. Les Batailles de Reines e la Desarpa. Quassù la montagna durante tutta l’estate ha il sapore della natura e la riscoperta delle antiche tradizioni valligiane. Tra le feste popolari della Valle d’Aosta che richiamano una grande partecipazione di pubblico, non solo regionale, è la “Bataille de Reines”, in cui le “Reines” (Regine) sono le mucche . Si tratta di vere e proprie “sfide” incruente ed istintive, organizzate dagli allevatori con intenti per così dire “agonistici”. A Breuil-Cervinia l’eliminatoria si svolge ai primi di agosto in una zona particolarmente suggestiva che per l’occasione è stata denominata ”Le royaume des reines du Cervin”. Il Cervino e l'acqua. La neve che d'inverno "colora" di bianco il Cervino e le Grandes Murailles in primavera e in estate diventa preziosa acqua. Il bianco lascia spazio al verde dei pascoli e l'uomo vive con rispetto la natura. Alcuni uomini però la vivono più intensamente: sono le famose Guide Alpine che celebrano la loro festa insieme ai Maestri di Sci il giorno di ferragosto. Una giornata tutta speciale dove vengono fatti rivivere riti, storia e costumi del passato legati al mondo della montagna. L'estate sugli sci a Breuil-Cervinia il sole, l'azzurro del cielo il bianco della neve colorano l'estate. Sui versanti italiano e svizzero, del Ghiacciaio del Plateau Rosà lo sci non conosce stagioni. La magia della neve accoglie i suoi fans da fine giugno sino ad inizio di settembre. A Breuil-Cervinia Valtournenche Il sole, l'azzuro del cielo e il bianco della neve vi invitano a vivere l'estate da protagonisti con gli sci ai piedi. Dove la neve sposa l’estate. Il comprensorio a 3480 metri di quota è da sempre la patria dello sci estivo: 23 i km di piste percorribili. La neve mantiene le sue caratteristiche invernali anche quando il sole di agosto abbronza i patiti della tintarella in quota. Un’occasione sfruttata ogni anno da migliaia e migliaia di appassionati di sci, snowboard e freestyle. Chi vuole surfare trova invece ospitalità all’half-pipe del Gravity Park di Plateau Rosà. “18 buche ai piedi del Cervino; giocare a golf vicino al cielo“. Il Golf Club del Cervino, tra i più alti d’Europa, si snoda a fianco del torrente Marmore ed è a poche centinaia di metri dal centro di Breuil-Cervinia. Il percorso, a 18 buche, è un Par 69 di 5303 metri. Il campo è caratterizzato da buche pianeggianti e declivi pronunciati, genziane, anemoni e assidue spettatrici, le marmotte. La club house, rispecchia lo stile montanaro, tutto legno e pietra, ospita la segreteria, il deposito sacche ed il bar ristorante dove si possono gustare le migliori specialità della cucina valdostana. Sport estremi, relax, nuoto e tennis. Una discesa da brivido, o meglio una valanga di emozioni in sella alle due ruote. E’ la Maxiavalanche, una gara unica nel suo genere con concorrenti provenienti da tutta Europa. Si parte dai 3500 metri del ghiacciaio del Plateau Rosà in mountain bike per arrivare ai 2050 di Breuil-Cervinia. Ben 10 km di tracciato su neve, morena e single track in terra. Per i meno avventurosi ma che non rinunciano ad una partita di tennis o ad una corroborante nuotata Valtournenche offre il suo Centro Sportivo Polivalente. ABSTRACT The Antrona ophiolite is located in the Italian side of Western Central Alps. In the Alpine nappe stack, it lies at low structural levels, being sandwiched between the overlying continental Monte Rosa Nappe (upper Penninic) and the underlying Camughera-Moncucco continental Unit (middle Penninic). The ophiolite sequence includes serpentinized ultramafites, metagabbros and mafic rocks covered by calcschists. The ultramafic portion of the Antrona ophiolite consists of serpentinized peridotites, with interbedded layers of various mafic/ultramafic rocks, and underlies the mafic rocks and metasediments. In spite of the Alpine tectonic and metamorphic evolution of the Antrona ophiolite and its heavy serpentinization, the ultramafic rocks preserve relict texture and miner- alogy that allow discussing the nature of their protoliths. Olivine-clinopyroxene-spinel-bearing serpentinites still retain relict porphyroclastic texture, com- monly attributed to mantle peridotites. This inference is supported by quantitative textural analysis of Lattice Preferred Orientation by neutron diffraction, per- formed for the first time in olivine crystals of Alpine ophiolites, suggesting T conditions > 800°C for the activation of slip systems.

    THE MATTERHORN CENTENARY 7 THE MATTERHORN CENTENARY (Nine illustrations: nos. I- 9) VEN though the Matterhorn fell with unexpected ease to the first party which seriously pressed an attempt from the Swiss side, the eauty and isolation of the peak and its apparent inaccessibility- the latter confirmed by the lengthening history of frustrated attempts by the Italian ridge made it the most sought after prize in the Alps at the time of the first ascent. It still remains so, in the obvious sense to which the congestion of the Hornli ridge on any fine day in July or August bears witness. It has become a tourist's mountain, as well as a mountaineer's. But the mountaineer, however much he may deplore the fixed ropes and the crowds which swarm up and down them, will still wish to have climbed the Matterhorn. Neither the highest nor the hardest of the great peaks of the Alps, it continues to exercise much the same special fascina­ tion for climbers as it exercised a hundred years ago. July 14 of this year marks the hundredth anniversary of the day when Michel Croz' blouse, fixed to a tent-pole on the summit of the Matter­ horn, was seen 'at Zermatt at the Riffel in the Val Tournanche '; when the watchers in Breuil cried, 'Victory is ours!'; and when, an hour or two later, a sharp-eyed lad in Zermatt ran into the Monte Rosa hotel, saying that he had seen an avalanche fall from the summit of the Matter­ horn onto the Matterhorn glacier, and was reproved for telling idle stories.

    • • • 200 ALPINE NOTES and was commissioned as a specialist officer in one of the ~cientific branches, in which he rose to the rank of Squadron-Leader. His line of research was to investigate \Vind spe-ed and visibility as they affect parachute landings. I~ was while serving in this capacity that, in order that he might himself apply the test of practice to his theories, he yolun­ teered for a bombing raid, from which he was reported missing, presumed killed, in the spring of 1943. Most of Crichton-Miller's climbing was done with his- family and family friends; however, as an undergraduate he was an active member of the Oxford University Mountaineering Club, and was for a time on the committee. As a climber he was strong and safe, well -grounded in Alpine ·tradition. His big frame seemed to belong to the epoch of frontal attack and hours of tireless step-cutting. _Probably his best climb was a guideless ascent of the Zmutt ridge in 1938 .     CA RUSSELL One Hundred Years Ago (with extracts from the Alpine Journal) (Plates 60-64) he night, thanks to the moon, was almost as bright as day, but even, Tlow down as we were then on the moraine, where hardly a breath of air was stirring, it was bitterly cold. The snow was, as usual this winter, absolutely perfect and we forced our way rapidly up the two ice walls, emerging on the small snowfield below the "Schneekuppe" orlower peak of our mountain. The wind caught us fairly here, and the cold became almost unbearable. Ina few minutes we were all literal impersonifications of Winter. At 6.50 we reached the Schneekuppe just as day broke. The Sattel was crossed and now only the last peak, abrupt and splendid, just gilded rosy­ red by the rising sun, rose before us. At 7.20 we stood on the actual summit, staying only a moment to scrawl ournames with shaking fingers on one of the many cards decorating the little cairn, and then fled, never halting till we reached the Sella Pass and warm sunshine. The second winter ascent ofPiz Roseg, on 26 February, was one ofa number of fine expeditions in the Bemina Alps undertaken by EL Strutt1 with the guides Martin Schocher and Sebastian Platz during the early months of 1899. On 18 February, accompanied by William Williams, the party com­ pleted a traverse of the four Bellavista peaks under winter conditions before reaching the summit of Piz Zupo and on 4 March traversed Piz PaIn after joining forces with Leonard Rawlence.
