Halleluyah! ~ ii ~ DEDICATION This study is dedicated my late father, Elder Joseph Okunola Osunkunle for being an exemplary father and for his love and guidance for us as a family. ~ iii ~ ABSTRACT This research project was aimed at assessing whether community radio stations are indeed the voice of the community or are set out to fulfil their own agenda. This study therefore looked at three different categories of community radio stations, namely the faith-based radio (Kingfisher FM), geographic community radio (Radio Grahamstown) and institutional community radio (Forte FM) with the aim of studying their activities and comparing the three. Relevant literature has been reviewed and data have been collected using both quantitative and qualitative methods through questionnaires, personal interviews and focus group interviews. The study however leans more on the qualitative approach and a quantitative approach has merely been used to identify the trends of the views of the participants. The analysis of data highlights the views of the respondents about these radio stations as the voice of the community. The views of the respondents from the three radio stations showed that these stations enjoy a very good patronage from the listeners in Port Elizabeth (Kingfisher FM), Grahamstown (Radio Grahamstown) and Alice (Forte FM), respectively. The results and discussions confirm that these radio stations meet their various individual needs of the listeners and that of the community at large. In addition, the fact that participants of the focus groups and survey respondents for these three selected radio stations reported that the Station regularly fulfils the major functions of a radio station, which is to inform, educate and entertain them, showed that these radio stations are acting socially responsible as well.     Work in progress, not for citation purposes Dynamics of competition in two-sided markets with differentiated products: A case study of the radio industry following the Primedia/New Africa Investment Ltd merger Rantao Itumeleng1 Abstract The decision by the Competition Tribunal to unconditionally approve the Primedia/New Africa Investment Limited merger case (NAIL) is the subject of this paper. This study conducts an impact assessment of the Primedia/NAIL case. It does so using market definition as the first step in the assessment of competition in the Gauteng commercial radio industry. In markets with two different groups of customers, repositioning is fundamental in the assessment of anticompetitive effects post-merger. Utilizing tools identified in literature and international cases, the study adopts an ex post approach to assess competition in the Gauteng commercial radio industry. Findings indicate that in mergers that do not lead to join control, merging firms’ stations reposition away. Highveld and Kaya repositioned away from each other post-merger. Because of this dynamic nature of radio as well as the structure of the market in Gauteng, no effective competitors to Kaya and Highveld in the relevant market, Highveld and Kaya’s prices rose faster than other radio stations’ prices post-merger. At an industry level, competition also deteriorated post-merger as prices rose significantly mainly because of few sales house. These findings imply that the initial decision by the Competition Tribunal to approve the merger unconditionally may be incorrect. The influence of radio advertising on a consumer’s purchase decision is tough to determine, the research that is available on radio advertising, in general, is far less in comparison to other advertising research studies in the marketing of brands, products and services. This study aims to determine the impact of radio advertising on a consumer purchase decision. The majority of research studies rely on the effect of television and print advertising, and recently internet advertising has shown a higher engagement level for consumers to influence purchase decisions. The disruptive nature of internet advertising has had an influence on the revenue generation for traditional platforms such as radio, print and television. Radio advertising is a platform used mostly by local businesses on a local radio station in the business’s vicinity. Research in the marketing of brands, products and services have included radio advertising, including the singularity of a message of a radio advertisement message recall-analysis. Traditional media are used for branding, and to action a sales promotion to drive revenue generation and profitability. Advertising does have a material influence on consumers’ purchase decisions. The question in this study determines the influence radio would have on that decision.

I have always had a passion for football, moving out of home at 13 to board here at King Edward VII School in Johannesburg, the school gave me the drive to love and be passionate about sport as it was my turn to when I missed home. Only after school did I become more sports specific and moving into the line of football alone. Football has been in my blood since I was born, knowing I would make a career out of it until I started helping out at schools and coaching the sport after school. My playing career was very short after school at Corithians Black Aces and due to an injury I decided I would peruse a career in football either managing or coaching. We all have to start somewhere so I decided coaching it would be. My Life after this will never be the same as I have only grown with in the sport, starting various youth programs at 5 great schools around Johannesburg and the program is only getting bigger as more schools want to start implementing the program.
