The team, which was made up of personnel across all branches and experience soon made an impact against the home team, highlighting the RN teamwork ethos. While part of SNMG2 a golf competition against the Americans was arranged at Mijas Golf Club outside Malaga with financial help from the Sports Lottery.

At the half-way point the score was 2-2 with all to play for. HMS MANCHESTER

Whilst deployed as part of the South Atlantic Task Group HMS Manchester took time out of a busy programme to arrange a rugby match between the over 35’s and under 35’s when they came alongside in the Falklands. Raising money for the ship’s affiliated charities the teams played in front of 150 of the ships company in a closely fought battle. HMS ENDURANCE

The sailors onboard HMS Endurance managed to raise over £1,300 for an orphanage in Western Ghana. Whilst the ship was alongside they spent two-days working ashore digging foundations for the new kitchen which they had helped to fund. They also donated football strips from both the FA and Portsmouth FC to the orphans. The time ashore ended with sailors from the ship suffering defeat in a football match at the hands of the team from the orphanage .

Fit 2 Fight 2009| 27 Team Success Ladies Boxing

The Royal Navy Ladies Boxing Team got off to a flying start in their 2009 campaign for the National Amateur Boxing Association Female Championships. An impressive seven Navy women represented the Senior Service at this competition.

Three of the team had to compete against the Army to secure their places in their own combined services championships, AB Bowens (HMS Neptune), AB Emily Locke (HMS Bulwark) and Lt Cdr Vicky Sollitt (DLO Andover) all secured victory to claim their semi-final positions.

This left four RN competitors in the finals. PO(ET) Teeling (HMS Collingwood) and PO(ET) Palin (HMS Cornwall) put in impressive fights, both winning well-deserved Silver medals.

The last of the Navy’s competitors, Lt O’Connor (nee Abel) (HMS Temeraire), had an impressive fight in her fifth ABC Championship final against strong opposition resulting in her fourth consecutive ABA Championship, securing her position in the International Squad and her ranking as the British number one female featherweight. . All in all the RN Ladies Boxing Team returned from the ABA Championships with 1 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals, making them the most successful female boxing team in the country. RN coach POPT Stuart O’Connor said “They performed brilliantly and I’m delighted with the results. We are seen by the boxing community as the leading lights in female boxing development and we have shown today that we are technically capable, fit and dedicated to producing quality boxers; I’m thrilled.”
