Through her father's position, the family was part of the cosmopolitan world of intellectualism and salons that flourished in Berlin at this time, and the family moved within a circle of noted artists and scholars in the humanities and social sciences.

    ZAPISKI HISTORYCZNE — TOM LXXXIV — ROK 2019 Zeszyt 2 Sources, Materials, Miscellanea http://dx.doi.org/10.15762/ZH.2019.50 KAROL KŁODZIŃSKI (University of Gdańsk) Margarete Bieber (1879 –1978): Eminent Classical Scholar from Western Prussia Key words: Przechowo, women’s emancipation, ancient culture, classical archaeology, women of science In the context of questions about the participation of women in making science in the 20th century, the leading position is obviously occupied by Ma- ria Skłodowska-Curie, who was not only the first two-time Nobel Prize win- ner (in 1903 and 1911), but also the first female professor at Paris-Sorbonne University1. However, in-depth studies prove that the famous Polish chemist was not the only scientist in the past century who significantly contributed to science. The scientific background and achievements of Margarete Bieber, a German researcher of Jewish origin (an American citizen from 1940) are also impressive. Born on 31 July 1879 in Schönau (Przechowo, a present-day district of Świecie, Poland)2 in former West Prussia, she was a world-famous expert in art and archaeology of ancient Greece and Rome, specializing in the history of ancient theatre. The career of this researcher is above all a fascinating story of a daughter of rich Jewish industrialists from Pomerelia, who, in order to devote herself to scholarship, had to struggle for a long time with prejudices concerning not only her gender, but also her ethnicity, which was particularly stigmatized during the Nazi Germany period. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, higher education, let alone being part of academic world, was unattainable for the vast majority of women3.

Auch das Hauptgebäude der heutigen Humboldt-Universität kommt in den Blick. An genau der Stelle des Westflügels, wo sich der Raum befindet, in dem wir gerade sitzen, klafft ein Loch, weiteren Räumen des Winckelmann-Instituts fehlen die Außenwände.

Imponują- ce są także osiągnięcia oraz dorobek naukowy niemieckiej (od 1940 r. mającej obywatelstwo amerykańskie) badaczki pochodzenia żydowskiego – Margarete Bieber. Ta urodzona 31 VII 1879 r. w Przechowie (Schönau, obecnie dzielnica Świecia)2 na obszarze dawnych Prus Zachodnich uczona była światowej sławy znawczynią sztuki i archeologii starożytnej Grecji i Rzymu, wyspecjalizowaną w historii teatru antycznego. Kariera tej badaczki to przede wszystkim fascy- nująca historia zmagań zainteresowanej kulturą starożytną córki bogatych po- morskich przemysłowców o żydowskich korzeniach, która pragnąc poświęcić się nauce, przez długi czas musiała walczyć z uprzedzeniami dotyczącymi nie tylko jej płci, lecz także przynależności etnicznej, szczególnie napiętnowanej w okresie hitlerowskich Niemiec. Pod koniec XIX i na początku XX w. zdobycie wyższego wykształcenia, a tym bardziej zaistnienie w światowej nauce, dla zdecydowanej większości kobiet było nieosiągalne3. Swój naukowy sukces M.     MARGARETE BIEBER (1879-1978) By Larissa Bonfante and Matthias Recke Margarete Bieber: Two Worlds Larissa Bonfante and Matthias Recke Introduction Soon after Margarete Bieber's death in 1979 Larissa Bonfante wrote a short biography of her former teacher, long-time friend and neighbor in New York, which appeared in Claire Richter Sherman's Women as Interpreters of the Visual Arts (1981). Much of it was based on the unpublished manuscript of Dr. Bieber's Autobiography of a Female Scholar, which she gave to the author. This autobiography recounted the story of her life and her work, first in Germany and, after the coming of the Nazi era, in America. Twenty-five years later, these two worlds of the archaeologist, in Germany and America, Giessen and New York, are brought together by the two authors of this chapter. Matthias Recke became interested in Dr. Bieber's life when he was working on the history of the Archaeological Institute of the University of Giessen in which she played such an important part. His research in the archives of the Institute and the University led to the discovery of important letters, documents and material which illuminate the historical situation and often put the author's actions and interpretation of the facts in a new light. The two authors therefore determined to collaborate on a new account of the life of Margarete Bieber and of her remarkable career, which spanned two continents and almost a hundred years of a dramatic period of history. Much has changed in the quarter century since Margarete Bieber’s death in terms of both information and attitudes.
