DAP members and supporters go bald to protest money politics Malaysian Insider May 3,2013 By Opalyn Mok GEORGE TOWN, May 3 — A total of 84 DAP members and supporters shaved their heads bald at the Kek Lok Si Temple here in protest against money politics. They include six people who are standing for election in state constituencies in Penang. Their move was to express disgust with Barisan Nasional (BN)-friendly non-governmental organisation 1 Malaysia Penang Welfare Club for organising free dinners and allegedly distributing money and holding lucky draws to woo voters. Among those who went bald was Betty Chew, wife of Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who also did it to support her husband in the general election. “This is not organised by the party but an individual effort by all of us to protest against the money politics BN is using to win voter support,” she said. The DAP candidates who went bald were Pulau Tikus candidate Yap Soo Huey, incumbent Air Itam assemblyman Wong Hon Wai, incumbent Tanjung Bungah assemblyman Teh Yee Cheu, incumbent Berapit assemblyman Ong Kok Fooi, incumbent Datuk Keramat assemblyman Jagdeep Singh and incumbent Sungai Puyu assemblyman Phee Boon Poh. Lim, who was present to witness the ceremony, condemned the blatant act by certain quarters in trying to win votes. “They are doing this openly in my constituency and I hope the voters will not be bought over by their tactics,” he said. In recent weeks, 1 Malaysia dinners have been held in almost all constituencies in the state but more so in the Air Putih state constituency where Lim is standing for election.

1M'sia-Penang Welfare denies being funded by BN MalaysiaKini.com April 10, 2013 By Susan Loone Fending off increasing suspicion of being the funder behind BN's alleged money politics, the 1Malaysia-Penang Welfare club has publicly denied that its financial resources were in any way related to the government or political parties. The club's president, Geh Choh Hun, said that the organisation does not receive any funding from the federal or state governments or any political parties. "We are supported by a range of generous contributors who share our vision. Our integrity ensures that our supporters are protected by strict confidentiality provisions," said Geh, in a press conference in Penang today. Accompanying him was young billionaire Low Taek Jho (right) - who is popularly known as Jho Low - which some quarters believe is the personality providing the funds for the BN's election campaign, although the latter has denied it. The club had organised a huge dinner on Monday attended by 5,000 people at the Han Chiang College field, handing out donations amounting to RM2 million to three media associations and other NGOs. The three journalists' organisations - including a martial arts association - each received RM50,000, while other NGOs had been given RM5,000 each. The 1Malaysia NGO had come under the spotlight when several free dinners were held in the Pulau Tikus constituency starting about three weeks ago. DAP has been claiming that these free dinners - where donations and gifts were distributed - are an attempt to draw votes for BN candidates in the coming general election.

  • ADUN PKR Disekat Sebab Tak Buat Kerja, Kata Lim Malaysiakini.Com
